Kia partners with The Ocean Cleanup in journey to become a ‘Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider’

(SEOUL) April 28, 2022 – Kia Corporation and The Ocean Cleanup have formally commenced a seven-year cooperation to explore innovative ways to co-create solutions that will support a more sustainable future.

Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation and Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, attended a signing ceremony at Kia’s Headquarters in Seoul on April 27 to officially confirm the global partnership between Kia and The Ocean Cleanup.

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands, developing and scaling technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic by stemming the inflow via rivers, as well as by cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean. For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup is developing large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate the plastic for periodic removal. To curb the inflow of plastic via rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed Interceptor™ Solutions to halt and extract river plastic before it reaches the ocean.

Seen as an essential initiative in Kia’s journey for a sustainable future, Kia will support The Ocean Cleanup financially to initiate ocean and river cleanup projects, and create a resource circulation system that will help avoid harvested plastics ending up back in the environment by integrating part of the catch from The Ocean Cleanup’s innovative devices into Kia’s production and value chain process.

For seven years, Kia will support The Ocean Cleanup as an official global partner via financial contributions and in-kind supplies to support ocean operations and the construction of the various river cleaning devices– The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptor Solutions. In addition, Kia will supply four electric vehicles including one EV6 and three Niro EVs to the organization’s headquarters in the Netherlands. In return, The Ocean Cleanup will also supply usable fractions of the collected plastic and share the organization's research results and relevant data on reducing plastic pollution with Kia.

Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation, commented, “The key to Kia’s vision for a sustainable future is not just to change the product and service areas, but to make positive changes for the planet. “Kia will continue to make inspirational movements through open partnerships with various partners with organizations like The Ocean Cleanup that have innovative technologies and ideas," he added.

Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, added: “Plastic is not inherently a bad material, but we must use it responsibly. We demonstrate how we can turn pollution into a solution by launching applications that help clean the oceans and simultaneously – together with our partner Kia – provide proof that recycled plastic can be used sustainably. I hope we can inspire others to do the same. This cooperation is the next step in our efforts to ensure that our catch does not end up back in the environment while using its value to support our cleanup efforts further.”

This partnership is one of the key strategies in Kia’s corporate vision to build a sustainable future for mobility. Kia plans to increase its percentage of plastic re-use to 20 percent by 2030, and expects to further contribute to environmental protection by establishing and activating a ‘Virtuous Recycling Loop’ to minimize climate impact when disposing of vehicles.

Kia embodied its commitment to take steps towards a more sustainable future by revealing the all-new Niro at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show on November 25, 2021. The all-new Kia Niro used sustainable materials developed from recycled wallpaper, eucalyptus leaves, and water-based paint to minimize the impact on the environment and reduce waste. Kia plans to continuously expand its eco-friendly materials throughout the vehicle, including a plan to phase out the use of animal leather in all vehicles in the future.

About The Ocean Cleanup
The Ocean Cleanup develops and scales technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. They aim to achieve this goal by taking a two-pronged approach: stemming the inflow via rivers and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean. For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup is developing large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate the plastic for periodic removal. This plastic is tracked, traced through DNV's chain of custody model to certify claims of origin when recycling it into new products. To curb the tide via rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed Interceptor™ Solutions to halt and extract riverine plastic before it reaches the ocean. Founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, The Ocean Cleanup now employs a broadly multi-disciplined team of approximately 100. The foundation is headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Kia initiates ‘purpose-built vehicle’ strategy with launch of Niro Plus

  • Kia to make Niro Plus ‘purpose-built vehicle’ (PBV) available in Korea
  • Kia to bring Niro Plus taxi model for Korean taxi operators
  • Kia planning general model of Niro Plus for business and recreational purposes, available in select overseas markets
  • Kia developing further micro to large PBVs on dedicated platform; targeting global PBV leadership by 2030
  • Kia expects PBVs to be important part of company’s development as a ‘Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider’

(SEOUL) April 27, 2022 – Kia has today revealed the Niro Plus, its first ‘purpose-built vehicle’ (PBV). As a Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider, Kia is exploring diverse ways to help people and businesses move beyond traditional automotive, and the company expects its PBV models to be an important part of future mobility.

The Kia Niro Plus will be deployed as a general model and zero-emission taxi in Korea, with the company modifying the first generation Niro EV to make it suitable for the demands of modern-day car-hailing. Its introduction follows the launch of the Ray Van in February, Korea's first single-seater van designed to satisfy the growing national demand for small cargo delivery services.

Kia is the one of the first movers in the global PBV market and plans to become a market leader by 2030. To this end, the company is developing a dedicated platform upon which PBVs of different shapes and sizes can sit, meeting evolving customer needs and market trends.

Kia will launch its first dedicated PBV model in 2025, by which time the global PBV market is expected to mature. The brand’s first dedicated PBV will be similar in size to a mid-sized vehicle, with inherent scalability.

Sangdae Kim, Head of Kia eLCV Business Division, commented: “Kia is transforming its business strategy to focus on popularizing EVs, and introducing new mobility products that are tailored to the needs of users in markets around the world. The Niro Plus is our first step into the world of PBVs, a market that holds great potential for future development.”

Niro Plus – Kia’s first PBV suitable for business and recreation

The Niro Plus is firmly part of Kia’s plans to become a Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider and leader in PBV development. It also reflects a greater public demand for more sustainable means of working and travelling.

Kia is planning a general version of the Niro Plus for private owners, which can be used for many business and recreational purposes including car-hailing services. For example, Kia is envisaging a scenario where a small business owner uses the Niro Plus for work during the week, before making the most of its versatility at the weekend for leisure activities such as camping or visits to the seaside or mountains.

The demand for delivery and logistics services has increased significantly following the acceleration in e-commerce during the Covid-19 pandemic. As the PBV market grows, Kia plans to gradually expand its range from micro to large PBVs that can potentially offer an alternative to public transportation or even be used as mobile offices.

The general, non-taxi version of the Niro Plus will be made available in select overseas markets in the second half of the year. In addition to the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version, the Niro Plus will be available as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) electric vehicles in these markets, reflecting country-specific characteristics and diverse customer needs.

Kia aims to gradually expand its PBV business worldwide with the Niro Plus, and further launch markets and details will be announced soon.

Niro Plus taxi model – for Korean taxi operators

The Niro Plus taxi model is based on the first generation Niro EV – Kia’s popular electric crossover. Since its launch in 2018, the Niro EV has sold globally, demonstrating the growing public appetite for versatile BEVs.

Kia has made several enhancements to the first generation Niro to make the Niro Plus ready to meet the robust demands of Korean taxi operators. Length and height of Niro Plus taxi model have increased by 10 mm and 80 mm respectively (compared to the first generation Niro without roof rack), to give occupants more space inside the cabin. Slimmed-down structures have also contributed to the greater cabin space, with the Niro Plus taxi model featuring thinner seats and door trims compared to the original Niro EV. Additional passenger safety and convenience features including door reflectors and assist handles are also available in both the taxi and general versions.

An integrated All-in-One Display for taxi model greatly improves convenience and safety for the driver, by removing the need for multiple devices and screens. The display will include all information relevant for taxi drivers to seamlessly go about their work, including navigation, app taximeter, digital tachograph and voice recognition. The system will also include data on relevant points of interest and locations of nearby EV charging stations. Kia plans to partner with local and national businesses to offer over-the-air (OTA) updates and services.

Notes to editors

All data contained in this press release is subject to change, and certain tech features are available in specific markets only. Product details for each market will be confirmed closer to start of sale.

April 22, 2021, Palm Springs, CA – This week, the all-new Kia Sportage will take to the desert roads of California for its National Press Introduction.  Media outlets from around the country will have an opportunity to experience the Sportage both on- and off-road to fully understand its wide range of driving characteristics.

As Kia’s longest running nameplate which pioneered its segment, the Sportage undergoes its most significant change to date as the fifth generation is unveiled. Developed as part of Kia’s new global brand transformation, “Movement that Inspires,” the all-new 2023 Sportage subcompact SUV delivers more of everything for today’s savvy, adventurous and eco-conscious consumers.

Exuding the brand’s new “Opposites United” design philosophy, the new Sportage is a welcome addition in a sea of bland-looking subcompact SUVs that crowd today’s market. Significantly larger, more capable and powerful, and more fuel efficient, the fifth-generation model debuts a number of Sportage firsts including an available dual panoramic curved digital display and an exciting new variant that will literally take consumers to new heights. Most Sportage trims will now be assembled in the U.S., alongside the award-winning Telluride, Sorento, and K5 at Kia’s manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia.

The Sportage delivers something for everyone, with a diverse lineup and trim levels that include the LX, EX, SX, SX-Prestige and X-Line, while the all-new Sportage X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige trims allow drivers to venture further into nature with off-road ready features including all-terrain tires, among other elements.  To that end, journalists will drive the new Sportage X-Pro this week on a specially designed course built to demonstrate its rugged capabilities and off-road prowess.  From side slopes to steep descents and deep ruts, the Sportage will tread a variety of obstacles and challenges.

The 2023 Sportage MSRP starts at $25,990 for the FWD LX model and tops out at $36,790 for the AWD X-Pro Prestige model.  The destination charge is an additional $1,255.  The Sportage arrives in Kia showrooms this spring.

A Balancing Act in Design

Bearing all the elements of Kia’s new “Opposites United” design philosophy, Sportage’s distinctive appearance leaves a lasting impression with its contrasting but unified elements. Smooth, soft surfaces are offset by rugged, sheer forms, combining off-road confidence with cutting edge modern cues. It’s sleek and ready for anything.

  • Tiger nose grille gets more technical with floating design, perched above blacked out grille graphic that spans the entire width of the front fascia
  • Distinct “boomerang” daytime running lights immediately draw the eye with dramatic angles, which push the uniquely shaped headlights to the outer corners
  • Angular fenders lend Sportage a sharp and strong presence
  • Crisp shoulder line rises from the hood and runs down the side, adding more volume to overall shape
  • Muscular shoulders around the rear flow into futuristic “notch-shaped” taillights, which are seamlessly connected by a thin black graphic across the tailgate

A Living Space Both Comfortable and Connected

Inspired by high-end outdoor products, furniture, and modern architecture, the Sportage’s interior is a new concept for Kia, transforming the cabin into a pleasant living space, complete with near-luxury, thoughtful features:

  • Futuristic driver cockpit with available dual panoramic curved display5 seamlessly connects two screens for nearly 25-inches of digital bliss (12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment screen)
  • Angular air vents hug the curved display for a simple and technical overall dash layout
  • Asymmetrical console puts controls and buttons at driver’s hand with ease, while also boasting smart storage solutions, including cup holders that come undone when they need to hold something other than a cup (think tablet, etc.)
  • Real stitching and detailed pattern on the seats creates a feeling of indulgence (SX and above), along with animal-free leather (EX and above)
  • Innovative coat hanger molded behind front headrests, with useable seatbacks that also house USB ports and an integrated hook for shopping bags or for organizing charging cables6

To further distinguish itself from the hot-selling Seltos and more clearly define its space in Kia’s robust SUV lineup, the Sportage has gone from one of the smallest SUVs in its class to one of the largest. With best-in-class rear legroom[7], rear passengers are greeted with a more relaxing space where they can feel good about kicking back.

  • Overall length is 7.1 inches longer than previous generation, with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase
  • Taller and wider by a half inch compared to the previous generation
  • Class-leading rear legroom with 41.3 inches of room7
  • Best-in-class rear cargo capacity with 39.6 cu-ft. of space
  • Dual level cargo floor

To match the high-tech interior, the Sportage abounds with standard and available infotainment to keep drivers connected, confident, and informed of what’s going on around them.

  • Standard Android Auto8and Apple CarPlay9 on all trims
  • Intuitive new touchpad with climate and audio controls sits beneath infotainment screen; switching between functions changes what physical knobs do, whether it’s controlling temperature or adjusting the volume
  • Available 360-degree Surround-View Monitor with 3D view provides a bird’s-eye view of vehicle surroundings10
  • Available Harman Kardon11 premium audio system
  • Multi-connection Bluetooth12 simultaneously links two smartphones
  • Personalized profile that can be set up to remember climate and infotainment preferences, phone connection pairings, etc. (EX and above)
  • Available wireless charging13 pad built inside the upper tray

    • A Sportage first, the Wi-Fi Hotspot15 connects up to five devices to 4G LTE-based internet
    • Includes over the air map updates for eligible vehicles
    • Refreshed Kia Access App with newly added compatibility through Apple- and Android-based smartwatches to access features like remote climate control, door lock/unlock and more16
    • Peace of mind with the recently introduced stolen vehicle tracking and immobilization capability
    • Connected Routing: Cloud-based system calculates the optimal route using real-time maps and predicted traffic info based on historical information and AI to learn the preferred routes of users
    • Smart Speaker Integration lets customers use Amazon Alexa17 or Google Assistant18 enabled smart speakers or devices to remotely control some functions (such as remote start16)

New Foundation

Underpinned by the same all-new 3rd generation “N3” platform found in the Sorento, the chassis provides a rigid base and aims to offer:

  • Better driving dynamics via expanded use of hot-stamped parts and ultra-high-strength steel for increased average tensile strength and torsional stiffness
  • Minimized road, wind, and engine noise via greater application of sound absorbing and insulating materials

A Diverse Engine Lineup

Whether you’re an urban adventurer or an off-pavement explorer, there’s a Sportage for you.

  • New 2.5-liter I-4 is more powerful and more fuel efficient than outgoing engine
    • Paired with new 8-speed automatic transmission
    • 187 horsepower
    • FWD or available AWD (AWD-equipped models gain 1.5 inches in ground clearance over outgoing Sportage)
    • The available Active AWD system3 uses electro-hydraulic coupling with center-locking differential to actively distribute power between front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions.
    • Additional powertrains available as Turbo Hybrid and Turbo Plug-in Hybrid

Sportage All-Wheel Drive X-Line and X-Pro

In developing a reputation for building rugged and capable SUVs, Sportage is available in the X-Line and all-new Sportage X-Pro trims. Both come standard with an Active AWD system and a unique tread-like stitching pattern on unique and easy to clean SynTex synthetic leather seats.  The Sportage X-Pro will be featured at this week’s press event and will driven on a course designed to showcase its off-road abilities.

Sportage X-Line blends sporty and rugged looking exterior features:

  • Unique front and rear bumpers with a satin chrome surround create a tougher image, complemented by side garnish
  • Side mirrors, roof rack and window surrounds finished in gloss black for a sportier look
  • Raised roof rack rails to support adventure ready accessories
  • Exclusive 19-inch wheels

Sportage X-Pro has off-road hardware to match its design elements, so it doesn’t just look like a trail-ready vehicle – it is.

Arriving in showrooms this spring, the Sportage Hybrid will deliver an ideal mix of fuel efficiency and power along with an abundance of room for gear.  Significantly larger than the previous generation Sportage, the Hybrid will allow owners to enjoy class-leading rear seat legroom and rear cargo capacity2.  The “Opposites United” design language employed on Sportage brings a bold blend of modern styling and sporty visual elements, while its interior offers the latest in technology, including an expansive list of ADAS features and dual panoramic display screens (12.3-inch instrument panel display and 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen display) for nearly 25 inches of viewing.

This Sportage’s electrified performance comes from a seamless hybrid powertrain combining a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with a 44-kilowatt motor to achieve up to 43 mpg4.  Together, engine and motor make 227 horsepower channeled to either the front wheels or an active all-wheel-drive system.  The result is a fuel-sipping compact SUV that delivers an engaging driving experience.

“The new Sportage Hybrid SUV marks yet another step in Kia’s advance on sustainable mobility, as part of our global ‘Plan S’ efforts,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia America, Kia North America. “In addition to paving a new pathway to electrification, the Sportage Hybrid also delivers superb driving dynamics, cutting-edge design, and a vast array of technology for a world-class in-car experience.”

The Sportage Hybrid is offered in three trim levels: LX, EX, and SX-Prestige.  Base pricing begins at $27,290 for LX FWD and tops out at $36,190 for the SX-Prestige AWD.  The destination charge is $1,255.

New Foundation

Underpinned by the same all-new 3rd generation “N3” platform found in the Sorento line of vehicles, the Sportage Hybrid chassis provides a rigid base to achieve:

  • Better driving dynamics via expanded use of hot-stamped parts and ultra-high-strength steel for increased average tensile strength and torsional stiffness
  • Minimized road, wind, and engine noise via greater application of sound absorbing and insulating materials

The Sportage has gone from one of the smallest SUVs in its class to one of the largest:

  • Overall length is 7.1 inches longer than the previous generation, with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase
  • Taller and wider by a half inch compared to the previous generation
  • Class-leading rear legroom with 41.3 inches of room1
  • Best-in-Class rear cargo capacity of 39.5 cu-ft. of space1
  • Dual level cargo floor

Best of Both Worlds Power and Efficiency

The Sportage Hybrid blends performance and efficiency with an optimized powertrain:

  • 1.6-liter turbo GDI engine
  • 44kW permanent magnet electric motor
  • High-output 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery
  • 6-speed automatic transmission with rotary style shifter
  • Combined 227 horsepower
  • Up to 43 mpg in FWD
  • Class-leading 2,000 lb towing capacity
  • Active AWD is standard on EX and SX-Prestige trims, while LX is available with a choice of FWD and AWD
    • The available Active AWD system2 uses electro-hydraulic coupling with center-locking differential to actively distribute power between front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions
    • E-Handling uses the hybrid motor to deliver a confident driving experience
  • Standard paddle shifters and Drive Mode Select with ECO, Sport, Smart and Snow (AWD only) modes.

“Opposites United” Design

Closely mimicking the exterior of its gas-powered counterpart, the Sportage Hybrid bears all the elements of Kia’s new “Opposites United” design philosophy, developed as part of the Kia global brand transformation, “Movement that Inspires.”

  • Tiger nose grille gets more technical with floating design
  • Distinct “boomerang” daytime running lights
  • Angular fenders
  • Crisp shoulder line
  • Muscular shoulders around the rear flow into futuristic “notch-shaped” taillights, which are seamlessly connected by a thin black graphic across the tailgate
  • Unique 17-inch HEV wheel design
  • HEV badging

A Modern, Spacious, Tech-Savvy Interior

Inspired by high-end outdoor products, furniture, and modern architecture, the interior of the Sportage highlights a new concept for Kia, transforming the cabin into a pleasant living space, complete with near-luxury, thoughtful features:

  • Available dual panoramic curved display3 seamlessly connects two screens for nearly 25-inches of viewing (12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment screen)
  • Angular air vents
  • Asymmetrical console puts controls and buttons at driver’s hand with ease
  • Real stitching and detailed pattern on the seats creates a feeling of indulgence (SX-Prestige), along with animal-free leather (EX and above)
  • Innovative coat hanger molded behind front headrests with integrated hook for shopping bags or for organizing charging cables5

To match the high-tech interior, the Sportage Hybrid is packed with standard and available infotainment to keep drivers connected and informed of what’s going on around them:

  • Standard Android Auto6 and Apple CarPlay7 on all trims
  • Intuitive new touchpad with climate and audio controls sits beneath the infotainment screen
  • Available 360-degree Surround-View Monitor with 3D view (first time on Sportage) provides a bird’s-eye view of vehicle surroundings8
  • Available Harman-Kardon9 premium audio system
  • Multi-connection Bluetooth10 simultaneously links two smartphones (EX and SX-Prestige trims)
  • Personalized profile that can be set up to remember climate and infotainment preferences, including phone connection pairings (EX only)
  • Available wireless charging11 pad built inside the upper tray
  • Available Kia Connect12 services (first Kia application) provide advanced embedded connectivity:
    • Wi-Fi Hotspot13 connects up to five devices to 4G LTE-based internet
    • Includes over the air map updates for eligible vehicles
    • Refreshed Kia Access App with smartphone compatibility through Apple- and Android-based smartwatches to access features like remote climate control, door lock/unlock and more14
    • Peace of mind with the recently introduced stolen vehicle tracking and immobilization capability

    • Smart Speaker Integration lets customers use Amazon Alexa15 or Google Assistant16 enabled smart speakers or devices to remotely control some functions (such as remote start)

Advanced Driver Assistance Technology

The Sportage Hybrid has no shortage of standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems:17

  • Driver Attention Warning (DAW)18: Analyzes the driver's attention level and provides a warning if a break is recommended. It may also provide a leading vehicle departure alert, if the leading vehicle departs from a stop and the driver does not react within a certain time period.
  • LED Headlights with High Beam Assist (HBA): Engineered to automatically dim the headlights when an oncoming or leading vehicle is detected, then return to high beams when vehicles are no longer detected
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA): Helps detect lane markings and vehicles ahead and provides steering inputs to help center the vehicle in the lane
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA): Helps detect lane markings and provides steering inputs to help prevent the vehicle from leaving the lane while driving
  • Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA) with Cyclist detection capability: Warns if there is risk of a collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist in front of the vehicle while driving and may automatically assist with braking
  • Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)19: Provides a warning to the driver to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle
  • Rear View Monitor (RVM) with Dynamic Parking Guidance: Provides view behind the vehicle, with guidelines that adjust to follow the direction the vehicle is turning
  • Reverse Parking Distance Warning: Detects certain objects behind the vehicle, issuing an audible warning when an obstruction is detected. The warning tone chimes faster as the vehicle gets closer to the detected object

Available Advanced Driver Assistance Systems:

  • Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM)20: Projects live video view of adjacent lanes in the instrument cluster when activated via the turn signal
  • Blind Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist (BCA): May help avoid a collision with rear-side vehicles in changing lanes
  • Blind Spot Collision Avoidance (BCA-PE) with Parallel Exit (first Kia application): May help avoid collisions with rear-side vehicles when exiting parallel parking spot by automatically assisting with braking
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist (RCCA): Helps detect approaching cross traffic when in reverse. When approaching cross traffic is detected, the system alerts the driver and may apply brakes
  • Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA-JT) with Junction Turning capability: Helps avoid collisions with an oncoming vehicle while turning left at an intersection
  • Forward Parking Distance Warning (PDW-F): Detects certain objects in front of the vehicle, issuing an audible warning when an obstruction is detected. The warning tone chimes faster as the vehicle gets closer to the detected object
  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)21: Helps maintain a set speed and distance from the vehicle detected in front and helps to keep vehicle centered in the lane
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA): Uses speed limit information detected through the front camera or GPS navigation information (when activated) and issues warning if the speed is over the speed limit
  • Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control-Curve (NSCC-C): Leverages the navigation system to help lower the vehicle’s speed proactively before upcoming curves
  • Reverse Parking Collision Avoidance (PCA-R): May help avoid collisions with rear pedestrians or objects detected during reverse parking, potentially automatically assisting with emergency braking if the risk of a collision increases after warning
  • Safe Exit Warning (SEW)22: Provides a warning when a vehicle is approaching from the rear-side while someone is exiting the vehicle
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go: Helps maintain distance from the vehicle ahead and drive at a speed set by the driver, including in certain stop-and-go driving conditions

The following systems are new to Sportage: BCA, BVM, FCA-Cyclist, FCA-JT, LFA, HDA, NSCC-Curve, PCA-R, ROA, and SEW.

ALL-NEW 2023 KIA SPORTAGE SUV SETS OUT TO “MAKE MORE GOOD” IN MULTI-CHANNEL CREATIVE CAMPAIGN

Campaign Shines a Light on the Conservation and Rehabilitation of Endangered Sea Turtles and Beach Pollution

  • Multi-channel campaign includes broadcast, out-of-home-social and digital elements
  • Campaign includes a donation to Sea Turtle, Inc., which will help the organization renovate, expand and modernize their facilities

IRVINE, Calif., April 14, 2022 – Kia America has launched a multi-channel marketing campaign for the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage subcompact SUV, the fifth generation of Kia’s longest-running nameplate that delivers more of everything for today’s savvy, adventurous and eco-conscious consumers. The effort includes broadcast, print, out-of-home and digital components as well as a partnership with Sea Turtle, Inc., a non-profit organization based in South Padre Island, Texas, which is dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitation of the endangered sea turtle population.

The centerpiece of the campaign – a :30-second broadcast spot entitled “Beachcomber” – finds a Sportage X-Pro driver retrieving a drag rake from the SUV’s spacious cargo area before connecting it to the vehicle’s tow hitch and making multiple passes along the sand collecting trash, plastic bottles and other refuse. As the driver looks out at the crashing waves, scores of sea turtles emerge from the surf and begin making their way up the beach to nest in the sand. A voiceover intones, "Make more good, in the all-new Sportage X-Pro.”

“The inspiring message is clear, to live in the world we want to, we all must be a part of making it a better place, and with hybrid and plug-in hybrid capabilities added to the all-new Kia Sportage lineup, we all can make a whole lot of good. With more, you can do more, and turn ambition into action,” said Russell Wager, vice president, marketing, Kia America. “Kia’s partnership with Sea Turtle, Inc., is the latest under Kia’s ‘Accelerate The Good’ charitable initiative and encourages those inclined to make ‘more good’ in the world. We are proud to partner with Sea Turtle, Inc., as they strive to save these majestic creatures, and hope this campaign inspires others to become involved in this important work.”

“We are grateful for Kia’s interest in Sea Turtle, Inc., and the importance of rehabilitating the endangered sea turtle population,” said Wendy Knight, chief executive officer, Sea Turtle, Inc. “Last year Sea Turtle, Inc., rescued more than 5,600 sea turtles. Kia's donation allows us to continue our mission and the awareness this partnership brings to the issue will endure for years to come.”

Significantly larger, more capable, powerful and targeted to be more fuel efficient, the fifth-generation model debuts a number of Sportage firsts including an available dual panoramic curved digital display. Most Sportage trims will now be assembled in the U.S., alongside the award-winning Telluride, Sorento, and K5 at Kia’s manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia.
