Hyundai Motor Group Increases US Investment as the Group Targets Innovation and Mobility Leadership

  • HMG to invest more than USD 10 billion in US by 2025 to lead future mobility solutions
  • Investment to support HMG global position as first mover in innovation and next-generation mobility solutions; to contribute to U.S. manufacturing
  • HMG on May 20 announced a USD 5.54 billion new EV & battery manufacturing facilities in Georgia, to lead electrification era in the US
  • HMG investment will support development of key future businesses, including robotics, AI technologies, advanced air mobility and autonomous driving capability

SEOUL, May 23, 2022 – Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is increasing its investment to more than USD 10 billion by 2025 to further its goal to lead sustainable and smart mobility solutions in the U.S.

The Group’s investment plans are designed to accelerate innovation and mobility electrification. The move supports carbon neutrality goals with new technologies and will contribute to manufacturing in the U.S.

"We have come a long way and become very successful in a short period of time, but we are also preparing for our future," said Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, following his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in Seoul on May 22nd. “The Group will strengthen our partnership with U.S. public and private entities to offer innovative products and mobility solutions to our valued customers in the U.S. while supporting global carbon neutrality efforts,” added Chung.

This follows the announcement last week in which Hyundai Motor Group disclosed a USD 5.54 billion plan to establish its first dedicated U.S. EV and battery manufacturing facilities in the State of Georgia to build a wide range of innovative electric vehicles for its U.S. customers.

The new facility, located on a dedicated 2,923-acre site in Bryan County, Georgia, will break ground in early 2023 and is expected to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025 with an annual capacity of 300,000 units. The new facility will help HMG lead the U.S. auto market’s EV transition and the Group’s roadmap to be one of top three EV providers in the U.S. by 2026, helping to grow U.S. innovation and manufacturing.

The new plant will implement many of HMG’s advanced intelligent manufacturing technologies, boasting a highly connected, automated, and flexible manufacturing system, which organically connects all elements of the EV ecosystem to realize customer value. As part of the Group’s commitment to sustainability, the plant will mainly rely on renewable energy sources to power the facility and use emission-reduction technologies to meet the RE100 requirements.

As one of the global leaders in innovation, HMG has allocated a series of additional expenditure to foster key future businesses such as robotics, advanced air mobility (AAM), autonomous driving, and artificial intelligence (AI). The investment will enable HMG to offer diverse mobility products and services with greater safety and convenience.

Robotics is an essential part of the Group’s transformation into a smart mobility solutions provider. Having acquired Boston Dynamics, an innovator in the field, HMG has sharpened its focus on advancing robotics to enhance people’s lives through a range of mobility solutions. The Group is committed to the growth of Boston Dynamics by expediting mass production of future products, enhancing product lineup and strengthening competitiveness.

HMG is also pioneering driverless technologies and responding to rapid paradigm shift in the automotive industry through Motional, a venture established in Boston jointly with the leading U.S. mobility technology firm Aptiv in 2020. Motional is currently testing its robotaxi service on U.S public roads with an aim to commence commercial service in 2023. The Group will actively support Motional to make the driverless technology more safe, reliable, and accessible to customers in the U.S. and in other parts of the world. HMG will cooperate with U.S. partners in areas to accelerate the efforts to bring driverless technology into reality.

To expand the dimension of mobility solutions, HMG is also developing the technologies and infrastructure in the advanced air mobility (AAM). The Group launched Washington D.C. based Supernal last year to strengthen its AAM capabilities. Supernal is working to integrate AAM into existing transit networks and shape a seamless intermodal passenger experience. The vision is for passengers to use a single app – like current rideshare platforms – to plan their journey, which could include taking a car or rail from home to an AAM "vertiport," riding an eVTOL across town, and then using an e-scooter for the last mile. With the target of beginning commercial service in 2028, Supernal is collaborating with stakeholders to explore physical and digital infrastructure concepts and secure the right ecosystem for the AAM industry to take off.

In order to advance all future businesses and strengthen competitiveness in diverse areas within the Group, HMG plans to increase investment into AI technologies while it also actively pursues new business opportunities with local partners to broaden business infrastructure, achieve carbon neutrality, and others.

In addition to the future business enhancement, HMG will maintain consistent levels of investment in R&D to continue offering exciting and innovative vehicles from its Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands, as well as into expanding and upgrading existing facilities in the U.S.

KIA SELLS 10 MILLIONTH VEHICLE IN THE UNITED STATES

Kia is Among the Fastest OEMs to Reach the 10 Million Mark in America

IRVINE, Calif., May 23, 2022 – Continuing its rapid expansion, this month Kia America celebrates the sale of the 10 millionth Kia vehicle in the U.S. Since start of sales in 1993, Kia’s growth is one of the auto industry’s greatest success stories and the result of delivering world-class quality, design and technology in every rugged and capable SUV, sporty sedan, and electric vehicle the company offers. The 10 millionth vehicle – a Runway Red all-electric EV6 purchased by Monti Charoenphong at Car Pros Kia Moreno Valley in Moreno Valley, California – underlines Kia’s commitment to sustainable mobility leadership going forward.

As part of Kia’s “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiatives, Kia will, in association with Ms. Charoenphong, commemorate the 10 millionth Kia sold milestone through multiple acts of giving including $10,000 donations to non-profit organizations including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, Alzheimer’s Association, and Freedom Service Dogs of America.  In addition, Kia will gift her family’s EV6 and provide complementary access to a future NBA and Kia Forum event as part of the company’s previously announced partnerships.

“Selling 10 million vehicles is a significant achievement and we at Kia are proud not only how far we’ve come, but also what the future has in store as we continue our push for sustainable mobility leadership,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia North America and Kia America. “To thank our customers for their support, Kia wants to give back in meaningful ways by helping those in need. We hope the positive impact of these donations will resonate for years to come.”

“We have been a ‘Kia Family’ for many years, but once we saw the EV6, there was no question this would be our next car,” said new owner Monti Charoenphong. “The day we took delivery was already very exciting, but to learn that we were also Kia’s 10 millionth customer in the U.S. was unbelievable and confirmed our love of this company and to electrified driving.”

Since Kia’s arrival in the U.S. market, the brand has grown from offering just two models to a wide range of world-class vehicles designed to meet the needs of practically every driver on the road. Beginning with the all-electric EV6, Kia’s Plan S strategy will transform the company into a leader in sustainable mobility with plans for a fully-electrified lineup in the U.S. by 2040.

Kia to establish its first electric PBV plant in Korea, as it accelerates electrified mobility

  • Kia will establish its first manufacturing facility dedicated to producing electric Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs)
  • Kia’s foray into the PBV sector is a pivotal step outlined in the company’s Plan S strategy, with the ultimate aim to become a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions
  • Construction of new facility to begin in the first half of 2023; production to start in the second half of 2025
  • The facility will feature the company’s pioneering ‘E-FOREST’ smart manufacturing ecosystem, driven by data, connectivity, robotics technologies

(SEOUL) May 18, 2022 – Kia Corporation, which is in the midst of its transition into a sustainable mobility provider, has announced today that it will establish an all-new, high-tech smart manufacturing facility dedicated to producing electric Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs).

The intelligent new production hub for PBVs will be located within Kia’s existing Hwaseong manufacturing site in Korea. The company plans to begin construction in the first half of 2023, with the aim to commence commercial production in the second half of 2025.

The plant will initially be able to build 100,000 PBVs a year with the capacity to increase production to 150,000 units annually in line with the growth of PBV market.

“This dedicated PBV facility is one of the major pillars of our Plan S strategy as Kia seeks to claim the top position in the global PBV market,” said Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation. “We will initially explore new markets with derivative PBV models, then gradually expand our presence in global markets with dedicated PBV models featuring autonomous driving technologies.”

Kia is one of the first global organizations to make headway into the PBV market, and as part of its Plan S roadmap, the brand aims to become a PBV leader by 2030. When combined with autonomous driving technology, PBVs are expected to offer a revolutionary new means of transportation that further enrich society and communities around the globe.

The new PBV plant will feature state-of-the-art automation processes combined with advanced technologies that reduce carbon emissions during the production processes. The site is also equipped with clean painting and energy-saving facilities to minimize environmental impacts further.

Smart manufacturing with E-FOREST

E-FOREST is the brand name for Kia’s new smart factory ecosystem that pursues innovation in manufacturing systems by organically connecting everything to realize customer value. The initial ‘E’ signifies progress in the overall mobility industry in terms of efficiency and economics. It also represents the ambition to achieve innovation for everyone by connecting elements such as artificial intelligence, robot technology, and ICT to provide its customers with the very best products. The ‘Forest’ part of the nomenclature refers to an ecosystem that harmonizes all these elements to function as one.

Kia’s future

When operation begins in the second half of 2025, the new PBV facility will build a mid-sized PBV, Kia’s first dedicated PBV model. Kia’s first dedicated PBV will be based on Kia’s ‘eS’ skateboard platform, explicitly developed for PBVs. The new platform can flexibly accommodate various PBV model sizes in response to diverse customer demands. Following the launch of the model codenamed SW, Kia will diversify into unmanned micro-sized PBVs, general logistics, fresh food, multi-seat shuttles and large PBVs that can be used as mobile offices or shops.

Each of Kia’s innovative PBVs will be equipped with an OTA (Over the Air) functionality that can wirelessly update the vehicle’s software in real-time, which will have benefits for the total cost of ownership and ease of use.

Kia continues to introduce multiple forward-thinking initiatives to evoke the sustainable mobility shift, including: The Ocean Cleanup project; Blue Carbon project; Joining the Climate Group’s RE100; and the launch of the Niro Plus, a derivative PBV as an full electric taxi in Korea.

Hyundai Motor Group (the Group), including Kia, Hyundai Motor Company, and Genesis as its affiliates, aims to sell 3.23 million EVs a year globally by 2030, aiming for 12 percent of the global electric vehicle market. The Group is set to be a game-changer in the global electric vehicle market with overwhelming performance and value beyond the competition. In the first quarter of 2022, the Group's sales of electric vehicles stood at 76,801 units, rising by 73 percent from the same period last year.

KIA EV6 NAMED U.S. NEWS 2022 ‘BEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE’

IRVINE, Calif., May 11, 2022 — The 2022 Kia EV6 has been named to the list of “Best Hybrid and Electric Cars” by U.S. News & World Report. The EV6 beat out dozens of competitors to earn the designation of Best Electric Vehicle in this year’s awards.

“The EV6 has been lauded as a success since its launch earlier this year and represents an important first step toward Kia’s transformative ‘Plan S’ electrification strategy that will deliver 11 all-new electrified models across the world by 2026,” said Steven Center, COO and EVP, Kia America. “We are honored to receive this recognition from U.S. News, which reinforces the brand’s future direction and leadership in the space.”

To determine the winner in each category, U.S. News analyzed each vehicle’s overall score, starting price, Level 2 charging rate, and EPA fuel economy and range estimates for the 82 hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and electric vehicles under consideration. The winners had the best combination of quality, value, and efficiency in their segment.

“We’ve seen a lot of growth in the electric SUV segment this year, and the all-new Kia EV6 is a top choice with a comfortable and attractive interior, as well as a comprehensive suite of active safety features,” said Jim Sharifi, managing editor of U.S. News Best Cars. “Perhaps the biggest selling point, however, is the EV6’s exceptional driving range of up to 310 miles.”

The EV6 continues to rise in popularity, with deliveries rising 49-percent in its second month in showrooms. More than 3,100 of the all-electric EV6 models were sold in March, contributing to Kia’s electrified models securing best-ever monthly and quarterly performances.

Top Honors for Peter Schreyer and Kia EV6 at the 2022 Autocar Awards

  • HMG’s Executive Design Advisor, Peter Schreyer, given Autocar’s Lifetime Achievement award
  • Kia EV6, the first dedicated electric vehicle, named ‘Best Electric Car’
  • Autocar Awards success comes off the back of other major awards victories including 2022 European Car of the Year win for Kia EV6

(SEOUL) May 11, 2022 – Peter Schreyer and the Kia EV6 have picked up top honors in the 2022 Autocar Awards, in a ceremony held at the UK’s Silverstone Circuit on Tuesday 10 May.

The Kia EV6 was named the ‘Best Electric Car’ by Autocar, while Peter Schreyer received the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award for his contribution to automotive design throughout his career.

Kia EV6 named ‘Best Electric Car’

No stranger to awards since its launch in late 2021, the EV6 has been named ‘Best Electric Car’ in 2022 by the world’s oldest car magazine.

Mark Tisshaw, Editor for Autocar, comments: “With the EV6, Kia has eclipsed its natural rivals, and the car goes further than most rivals to make everyday motoring feel special. Aside from being an excellent electric car in its own right, the EV6 also represents Kia’s coming of age. Over the past 30 years, the Korean brand has gradually worked its way up to become the technology and market leader that it is today. The fact that a ‘GT’ version of the EV6 is coming next year suggests Kia’s end goal is loftier still.”

Kia’s first dedicated electric car, the EV6 is based on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Its practical interior, cutting-edge design, and high-tech features are matched by its extraordinary EV capabilities. It offers up to 328 miles of range from a single charge and offers 800V ultra-fast charging as standard, enabling it to recharge from 10-to-80 per cent in just 18 minutes from a 350kW charger.

The EV6 is one of 14 EVs that Kia plans to launch globally by 2027 as the company positions itself as a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

Lifetime Achievement for Peter Schreyer

Peter Schreyer received Autocar’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award for an incredible career spanning decades.

Now Executive Design Advisor and brand ambassador at Hyundai Motor Group, Peter Schreyer headed Kia’s design-led approach to product development for more than a decade. His efforts and expertise have had a transformative on the brand’s success globally in recent years.

Mark Tisshaw comments: “Few people have the determination and ability to change the course of a massive car conglomerate for the better. But Peter Schreyer did just this in 2006 when he accepted the position as Kia’s chief design officer. To say Schreyer has succeeded in his mission is quite an understatement: Kia’s global sales rocketed from 1.6 million to 3 million between 2009 and 2016, and much of that upward thrust was attributed to the rapidly elevated design appeal of Schreyer-era models. His portfolio represents the gold standard of automotive design success and he truly deserves Autocar’s 2022 ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award.”

Commenting on his award, designer Peter Schreyer said: "It is an honor to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award. I have been fortunate to have been involved in many projects over my 40+ year design career and privileged to work with some very talented teams to develop vehicles that have resonated with customers the world over.”

“In 2006, I was given the opportunity to join Kia and the freedom to conceive a desirable design brand. It was a truly enriching moment in my career. Thanks to visionary leadership of the Group and the trust they placed in me, we led the transformation of the Hyundai Motor Group and created a legacy the company can build on for the future. Since then, I have been involved in many successful programs for the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, and I look forward to continuing my work for the Group,” he added.

Born in 1953 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany, Schreyer has enjoyed an illustrious career as an automotive designer. He received his professional education at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and at the renowned Royal College of Art in London, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007.

In 2006, Schreyer was appointed Chief Design Officer at Kia. During his tenure, he proved instrumental in creating a fresh new design direction for the brand, including the introduction of the distinctive ‘tiger nose’ grille. His major design highlights at Kia include the 3rd and 4th -generation Sportage, K5, Stinger, Telluride and several innovative and critically acclaimed concept cars, such as the 2007 Kia Kee and 2010 Kia Pop.

Named President and Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group in 2013, Schreyer’s unique approach to design has transformed Kia and Hyundai into highly desirable and recognizable brands. In February 2022, Schreyer was named Executive Design Advisor and brand ambassador for the Hyundai Motor Group.

Before joining Kia, he was responsible for the design of pioneering models including the Audi A2, Audi TT, Volkswagen New Beetle and Volkswagen Golf IV at Audi and the Volkswagen Group.

ALL-NEW 2023 SPORTAGE X-PRO SET TO CONQUER REBELLE RALLY THIS FALL

  • Kia America returns to the all-women off-road navigational desert challenge for a third year in a row
  • The All-New 2023 Sportage X-Pro will compete in the rally’s X-Cross class

IRVINE, CA, May 10, 2022 – Kia America is geared up and ready to tackle Rebelle Rally 2022, the iconic all-women off-road rally.  Kia will campaign for the third year in a row, this time with the all-new 2023 Sportage X-Pro. The newest generation of Kia’s longest-running nameplate will compete in the X-Cross class.

“As a long-standing member of Kia’s vehicle lineup and with its off-road ready features, the Sportage X-Pro is well equipped to battle the rugged terrain and challenging off-road conditions of the Rebelle Rally,” said Steve Center, COO & EVP, Kia America. “We are excited to root for this year’s team who will showcase how the all-new Sportage doesn’t just look ready for an off-road adventure – it is ready.”

In 2021, two 2022 Sorento PHEVs earned podium spots in the X-Cross class, as driver Verena Mei and navigator Tana White finished second overall and Kia’s returning team, Alyssa Roenigk and Sabrina Howells, came in third place overall. The previous year, Roenigk and Howells piloted a 2020 Telluride to achieve a close second place in the X-Cross class.

“We’re excited to welcome Kia back to the Rebelle Rally with the Sportage X-Pro,” said Emily Miller, founder of the Rebelle Rally. “With the unpredictable and challenging nature of the course, we look forward to seeing how the Sportage X-Pro can successfully handle this year’s topography.”

The Sportage X-Pro will be minimally modified, bolstered by standard off-road hardware to match and is powered by a 2.5-liter I-4 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, achieving 187 horsepower. To navigate the grueling 10-day long course, the Sportage X-Pro is equipped with B.F. Goodrich all-terrain tires and 17-inch wheels for a minimum 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and an active on-demand all-wheel drive system which actively distributes power between the front and rear wheels depending on road and driving conditions.

Details about this year’s team, vehicle builds and photos will be revealed closer to the start of the Rebelle Rally, which begins on October 6 and ends on October 15.

NEW 2023 KIA SOUL DEBUTS

Segment-busting Urban Runabout Sees Significant Enhancements for the New Model Year

  • Notable design enhancements front and rear set 2023 Soul apart
  • Bold and lively new colors let the fun shine through
  • Simplified lineup includes well-equipped LX, S, EX, GT-Line variants
  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist1 - Pedestrian one of many new standard tech-focused features

IRVINE, Calif., May 4, 2022 – The new 2023 Kia Soul, arriving later this summer, features refreshed design elements inside and out, a simplified lineup, new smile-inducing colors, and two option packages brimming with technology and convenience. Soul redefined the boxy small-car segment when it was first launched in 2009 and has evolved steadily since, appealing to customers across generations with its edgy good looks, practicality, and efficiency. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date.

“The Soul defined a whole new segment of small cars when it first entered the Kia lineup and it continues into the 2023 model year with as much fun, practicality and style as ever,” said Steve Center, COO & EVP, Kia America. “The basic form remains, which is what more than 75,000 happy Soul owners loved so much about the funky runabout last year, representing a nearly 5 percent increase over sales in 2020. The new 2023 Soul is set to continue that trend with its refreshed design inside and out, advanced technology and feature-packed trims.”

Soul has always been set apart by its bold yet functional design and the 2023 model year continues that tradition with an all-new front fascia. The new grill is set off with available LED headlights and redesigned fog lights. New Daytime Running Lamps and turn signals round out the front-end redesign. New available 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels and a redesigned rear fascia and taillights complete the exterior enhancements. A multitude of solid and two-tone exterior paint schemes remain and are complemented by new two-tone paint programs: Clear White with Fusion Black roof, and Surf Blue with a Fusion Black roof.

Inside, what worked best remains and what has changed has made a good thing better. Logically placed switchgear falls readily to-hand while the 10.25-inch (standard on all but LX trim) touchscreen with navigation is a welcome addition to the tech-forward cabin.

Simplifying the lineup for 2023, the Soul is offered in LX, S, EX, GT-Line, GT-Line Tech trimlines, each featuring a long list of standard and available equipment. The X-Line and Turbo have been discontinued, although many of the features are found in the new variants. The new LX Technology Package includes Blind Spot Collision Avoidance (BCA), Rear Cross Collision Avoidance (RCCA), and 16-inch alloy wheels; neatly bundling sought-after features in an already well-equipped offer.

The GT-Line Technology Package ups the ante with a wide range of sought-after features and driver-assist systems. A Harman/Kardon premium audio is accessed through the 10.25-inch color touchscreen and features an external amplifier, subwoofer, and door-mounted tweeters. Multi-colored LED speaker lights pulse in time with the tunes and the heated front seats offer a warm embrace during cold-weather drives.  The GT-Line Technology Package also includes:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning capability (radar + camera type)2
  • Highway Drive Assist3
  • Navigation based Smart Cruise Control
  • Electronic Parking Brake
  • Power driver seat
  • High-gloss interior trim
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Cargo Cover
  • Dual-level cargo floor

Highlighting Kia America’s commitment to safety and security, a number of previously optional features are now standard across all trims, including:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist-Pedestrian (FCA-Ped; camera type)4
  • Lane Keeping Assist + Lane Following Assist5
  • Driver Attention Warning6
  • Lane Departure Warning7
  • High Beam Assist
  • Rear Occupant Alert (door logic)

For 2023, Soul is powered by a single powertrain. The efficient 2.0-liter inline four cylinder produces 147-horsepower at 6,200 rpm and lays down 132 lb.-ft- of torque at 4,500 rpm through the front wheels. Kia’s Intelligent Variable Transmission is standard across all variants.

KIA AMERICA CONTINUES “SHIFT” TO STRONG ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE SALES

IRVINE, Calif., May 2, 2022 – Kia America today announced April sales of 59,063 units, marking the brand’s best-ever April sales total for EV models and pushing the total number of Kia vehicles sold in the U.S. past the 10 million mark. In addition, the Sportage SUV, now in its 5th generation as the brand’s longest running nameplate, achieved its best-ever April sales total with 11,380 units sold.

Overall electrified models recorded fourth consecutive same-month sales record, with EV sales reaching 14th consecutive same-month sales record and surpassing the April 2021 mark by over 480-percent.

Kia America also registered its 10 millionth sale in the US since deliveries to buyers began in 1993. Additional details on this historic achievement will follow later this month.

“Kia’s proud history and exciting future are both on display this month as we mark the 10 millionth Kia vehicle sold in the U.S. at the same time that we are experiencing an increase in sales of our electrified vehicles - all in spite of the challenges facing the industry overall.” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “Our enduring success with electrified models, coupled with a strong start of sales for the all-new 5th generation Sportage SUV, solidifies Kia’s leadership position in two of the most popular and important segments in today’s market.”

In addition to sales, April saw several significant announcements coming from the brand, including:

  • Debut of the refreshed Telluride SUV and all-new hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric Niro models at the New York International Auto Show
  • Kia secured the naming rights and became official automotive partner of the Kia Forum, the only arena-sized venue in the U.S. dedicated to music and entertainment.
  • The Kia Carnival MPV was named “Family Vehicle of the Year” by AutoGuide. Carnival MPV was recognized as the top family vehicle due to its impressive interior capacity, extensive safety features, and modern design
