Kia named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at 2022 TopGear.com awards

  • Korean firm commended for its ‘remarkable’ year after key launches
  • All-new Niro, fifth-generation Sportage, and flagship EV6 GT contributed to changed perceptions of the Korean brand
  • Kia’s electrified journey to continue in 2023 with the launch of the highly-anticipated EV9

November 30, 2022 – Kia has been named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at the 2022 TopGear.com Awards, finishing the year on a high. This is the second consecutive year that Kia has taken home a win at the TopGear.com awards; last year, the newly launched EV6 won the ‘Crossover of the Year’ category.

Kia has launched several game-changing models in Europe this year – notably the fifth-generation Sportage and all-new Niro, consistently two of Kia’s best-sellers across Europe. Both models offered a major update over their predecessors in several areas, including exterior and interior design, technological advancements, and sustainability credentials.

Jack Rix, Editor of BBC Top Gear Magazine, commented: “Kia’s recent form is remarkable. Despite unprecedented headwinds, the upward trajectory shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, it’s getting braver. The latest Sportage is a superior family crossover in comparison to its closest competitors, the new Niro looks striking, and offers hybrid or electric versions and Kia seems to be landing on its feet when it comes to the transition to fully electric. The EV6 GT offers a 577bhp version with mind-blowing drift mode.”

Jason Jeong, President of Kia Europe, said: “This has been an outstanding year for Kia in terms of new product, brand awareness and sales. Our year-to-date market share across Europe has held strong at 5.1% over the past two months, and that success is due to our incredible electrified line-up. As we expand our electrified offering throughout 2023 and beyond, we hope to inspire more customers to make the switch and support a sustainable future for all.”

David Hilbert, Marketing Director at Kia Europe, accepted the award on behalf of Kia and said: “2022 has been a milestone year in Kia’s history where the brand became synonymous with electrification and set the new gold standard for the future of mobility. The introduction of EV6 GT was a defining moment for us as we extended our electrification leadership into the high-performance arena. Thank you to TopGear.com for naming us ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ - it is welcome recognition of the brand’s achievements so far, and we look forward to a successful 2023.”

The company’s ‘Plan S’ strategy outlines its sustainability targets, including a line-up of 14 fully-electric models by 2027. The next model to launch will be Kia’s highly anticipated EV9, which will be revealed to the European market in 2023.

The Kia EV9 will represent the pinnacle of what is possible with an electric SUV. Developed on the company’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the large electric SUV will usher in a new era of sophisticated, high-tech, sustainable mobility for Kia.

EV6 Named EV of the Year; Telluride Crowned SUV of the Year

IRVINE, CA, November 30, 2022 – The 2022 Kia EV6 and 2023 Kia Telluride have both been recognized by the Hispanic Motor Press as the best vehicles of the year for Hispanic consumers. At the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Hispanic Motor Press named the EV6 as the Best EV of the Year, and crowned the Telluride as the SUV of the Year. The association’s jury panel of over 20 Hispanic automotive journalists, content creators, and industry influencers selected winners based off several key factors important to Hispanic consumers.

The jury panel thoroughly evaluated vehicles on overall design, comfort, safety, economy, handling, performance, functionality, infotainment integration, interior design, environmental impact, driver satisfaction, and price, keeping the Hispanic audience’s preferences foremost in their minds.

“Despite competing in a segment that’s exploding with several new EV options, the Kia EV6 manages to stand out thanks to its bold design, upscale interior, all-electric range, and tremendous value,” said Ricardo Rodriguez-Long, president, Hispanic Motor Press. “The Kia Telluride also continues to reign supreme among SUVs with its luxurious yet boxy exterior design and beautiful cabin space.”

KIA AMERICA DROPS LATEST DIGITAL COLLECTIBLE AS PART OF “LEGENDS OF THE DRIVEWAY” CAMPAIGN FOR THE NEW TELLURIDE

  • Legends of the Driveway NFT collection was developed to raise funds for MobilizeGreen on Giving Tuesday
  • Kia America’s latest NFT collection features artwork inspired by “Legends of the Driveway” ad campaign and a chance to win a trip to the NBA All-Star game

IRVINE, Calif., November 29, 2022 -- Kia America is continuing its foray into web3, which incorporates concepts such as decentralization, blockchain technologies, and token-based economics, with its Legends of the Driveway” NFT collection in light of “Giving Tuesday” on November 29.  The project is designed to help drive fundraising for MobilizeGreen, a national nonprofit that has engaged more than 2,500 young people of color in paid “green” and STEM-focused career-pathway internships in collaboration with government agency partners since 2014.

Powered by the Sweet platform, collectors can begin minting “Legends of the Driveway” starting November 29, for $49.99 per collectible. In addition to the collectible, each token doubles as a sweepstakes entry for a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime weekend trip to the 2023 NBA All-Star game[1]. The collection features a combination of more than a half dozen traits in each of the 2,023 collectibles, designed as a three-dimensional depiction of a house, driveway and hoop perfect for display as a social media banner.

In the creative campaign, Kia reflects on the place many basketball fans and players first fall in love with the game: the driveway. No matter who you are, where you come from, or how old you are, basketball played on driveways, in the schoolyard, or in parks are character and skill building moments so many can relate to and it’s where we can also find the Kia Telluride X-Pro and its legendary performance status.

“Pickup basketball games, whether they take place in a local park, in school yards or a neighbor’s driveway, are where many pro-basketball legends got their start,” said Russell Wager, vice president, marketing, Kia America. “Kia wanted to celebrate these enormously talented players as they are the inspiration for many young people dreaming of making their own way to the pros.”

In the :30 broadcast spot “Legends of the Driveway”, developed by Kia’s creative agency of record, David&Goliath, the creative opens with a series of hoops from an assortment of different homes and driveways. “H-O-R-S-E game winners with their eyes closed,” “dunks over yesterday’s newspaper,” and “free throws from the crack of the concrete” are just some lines inspirationally voiced over scenes of ballers of all ages and fan bases, shooting hoops from their driveways. The spot closes with the taglines “Here’s to the Legends of the Driveway” as we see a young father and his two kids shoot their best shots.

“Young people of color must be at the table, leading the effort to solve environmental challenges in their communities if we are going to create a more just and equitable planet. That starts with early career opportunities, like the ones available through The Virtual Intern. We are grateful to Kia for supporting our students as they begin their paths to leadership," said Leah Allen, President and CEO of MobilizeGreen.

This isn’t Kia’s first foray into web3 and digital collectibles. In February, Kia  launched the Robo Dog Collection on the Sweet platform, which featured the ‘Robo-Dog’ from Kia’s Big Game ad spot as a digital collectible with proceeds going to the Petfinder Foundation to help shelter animals find forever homes. And in July, Kia America launched an ad campaign for the 2023 Kia Soul that included a 30-second spot featuring a QR code, powered by Sweet’s NFT technology enabling viewers to scan and claim a unique Kia Soul NFT. Every viewer who scanned the televised QR code had a chance to pull a rare Kia-branded DASK NFT.

This new collection from Kia America will be minted on the carbon-neutral Polygon blockchain and sold on the Sweet marketplace. Legends of the Driveway collectibles are all housed in the purchaser’s Sweet wallet and any time a collectible is re-sold on the secondary market, an additional 90-percent of the purchase price will benefit the nonprofit MobilizeGreen.

“This third release displays Kia’s desire to continue to build in web3, increasing campaign engagement and building new audiences while giving back to charity,” said Tom Mizzone, Founder and CEO, Sweet. “With each NFT collection, Kia America is leveraging its strengths and partnerships along with well-executed marketing campaigns to drive toward mass adoption of digital collectibles.”

KIA RECEIVES THE MOST MODEL AWARDS IN THE J.D. POWER 2023 U.S. ALG RESIDUAL VALUE AWARDS

  • Telluride, Sportage, K5, Soul and Rio earn J.D. Power awards for having the highest residual value within their respective segments
  • Kia is the most improved mass market brand year over year

IRVINE, Calif., November 21, 2022 – Last week, Kia took home the highest number of model awards – five – in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards. The segment wins by Telluride (Midsize SUVs with 3-row seating), Sportage (Compact SUVs), K5 (Midsize Cars), Soul (Micro SUVs), and Rio (Small Cars), led Kia to the best year-over-year improvement of any mass market brand in the annual evaluation.

“Kia is a brand on the move, with more models predicted to hold their value within their respective segments than any mass market brand,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “Resale value is one of the most important purchase considerations, and from rugged and capable SUVs to sporty sedans, the latest J.D. Power U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards are the latest demonstration of the strength and breadth of Kia’s lineup.”

The U.S. J.D. Power ALG Residual Value Awards are the automotive industry standard in recognizing vehicle models projected to hold the highest percentage of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price following a three-year period of ownership. This value retention is a key variable in the lease cost of a vehicle, underscoring an automaker’s success in the areas of long-term quality and design, as well as the overall desirability of automotive brands and their models.

“This year’s achievement by Kia speaks volumes about how far the brand has come,” said Eric Lyman, vice president of ALG, the division of J.D. Power recognized as the industry benchmark of automotive residual value projections. “The marketplace is acknowledging that Kia has a very strong product lineup in terms of design, quality and residual values. Kia has become a force to be reckoned with.”

KIA AMERICA CONTINUES TO “ACCELERATE THE GOOD” WITH YEAR END FUNDRAISING DRIVE FOR ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL

  • From November 11 through December 31, 2022, Kia will make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for each new Kia vehicle sold and delivered in the U.S.
  • Kia’s minimum monetary donation of $1,000,000 will support St. Jude’s mission to advance cures, and means of prevention, for catastrophic pediatric diseases through research and treatment[1]

IRVINE, Calif., November 17, 2022 – Kia America today announced the fast-growing brand’s 2022 Year-End Sales Event in which it will make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for each new Kia vehicle sold and delivered in the U.S. between November 11 to December 31, 2022. The minimum $1,000,000 donation is Kia’s third act of giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this year, and the latest activity from Kia’s “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiative, which has donated more than $14 million to various causes since 2019. Earlier this year, Kia donated to St. Jude as part of the 10 millionth Kia vehicle sold in the U.S., and again as part of the groundbreaking announcement for a new assembly plant in the state of Georgia.

“Supporting those in need is a core tenet of the Kia brand and we are proud to partner once again with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as the focus of our 2022 Year End Sales Event,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “Coming off record third-quarter sales, we anticipate a strong finish to the year and look forward to Kia making a sizeable and impactful donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help them continue their important, and literally life-saving work. The health of a child is so important and when that is taken away, parents need every resource available to them to help get their child back to living a healthy life. Kia is honored to be a small part of the impact St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital makes on the lives of children nationwide.”

Kia’s Accelerate The Good charitable initiative was established in 2019 and has aided a variety of worthy causes, from establishing scholarships for students in need looking to pursue their dreams of higher education; allowing high schools to re-establish their football programs after pandemic-induced budget cuts; providing PPE to medical facilities nationwide during the pandemic; and helping the homeless population throughout the U.S. In addition, Kia has provided donations to animal welfare organizations including those that help rescue and preserve the endangered sea turtle population; and ones that help shelter animals find their forever homes.

“We are so incredibly grateful for Kia and its dealer network whose generosity continues to help drive the world-class research and care taking place at St. Jude,” said Richard C. Shadyac, Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “It has been wonderful to witness Kia’s expanding charitable impact through the Accelerate the Good program and its commitment to purposeful giving that helps communities around the nation. The financial support from Kia during this year-end event helps St. Jude in its ongoing journey to raise the global survival rate for the six most common forms of childhood cancer by 2030.”

When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was considered incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80% and won't stop until no child dies from cancer.

The 2022 Kia Year-End Event also includes a national ad campaign featuring St. Jude patients and families that will launch in December. The heartwarming TV spot, filmed on the St. Jude campus in Memphis, Tennessee, takes patients on a holiday “joyride” through a sea of lights in a brand-new Kia vehicle.

Kia actively encourages its employees, dealer network and vendor partners to provide additional support. For information on how to donate please visit www.stjude.org.

KIA EV6 NAMED FINALIST FOR 2023 NORTH AMERICAN UTILITY VEHICLE OF THE YEAR AWARD

Kia’s EV6 Poised to Capture One of Auto Industry’s Highest Honors

  • Kia EV6 follows in the footsteps of the NACTOY-winning Telluride SUV
  • Innovative offering signals the beginning of the brand’s transformative ‘Plan S’ electrification strategy

IRVINE, Calif., November 17, 2022 – Marking the Kia brand’s global shift to sustainable mobility, the Kia EV6 has been named one of three finalists for the 2023 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards™.1 Announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this news comes just three years after the brand’s popular Telluride SUV earned the same recognition and then went on to win the prestigious award.

“The EV6 signals a new era for our brand as we venture out to the forefront of electrification, and we are honored that it has been named a finalist for the coveted North American Utility Vehicle of the Year Award,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “This innovative EV crossover leverages its advanced platform to set a high watermark in all areas, including technology, performance and convenience.”

NACTOY jurors vote on finalists after spending months driving dozens of new vehicles throughout the year. To be eligible, vehicles must be all-new or substantially new and must be available at dealerships within a reasonable time from the announcement of the awards, which will take place on January 11. This year, the field of semi-finalists included 13 models in the utility category.

The EV6 is built on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The available state-of-the-art 77.4kWh high-density lithium-ion battery has an EPA-estimated range up to 310-miles2 (Wind RWD and GT-Line RWD models). Furthermore, its 800V multi-charging architecture enables ultra-fast DC charging capability to take the battery from 10 to 80 percent charge in under 18 minutes.3 In terms of power and performance, the EV6 GT-Line can accelerate from zero-to-60 in 4.6 seconds.4

KIA AMERICA UNLEASHES POWER OF SILENCE IN NEW CAMPAIGN FOR MOST POWERFUL KIA EVER – THE EV6 GT

Campaign Features Kris Martin, Hearing-Impaired Professional Racecar Driver

  • Kia’s most powerful production vehicle ever proves that quiet can also be potent
  • 576-HP all-electric Kia EV6 GT can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 161 mph[1]

IRVINE, CA, November 14, 2022 – Kia America recently debuted an all-new creative campaign for the most powerful vehicle in company history, the 576-hp, all-electric Kia EV6 GT. Performance vehicles of the past had to be heard to be believed, and the campaigns promoting these vehicles often featured revving engines and tuned exhaust systems. But this new campaign developed by David&Goliath, Kia’s creative agency of record, communicates the EV6 GT’s new message loud and clear – silence can be powerful.

The :30-second spot, entitled “Silence is Powerful,” features professional driver Kris Martin, an experienced NASCAR and Le Mans driver and a six-time National Kart Champion, who is hearing-impaired. As an advocate, motivational speaker, and inspiration for the deaf community, Martin is the perfect example of someone who has defied the odds. The spot opens with Martin behind the wheel of the all-electric Kia EV6 GT as it races along a professional track, taking corners, accelerating through straightaways, and even drifting. In between these sequences, we see Martin alone, looking to camera and using sign language to say, “I don’t need noise to tell me something is fast,” and “I can feel 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds.” The spot closes with Martin signing “I’ve been deaf since I was born. It taught me one thing…,” leading to the spot’s tagline “Silence is Powerful.”

“The Kia EV6 GT has set a new standard for performance, especially among electrified vehicles,” said Russell Wager, vice president, marketing, Kia America. “Gone are the days of loud engines and noisy acceleration. The all-electric EV6 GT shows that you don’t have to announce yourself to illustrate your power. In this new era of electrification, the EV6 GT has the confidence to be quiet without losing any swagger or bragging rights.”

The EV6 GT raises the threshold of performance for the already potent EV6 lineup, with a dual-motor e-AWD powertrain that sends power to all four wheels. An energy-dense 77.4-kWh Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (80/10/10) battery pack serves a front-mounted 160kW motor, combined with a rear-mounted 270kW motor, to produce a combined power output of 430 kW (576 hp) and 545 lb.-ft. of torque. The EV6 GT can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds to top speed of 161 mph. In independent testing performed by leading third party AMCI Testing, the EV6 GT out-accelerated a 2021 Ferrari Roma and 2021 Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder RWD2.

“We are proud to launch this special campaign in partnership with Kia and professional race car driver Kris Martin,” said Robert Casillas, Executive Creative Director at David Goliath. “As an inspiration for the deaf and race car community, we wanted to create a unique soundscape that made the viewer feel just how powerful silence can be.”

In addition to the broadcast spot, the campaign includes a series of videos called “Sign Language Shorts,” [LINK HERE]. These capture the campaign message in the shortest way possible and will launch only on social media. In typically sound-on platforms like TikTok, the video series embraces the power of silence to make an even louder statement. Other campaign elements include :15 and :06 cutdowns for paid digital, and enthusiast print components in MotorTrend Magazine, launching on November 18th, and Car and Driver Magazine launching on November 29th.

2023 SPORTAGE X-PRO PULLS STRONG FINISH IN REBELLE RALLY

Kia Team pulls off impressive feat despite monumental challenges

  • Verena Mei and Tana White (Team 206) tenaciously crossed the finish line in a modified 2023 Sportage X-Pro, placing 5th in the X-Cross™️ class
  • Mei expertly maneuvered the modified 2023 Sportage X-Pro up and over rocky trails and steep sand dunes
  • White navigated by the numbers using only math to calculate distance

IRVINE, CA, November 4, 2022 – Kia America proudly celebrates a resounding success after its Rebelle Rally team crossed the finish line in a modified 2023 Sportage X-Pro, ultimately conquering the tough-as-nails navigational challenge. Kia driver Verena Mei and navigator Tana White finished in fifth place in the X-Cross™️ class, a herculean accomplishment considering a major setback the team faced when the external odometer – a key navigational tool used in the rally – installed in the Sportage X-Pro stopped working during the first stage of the competition.

Without the external odometer, White was faced with the added challenge of having to do extra math, calculating speed, distance and several other factors in her head while scribbling numbers down onto her paper maps as she tried finding the hidden checkpoints all throughout the rally. Despite the unforeseen challenge, the team finished the rally strong and with their heads held high.

“It was unfortunate our external odometer died, but the silver lining is I’m now a better navigator than when I started. Throughout the rally, I had to rely more on triangulating features shown on the map to determine our precise location,” said White, team navigator. “I had to multiply the Sportage’s odometer reading to figure out the distance driven, so I was constantly doing math all the way to the finish line.”

After some troubleshooting, the team was able to fix the external odometer for the last day of the competition, resulting in a fun day ripping through the dunes. At one point, they were among the stage leaders.

“The Sportage X-Pro was a blast to drive – like a rally car – nimble through rocky terrain, steep hills, and zipping up and down sand dunes. Throughout the training and rigors of the rally, I had full confidence that it could take on just about anything,” said Mei, a professional rally and drift racer. “The BFGoodrich tires also held up incredibly well through sharp rocks. At one point we were certain we popped a tire, but those tires proved trusty and increased my confidence as a driver.”

Mei and White piloted the modified 2023 Sportage X-Pro across the Nevada and California deserts, covering over 1,600 miles before finishing in the vast sand dunes in Glamis, CA.

“This is the ultimate embodiment of ‘Movement that Inspires,’” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “Despite the hardship Verena and Tana faced, they kept a positive attitude and pulled off a truly impressive feat that is utterly admirable. The entire organization will be singing their praises for a long time to come.”

This year marks the third year Kia finished the treacherous rally. In 2021, two modified 2022 Sorento PHEVs earned podium spots in the X-Cross™️ class. Mei and White finished second while Kia’s other team, Alyssa Roenigk and Sabrina Howells, came in third place. The previous year, Roenigk and Howells competed in a modified 2020 Telluride and came in a close second place in the X-Cross™️ class.

"The 2022 Electrify Expo events have provided a forum for the top companies and executives in electrification to come together to share insights and discuss how the transition to all-electrified vehicles will be made as seamlessly as possible,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “Kia was able to share our point-of-view as one of the top selling manufacturers of EV vehicles and we certainly learned from the perspectives of others. We are confident that we are charting the best path forward and helping to shape the future of the automotive industry.”

A wide variety of topics are set for discussion and include legislation affecting the EV industry, range anxiety, battery materials and sustainability, charging infrastructure, the future of autonomous driving applications and supply chain barriers. A full list of sessions and presenters can be found by visiting www.electrifyexpo.com.

For 2022, Electrify Expo expanded its industry-facing events, and education programs, with a full day of programming, industry leadership, and breakout sessions for the Auto and Micromobility categories. The series will wrap in Austin at Circuit of the Americas.
