KIA K5 MIDSIZE SEDAN AND SORENTO SUV NAMED AMONG THE “BEST NEW CARS FOR 2021” BY AUTOTRADER

The Popular 2021 Kia K5 Midsize Sedan and Sorento SUV Singled Out for Winning Combination of Value, Available Technology and Dynamic Driving Experience

  •  All-new K5 lauded for roomy, high-tech interior, sharp handling and fresh new look
  • Redesigned Sorento chosen for luxury options and fun-to-drive capability

IRVINE, Calif., February 12, 2021 – Two of Kia’s newest and most popular models, the K5 midsize sedan and the Sorento SUV, have been named among the “Best New Cars for 2021” by Autotrader, marking the latest industry awards for Kia’s world-class model lineup.

“Having two all-new models, the K5 midsize sedan and the Sorento SUV, included among Autotrader’s ‘Best New Cars for 2021’ is a testament to Kia’s commitment to design, quality, and the ownership experience,” said Sean Yoon, president, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America. “This latest recognition of the Kia brand shows that our dedicated philosophy of building sporty sedans and capable SUVs is resonating with customers and the experts at Autotrader.”

Autotrader praised the K5 for its head-turning exterior and a roomy, high-tech interior. In addition, the K5’s high-end options, sharp handling, and fresh new look are cited as reasons the sporty midsize sedan was so appealing. Autotrader also noted its eye-catching design, especially in GT trim, rivaled that of some German sport sedan makers.

The 2021 Sorento was noted for its ability to transform from budget-friendly SUV to a near-luxury SUV with only a few options and it was praised for its handling characteristics, particularly in the rugged X-Line trim. Comparing the all-new Sorento to the award-winning Telluride, Autotrader noted Kia has captured the spirit of its wildly popular midsize SUV in a smaller and nimbler package.

The Autotrader Best New Cars Award is intended to benefit a broad set of shoppers by highlighting a diverse group of 12 vehicles. Each vehicle on this year’s list was agreed upon unanimously by the entire editorial and data team at Autotrader. To be considered, a vehicle must be of the current or next model-year and available for purchase at the time of the announcement. The editors capped the base price for consideration at $75,000, meaning every contender offers a significant value for the asking price. Not only is value a top priority, but vehicles are also judged on available technology and a rewarding or dynamic driving experience. Each winning vehicle must earn a score of 4.0 or higher on the editors’ 5-point evaluation scorecard to be named a 2021 Autotrader Best New Car.

ALL-NEW KIA K5 RECEIVES 2021 MOTORWEEK DRIVERS’ CHOICE AWARD

  • Sleek and stylish K5 wins Best Family Sedan category
  • Bold mid-size sedan disrupts the segment with next-gen design and turbocharged performance

IRVINE, Calif., February 11, 2021 – The Kia K5 has earned a 2021 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Award, taking the win in the Best Family Sedan category. MotorWeek, television's longest running automotive magazine show, annually judges the best new cars and trucks of the year. Editors evaluate vehicles based on a variety of factors, taking into account trends and innovations, value, and reliability, among others.

“We built the all-new 2021 K5 with the goal of it being the best in its class, which is why we introduced it with segment exclusives like the available wet dual-clutch transmission,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia Motors America, Kia Motors North America. “It’s incredibly satisfying to know that the respected auto experts at MotorWeek enjoy the K5 – it tells us we’re on the right track and motivates us to continue to exceed expectations.”

All new for the 2021 model year, the K5 is the brand’s most powerful mid-size sedan ever with standard turbocharged engines across the board, available all-wheel drive, and a technology-packed premium interior that’s not far off from what you’d find inside a much higher priced luxury vehicle.

MotorWeek selected the K5 as our Best Family Sedan for 2021 because Kia took the heritage of their already excellent midsize family sedan, the Optima, which has long been one of our staff favorites for daily driving, and elevated it to a new level of total performance for its class,” said John Davis, MotorWeek creator and host. “To us, the K5 is not just a redesign of a middleweight car, but a rethink of the affordable sedan segment as it now includes a full slate of the latest personal and safety technology, modern powertrains that are both energetic and efficient, as well as an all-wheel drive option, all wrapped in great exterior and interior styling that transcends its price class.”

Niro EV’s latest accolade reinforces the strength of Kia’s electric vehicle lineup as brand prepares for Plan S strategy focused on the future of the automotive industry

  • 2019 and 2020 Niro EV earn top spot in the Mass-Market Category
  • Efficient crossover ranked highest in overall EV owner satisfaction

IRVINE, Calif., February 10, 2021 – The Kia Niro EV has been ranked number one among mass-market brands in the J.D. Power 2021 Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study. For this inaugural study, J.D. Power surveyed nearly 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) owners on factors including cost-of-ownership, battery range, and driving enjoyment to determine the likelihood of repurchasing and recommending an EV.

"At Kia, we are committed to delivering a world-class ownership experience, and as the brand prepares to introduce several new electric vehicles by 2025 under our Plan S strategy, we are proud that our current lineup is already successful among existing and potential EV drivers,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia Motors America, Kia Motors North America. “We are honored to win the mass-market category in the EVX Ownership Study, which reinforces our leadership goal in the future mobility industry.”

With a strong existing lineup of electric vehicles and an eye toward future transportation, Kia is moving forward with the implementation of ‘Plan S’ and will invest $25 billion by 2025 on the future of electrification, mobility services, connectivity and autonomy.

The Kia Niro EV opens a world of possibilities for drivers who are drawn toward popular crossovers but also want the benefits electric vehicles offer. With 291 lb.-ft. of torque and four drive modes, the Niro EV’s robust electric powertrain gets drivers where they need to go – quickly – while enjoying advanced technology and connectivity in a stylish package that fits every lifestyle.

“I’m very pleased to present an award to Kia for highest EV ownership satisfaction in the mass market segment,” said Brent Gruber, Senior Director, Global Automotive at J.D. Power. “As the growth of vehicle electrification continues to shape the future of the of the automotive industry, the Kia Niro EV represents a standout model that checks all the right boxes for owners.”

The U.S. EVX Ownership Study, driven by a collaboration with PlugShare, sets the standard for benchmarking satisfaction with the critical attributes that affect the EV ownership experience. The overall EVX ownership index score measures electric vehicle owners’ satisfaction (on a 1,000-point scale) in premium and mass-market segments across seven factors: accuracy of stated battery range; availability of public charging stations; battery range; cost of ownership; driving enjoyment; ease of charging at home; and vehicle quality and reliability. This year’s study was fielded in October-November 2020 and surveyed 9,632 owners of 2015-2021 model year BEVs and PHEVs.

Kia unveils roadmap for transformation, focusing on EVs and mobility solutions

  • 'Plan S' updated with three core pillars:

··· Advancing EV transition – complete 11 model EV lineup with 7 dedicated EVs by 2026; sell 1.6 mil eco-friendly vehicles annually by 2030

··· Strengthening PBV business – launch first PBV model in 2022; sell 1 mil units annually by 2030

··· Expanding future mobility services – diversify services to meet customer needs

  • 2021 Business Plan – global sales 2.92 mil units; revenue KRW 65.6 tln; operating profit KRW 3.5 tln
  • Mid- to long-term investment strategy – invest KRW 29 tln until 2025; maintain dividend payout at 25-30%

Kia announced an update to its 'Plan S' strategy for its future business at the 2021 CEO Investor Day, held digitally today in Seoul. The ambitious update to its mid- to long-term roadmap was presented by Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation.

"Kia is being reborn in 2021 with a new logo, new design, and new corporate name," said President Song. "Kia will transform into a brand that excites and inspires customers with innovative mobility experiences.”

‘Kia transformation’ takes the company toward a broader business portfolio to redefine the entire mobility ecosystem, starting with the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electrification. The renewed ‘Plan S’ strategy is underpinned by three core pillars: advancing electric vehicle (EV) transition, strengthening purpose-built vehicle (PBV) business, and expanding future mobility services.

Advancing EV transition

By 2030, eco-friendly vehicles such as EVs, HEVs and PHEVs will make up 40 percent of all sales for Kia, with an annual sales target of 1.6 million units. As part of this, Kia aims to grow EV sales to 880,000 units in 2030 and become a top global seller.

Starting with the launch of its first dedicated EV later this year, Kia will strengthen its EV lineup by 2026 with 11 new models – seven dedicated EVs built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture, and 4 based on existing ICE derivatives.

EVs built on E-GMP aim to set new benchmarks in All-Electric Range (AER), driving performance, interior space, and tech application. The EVs will function as smart devices with expanded application of Audio Video Navigation Telematics (AVNT), Over-the-Air (OTA) and Feature on Demand (FoD) services.

The first dedicated EV from Kia, codenamed CV, will be featured with HDA2 (Highway Driving Assist Level 2) technology. Starting in 2023, Kia EVs will be equipped with Highway Driving Pilot (HDP), a crucial autonomous driving Level 3 development.

Further product details and performance specifications for the CV will be revealed next month.

Strengthening PBV business

Kia will unveil its first purpose-built vehicle (PBV) in 2022, with further PBVs to be launched according to market needs. The company is targeting annual sales of 1 million units by 2030 to become a world leader in PBVs. To this end, Kia will develop a variety of specialized vehicles based on its PBV-dedicated skateboard platforms.

Kia plans to further expand its PBV business through open innovation by cooperating with other companies to develop micro/large board platforms for unmanned delivery and e-commerce sectors. The company will also advance its own highly scalable small board platforms and technologies since the company expects market demand for these services to increase globally.

Expanding future mobility services

Kia’s mobility services will gain a competitive edge by carefully targeting and focusing on core areas.

In the business-to-consumer domain, Kia will expand existing services. In Spain, the company’s flagship car-sharing service Wible will be expanded with Wible Más and Wible Empresas (tentatively named). The car usership service ‘KiaMobility’, which was launched in September last year as a pilot project in Italy and Russia, will also launch in additional European markets.

In the business-to-government and business-to-business, Kia will launch an EV-based service that combines subscription and car-sharing. Under this new mobility service concept, vehicles will be used for business on weekdays and rented by individuals on the weekends.

Kia’s subscription program ‘Kia Flex’, which was introduced in Korea in 2019, will launch a global version later this year under the name ‘Kia Subscription.’ The service will be operated by Sixt Leasing, which was acquired by Hyundai Motor Group last year, and the vehicles will be provided by the company's regional affiliates and dealers.

Future business plans

(1) Business targets

Kia forecasts operating profit growth this year, based on increased sales volume and improved Average Selling Price (ASP) and product mix. In summary:

  • 2021 Global Sales (based on wholesale): 2,922,000 units, 12.1 percent increase Y/y
  • 2021 Revenue: KRW 65.6 trillion, 10.8 percent increase Y/y
  • 2021 Operating Profit: KRW 3.5 trillion, 70.1 percent increase Y/y

(2) Operating profit margin

With increased profitability for new EV models, Kia made upward adjustments to its operating profit margin targets from the figures initially announced last year. Kia now targets 5.4 percent operating profit margin in 2021, and 7,9 percent operating profit margin in 2025.

(3) Basis for the increase in operating profit margin

Balanced growth in both advanced and emerging markets

Kia plans to expand its mid- to long-term sales to 3.8 million units in 2025. The percentage of eco-friendly vehicle sales, which is expected to reach around 10 percent of total sales by 2021, is forecasted to increase to 22 percent by 2025. For emerging markets, the company will expand its market share through local CKD (complete knock-down) production.

Product mix improvement

Kia expects that the ASP and product mix improvement, which led to the company’s profitability enhancement last year, will continue. In particular, the company’s RV (recreational vehicle) sales share is expected to continue to rise from 56 percent in 2020 to 65 percent in 2025.

Improving profitability of electric vehicles

It is expected that Kia will enter a new level of EV profitability with the release of CV later this year. The company expects to achieve profitability at the level of existing ICE models in 2025. The company also predicts that EV cost improvement will be continuously strengthened through economies of scale due to the expansion of EV volume and the reduction of material cost through R&D investment.

Stable and steady investment plan

Kia's investment outlay from 2020 to 2025 is expected to be KRW 29 trillion. Kia will maintain the annual investment level of around KRW 5 trillion, reducing the current investment in existing traditional business segments while gradually increasing the proportion of strategic investment for future projects. Furthermore, the company will expand its investment in R&D.

KIA WINS TRIFECTA OF 2021 “BEST CAR FOR THE MONEY” AWARDS FROM U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Three Popular Kia Models – the Forte Sedan, Soul Compact SUV and the All-New Sorento SUV Take Top Honors in Their Respective Categories

  • Sorento and Soul named “Best Car for the Money” for the fifth consecutive year.
  • Awards based on overall vehicle quality and value based on five-year cost of ownership.

IRVINE, Calif., February 9, 2021 – Three of the world-class vehicles from Kia Motors America were named “Best Cars for the Money” in their respective categories by U.S. News & World Report. Taking top honors this year are the 2021 Forte, Sorento and Soul models.

“Kia has outperformed the industry with a world-class lineup of sporty sedans and undeniably capable SUVs, and these Best Cars for the Money awards from U.S. News & World Report speak to the strength and appeal of our entire product line,” said Russell Wager, vice president, marketing, Kia Motors America. “It is not enough to offer stylish, functional and technologically-advanced vehicles that meet and exceed the wants and needs of our customers. There also must be an exceptional value proposition. Our goal is to consistently deliver on that promise.”

Winners were chosen on the basis of quality and value. Quality is determined by each vehicle’s performance in U.S. News & World Report Best Car Rankings and value is measured by a combination of transaction prices and five-year total ownership costs.

“The Kia Sorento’s low price and operating costs make it a great value, and that value comes without compromises on features, comfort or performance,” said Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor, U.S. News & World Report. “Car reviewers love the Forte for its roomy passenger cabin and long list of standard features. Its low price and long-term ownership costs make it a great value. This is a car that buyers – and their budgets – will enjoy owning for the long haul. And the Kia Soul has plenty of interior space and an excellent infotainment system. Its long warranty keeps repair costs low, making it an excellent long-term value.”

KIA MOTORS TO “ACCELERATE THE GOOD” THROUGH DONATIONS TO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PROGRAMS IMPACTED BY THE PANDEMIC

Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, New Jersey to Receive a $50,000 Donation from Kia; Donations to Additional High Schools to be Announced

  • Campaign is an extension of Kia’s “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiatives which includes college scholarships, homeless youth assistance, and pandemic relief
  • Kia’s new “The Game Must Go On” creative elements; and a :30-second spot, entitled “The Bear & The Eagle” featuring the 2021 Sorento SUV, available at YouTube.com/Kia

IRVINE, Calif., February 5, 2021 – As America readies for the action of the field this Sunday, Kia Motors America today announced an all-out blitz in support of America’s youth, specifically those whose football dreams have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. After 11 consecutive years of award-winning and thought-provoking ads in the big game, this year, Kia will focus on giving back directly to young people nationwide through a new charitable initiative in support of high school football programs across the country.

The first high school recipient is Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J. With 68 players on the team roster, in the fall of 2020, the Woodrow Wilson Tigers suspended their season due to budget cuts and social distancing mandates. Additional high school football programs will be added to the campaign and announced over the coming weeks.

“Football is America’s game, and this Sunday will provide the welcome break we all need from the pandemic. As we thought about it more, we realized Kia could use this as an opportunity to help high school players keep working toward their dreams of someday being on football’s biggest stage,” said Russell Wager, vice president, marketing, Kia Motors America. “Kia is continuing to help young people in need get back some of their pre-pandemic lives. We admire the resolve and determination of the Woodrow Wilson Tigers and look forward to celebrating more extraordinary young people across the country who simply want to play the game they love.”

Supporting high school football teams is the latest extension of Kia Motors’ “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiative, which began in 2019 when the Great Unknowns Scholarship was established to help young people in need get a foothold in higher education. At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Kia continued these efforts by making two separate $1 million donations to organizations that support America’s homeless youth population. In addition to the monetary donations, Kia Team Member volunteers assembled personal protective equipment (PPE) at Kia’s manufacturing plant in Georgia, ultimately delivering more than 550,000 face shields to hospitals and medical centers across the country.

“We’re honored and humbled to accept such a wonderful donation from Kia Motors,” said, Camden City School Superintendent, Katrina McCombs. “Our children and student-athletes deserve every opportunity to compete in the classroom and on the athletic fields. We know first-hand that this generous donation will help restore and elevate our football program for some very deserving student-athletes.”

Additional campaign elements include a :30-second video, “The Game Must Go On,” which illustrates the impact cancelled sports programs can have on young people. A :30-second broadcast spot, entitled “The Bear & The Eagle,”  featuring the all-new 2021 Kia Sorento SUV will debut on network and cable outlets. The spot takes the viewer on a surreal journey into a wide variety of wilderness adventures while highlighting various features of Kia’s rugged and capable new SUV.
