  • Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv’s combined contributions total USD 4 billion, with each owning 50 percent stake in the joint venture

SEOUL / DUBLIN / BOSTON, September 23, 2019 – Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv announced today that they will be forming an autonomous driving joint venture. This partnership brings together one of the industry’s most innovative vehicle technology providers and one of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers.

The joint venture will advance the design, development and commercialization of SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous technologies, furthering the partners’ leadership position in the global autonomous driving ecosystem. The joint venture will begin testing fully driverless systems in 2020 and have a production-ready autonomous driving platform available for robotaxi providers, fleet operators, and automotive manufacturers in 2022.

As part of the agreement, Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv will each have a 50 percent ownership stake in the joint venture, valued at a total of USD 4 billion. Aptiv will contribute its autonomous driving technology, intellectual property, and approximately 700 employees focused on the development of scalable autonomous driving solutions. Hyundai Motor Group affiliates — Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Hyundai Mobis — will collectively contribute USD 1.6 billion in cash at closing and USD 0.4 billion in vehicle engineering services, R&D resources, and access to intellectual property.

The partnership reinforces the companies’ shared vision of making mobility more safe, green, connected, and accessible by advancing the development and commercialization of the highest-performing and safest autonomous vehicles.

“The new joint venture marks the start of a journey with Aptiv toward our common goal of commercializing autonomous driving,” said Euisun Chung, Executive Vice Chairman, Hyundai Motor Group. “The combined capabilities of Aptiv, a leading global technology company, and our Group, a global OEM, will create invaluable synergy to lead the autonomous driving landscape.”

“This partnership further strengthens Aptiv’s industry-leading capabilities in the development of advanced driver assistance systems, vehicle connectivity solutions, and Smart Vehicle Architecture,” said Kevin Clark, President and Chief Executive Officer, Aptiv. “Hyundai Motor Group’s cutting-edge engineering and R&D capabilities make them our partner of choice to advance the development of a production-ready autonomous platform.”

The new joint venture will be led by Karl Iagnemma, President, Aptiv Autonomous Mobility and headquartered in Boston, with technology centers across the United States and Asia, including Korea. Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv will each appoint an equal number of directors to govern the joint venture.

The joint venture’s Korea operations will serve as a key technology center as well as a base for vehicle modification and a testbed for autonomous driving mobility service platforms. Hyundai Motor Group’s strong presence in the local automotive market and the country’s world-class 5G infrastructure are anticipated to spur the partnership’s development efforts.

Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv: Creating a Safe and Trusted Driverless World

Hyundai Motor Group has created a value chain based on automobiles, steel, and construction, and its business areas also include logistics, finance, IT and service. With approximately 250,000 employees worldwide, the Group’s key affiliates include auto-making arms Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors as well as auto-parts making unit Hyundai Mobis.

Hyundai Motor Group’s latest investment epitomizes the Korean automotive leader's ongoing efforts towards realizing fully autonomous driving with the highest level of safety. Hyundai first began testing autonomous vehicles on public roads in the U.S. in 2015 with a license from the state of Nevada.

During CES in 2017, Hyundai advanced its trials in urban environments, demonstrating self-driving technologies to the public with its autonomous IONIQ model. In February 2018, Hyundai successfully demonstrated Level 4 autonomous driving technology on a highway, as five NEXO fuel cell electric vehicles travelled 190 kilometers from Seoul to Pyeonchang without any driver engagement.

Aptiv is a global technology company with an industry-leading portfolio of advanced mobility solutions that includes perception systems, software algorithms, compute platforms, and data and power distribution.

Aptiv’s autonomous driving engineers have been leading the development of software for high-performing self-driving cars since the historic 2007 DARPA Challenge. The company conducted the first coast-to-coast automated drive in the United States in 2015, and was the first to commercially deploy autonomous vehicles globally.

Aptiv operates more than 100 autonomous vehicles on multiple continents, across a range of driving conditions and environments, including the largest commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas with a ride-hailing network. To date, the company has provided more than 70,000 paid autonomous rides, servicing more than 2,700 destinations, while maintaining a near perfect average passenger rating of 4.95-out-of-five stars.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions and is expected to close early in the second quarter of 2020.

KIA SOUL NAMED SEGMENT WINNER IN J.D. POWER 2019 MULTIMEDIA QUALITY AND SATISFACTION STUDY

All-New Model’s Next-Gen Infotainment and Technology Options Increase Consumer Satisfaction

  • Soul ranks highest in Multimedia Quality among all compact vehicles
  • Award comes on the heels of Soul being named among the top 10 vehicles in the industry in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

IRVINE, Calif., September 23, 2019 –
Kia Motors America’s (KMA) beloved urban runabout – the Soul – has been awarded Best Multimedia Quality in its award segment in the J.D. Power 2019 Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study. The announcement follows Kia’s award as the highest ranked mass market brand in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for the fifth consecutive year, with the Soul recognized among the top 10 vehicles in the industry1.

“The Soul has been an undeniable success since its launch in 2009, and with the redesign of this third-generation model, the technologically advanced Soul is equipped to be a strong contender in the marketplace,” said Michael Cole, chief operating officer and EVP, Kia Motors America. “Being named Best Multimedia Quality among Compact Vehicles by J.D. Power serves to further reinforce Kia’s commitment to world-class quality and a premium ownership experience.”

The all-new Soul delivers unmatched style, peppy performance, thrilling technology and urban practicality, evolving the popular subcompact into the most advanced and innovative Soul yet. For the 2020 model year, the Soul offers impressive technology, including standard Android Auto2 and Apple CarPlay3 and a suite of available options including: Bluetooth®4 Multi-Connection, interior mood lighting, a 10.25-inch HD color touchscreen5 with split screen functionality and a 640-watt Harman/Kardon6 audio system – twice the wattage of the previous generation Soul.

“Simply offering a variety of multimedia technologies isn’t enough,” said Brent Gruber, Senior Director, Automotive Quality Practice at J.D. Power. “In order to enhance the vehicle experience, owners want those technologies to be problem free and work as expected. In the compact segment no vehicle demonstrates that high level of multimedia quality better than the Kia Soul.”

The J.D. Power Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study measures the experiences and opinions of vehicle owners regarding the quality, design and features of their audio, communication, entertainment and navigation systems in the first 90 days of ownership. Multimedia system quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality – the Kia Soul scored a 9.0 PP100.

Kia Motors Invests in IONITY to Democratize High-Power EV Charging Network

  • Kia joins IONITY in cooperation with founding partners BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group with Porsche AG
  • The investment to enable EVs with 800V to reduce charging time significantly by a charging capacity of up to 350kW
  • The commitment to electrification of the European transport sector relies on international cooperation across the automotive industry

(SEOUL) September 9, 2019 – Kia Motors Company alongside Hyundai Motor Company today announced its investment into IONITY, a joint venture established by global automakers. Under the agreement Kia and Hyundai, affiliated automotive companies for Hyundai Motor Group (the Group), will play a key role in further enhancing the availability of EV charging stations with additional convenience benefits for its customers.

The decision to join this network will provide enhanced benefits for Kia and Hyundai’s European customers. Starting in 2021, Kia and Hyundai EVs will be equipped with 800 volt charging systems to accommodate IONITY’s maximum charging power of 350 kilowatts. Customers will be able to use IONITY’s HPC facilities, which are equipped with digital payment options, to significantly reduce charging times and better facilitate long-distance travel.

IONITY is a joint venture established in 2017 between BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, and Volkswagen Group with Porsche AG. Since its formation, it currently has nearly 140 charging stations in Europe in operation with 50 more under construction. The technology of IONITY is characterized by a charging capacity of up to 350 kilowatts, its use of the universal charging standard Combined Charging System ensures the widest possible compatibility across EVs.

IONITY is expanding its network to 400 fast-charging stations by 2020, with an average of at least one site every 120 kilometers along major European highways. Its European distribution and brand-agnostic approach will significantly improve the image and accessibility of electric vehicles for both current EV users and prospective buyers.

“Our participation in this joint venture reaffirms the Group’s commitment to future electromobility,” said Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “I am confident that our work with IONITY will open a new era of high-power charging experiences, where charging will be seamless and easier than refueling for our customers.”

Through extensive R&D efforts and multiple partnerships with industry leaders, the Hyundai Motor Group has continually cemented its position as a leader in electric vehicles and alternative propulsion. In May, the Group announced a partnership with Croatia’s Rimac Automobili for development of high-performance EVs.

The investment in IONITY accentuates the Group’s continued efforts to become game changers in a low-carbon emissions society, which includes deployment of 44 eco-friendly models by 2025. The Group will leverage the partnership to provide its customers with innovative experiences through enhanced electromobility.

IONITY is glad to welcome the new shareholder on board. “Hyundai Motor Group brings significant international experience and know-how with a full strategic commitment to electromobility. The participation of new investors in IONITY is a clear signal of trust indicating that the work of our young company is already bearing fruit,” said IONITY CEO Michael Hajesch.

The Group will obtain equal shares in IONITY as those of founding partners, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, and the Porsche AG.

Kia Motors connects with millions of esports fans at League of Legends European Championship Summer Finals 2019

  • Kia Motors sponsors LEC Summer Finals on its first partnership with LEC
  • The two-day competition in Athens offers an opportunity to showcase Kia’s youth-oriented appeal through popular vehicles, video commercials

(SEOUL) September 9, 2019 – Kia Motors Corporation sponsors the League of Legends European Championship Summer Finals 2019 in Athens for the first time, showcasing its popular vehicles and unveiling commercials designed to win the hearts of millions of Europe's electronic sports fans.

As an official partner of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens from Sept. 7-8, Kia Motors displays the All-New Kia Ceed and New Sportage models, and airs video commercials “Driving Your Game -- Kia-LEC” and “The Perfect Intro.”

“Through our collaborative marketing with LEC, which enjoys the most innovative competition among different leagues around the world, Kia Motors has been able to approach the younger generations and get close to them naturally,” said Artur Martins, the Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Kia Motors. “Kia Motors expresses its deep appreciation to the tournament organizer and video game developer Riot Games for its steady support throughout 2019. We hope to continue our excellent partnership.”

The two commercials, which are available on YouTube, are aired from the stadium’s main screen. The Driving Your Game commercial features the Kia Stinger, All-New e-Niro, New Sportage, All-New Kia Ceed and Kia Stonic models; and The Perfect Intro commercial -- created as an official season-ending film for the LEC -- features the Kia Stinger, and is distributed on various social media channels.

The Ceed and Sportage models -- both emblazoned with official LEC graphics -- are displayed beside the broadcasting booth.

The number of esports fans worldwide is estimated to reach 422 million people in 2019 from 281 million in 2016, and expected to top 600 million by 2023. Although organized online and offline competitions have long been part of the video game industry, they were not significant until live streaming became a dominant force around the world. By the 2010s, eports has become a major driver of the industry, with many game developers actively designing games tailored to the professional esports sector.

“We are privileged to have Kia Motors choose the LEC for its first partnership in esports, and humbled by Kia’s support in activating our partnership,” said Alban Dechelotte, the Head of Business Development at Riot Games Europe. “By offering various kinds of financial, programmic and marketing support, Kia Motors has enabled the creation of some of the most engaging contents this year. The overwhelmingly positive reception from players speaks volumes about the quality of our partnership, and we look forward to the next chapter of our shared story.”

This year’s tournament marks Kia’s first sponsorship of the League of Legends European Championship, where Europe’s finest teams lock horns to lift the LEC trophy and secure their regional spot at Worlds 2019. The finals also hosts the second LEC Fan Festival, where visitors can take part in a variety of exciting activities, such as cosplay and meetings with their favorite pros.

At the LEC, Kia Motors also operates a games zone, where fans can play a digital game featuring the Sportage and Ceed models, and a photo zone where they can take photos and win lottery prizes. Some 10,000 number of people participated in the two-day finals as audiences, and 600 thousand people watched the competition from around the world.

Hyundai Motor Group Develops Wearable Vest Exoskeleton to Alleviate Burden in Overhead Work

  • New Wearable Vest EXoskeleton (VEX) is up to 42% lighter than competing products
  • The VEX functions without the need for a battery by imitating human shoulder joint and using multilink lift assistant module
  • Hyundai Motor Group also announces commercialization of its Chairless EXoskeleton
  • Hyundai Motor Group to expand robot application into EV charging and personal mobility

SEOUL, September 4, 2019 — Hyundai Motor Group has developed new Vest EXoskeleton (VEX), a wearable robot created to assist industrial workers who spend long hours working in overhead environments.

The VEX enhances productivity and reduces fatigue of industrial workers by imitating the movement of human joints to boost load support and mobility. The wearable vest the polycentric axis – combining multiple pivot points with multi-link muscular assistance – to function, eliminating the need for a battery.

At 2.5kg, VEX weighs 22-42% less than competing products and is worn like a backpack. The user places their arms through the shoulder straps of the vest, then fastens the chest and waist buckles. The back section can adjust in length by up to 18 cm to fit a variety of body sizes, while the degree of force assistance can be adjusted over six levels – up to as much as 5.5 kgf.

“VEX gives workers greater load support, mobility, and adaptability when operating in overhead environments.” stated DongJin Hyun, head of Robotics team of Hyundai Motor Group. “Workers will also appreciate how light VEX is to wear and work with.”

The newly-developed VEX is targeted at production-line workers whose job is primarily overhead, such as those bolting the underside of vehicles, fitting brake tubes, and attaching exhausts. The development of the VEX included a pilot program in two Hyundai Motor Group plants in the US. The trial was widely successful in assisting workers and boosting productivity and both plants incorporated VEX systems in their production lines.

The Group is considering on implementing the VEX on plants around the world. It is expected to go into commercial production in December by Hyundai Rotem and is projected to cost as much as 30% lower than existing products which usually costs around 5,000 dollars.

Hyundai Motor Group commercializes Chairless EXoskeleton
As part of the Group’s plans to develop a diverse range of robotics technologies, another lightweight wearable device is soon to be commercialized. The ‘Chairless EXoskeleton’ (CEX) supports workers to maintain a sitting position without a stool or chair. At 1.6kg, it is light yet highly durable and able to withstand weights of up to 150kg.

The CEX’s waist, thigh, and knee belts can be easily fitted and adjusted to the user’s body size and height. It also features three different angle settings (85 / 70 / 55 degrees). By reducing the user’s back and lower body muscle activity by 40%, it reduces fatigue and improves efficiency.

The development of the VEX and CEX demonstrates Hyundai Motor Group’s steadfast commitment to the health and wellbeing of its industrial workers and its ongoing exploration of advanced robotics.

The Group also plans to showcase diverse robotics technology, including a ‘Hotel Service Robot,’ ‘Sales Service Robot,’ ‘Electric Vehicle Charging Manipulator,’ and other ‘Robotic Personal Mobility’ solutions in the future.

The future for wearable robotics
According to the International Federation of Robotics, the wearable robotics industry is growing 14% annually, a rate which is accelerating. By 2021 approximately 630,000 commercial robots will be sold worldwide, with the greatest demand coming from the automotive sector. In 2017, 126,000 robots were supplied to the auto sector, making-up 33% of all commercial robots.

Recognizing the market trend, Hyundai Motor Group is making active investments and strengthening its presence within the growing robotics industry by securing relevant technologies.
