Kia commits to advancing human wellbeing and environmental sustainability at Milan Design Week

  • Kia presents bold ‘Opposites United’ design exhibition, which offers new approach to delivering sustainability solutions, at  Milan Design Week
  • Kia to prioritize design that overcomes divergence of human everyday needs  and  essential sustainability requirements
  • New Kia EV9 exemplifies new approach and utilizes a range of innovative sustainable materials, to deliver a premium look and feel, setting new standards for sustainable mobility
  • Brand’s first global exhibition nominated for ‘Fuorisalone Award’ which recognizes the ‘best’ of the Milan Design Week

(Milan) April 21, 2023 – Kia is presenting a bold design approach in an exhibition titled ‘Opposites United’ at Milan Design Week. The multi-media event illustrates how the company will create new sustainable mobility solutions through harmonizing the apparent opposing concepts of human mobility requirements and environmental impact.  The exhibition is nominated for the prestigious ‘Fuorisalone Award’, which recognizes the most memorable events of the Milan Design Week.

The exhibition serves not only as a creative platform to externally communicate Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy in an innovative and interactive way, but also acts as a lens to inwardly focus the sustainable mobility company’s priorities as it turns its attention to further implementing its design philosophy in future products.

"Kia's design philosophy represents far more than just the way our cars look,” said Ho Sung Song, Kia President and CEO. “It reflects our commitment to compatibly advance two crucial areas which have come to be at odds with one another: human mobility needs and environmental sustainability.”

“With the 'Opposites United' design philosophy, Kia aims to demonstrate its innovative approach that enriches customers’ experiences while leaving a positive legacy for future generations,” Song added.

Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center, commented: "Kia is crafting transformational products that are desirable and balance the contrasts between environmental responsibilities and modern life. Through this approach, we aim to create authentic and inspiring experiences for our customers, which enable them to foster greater societal connections and pursue a better quality of life.”

Kia has incorporated this design philosophy into its new flagship model, the Kia EV9, which utilizes a range of innovative sustainable materials and processes to deliver a premium look and feel while reducing the model’s impact on the environment.

A pioneering milestone for Kia, the EV9 is the first model to embrace the brand’s three-step Design Sustainability Strategy, initiated to phase out the use of leather, apply ten ‘must-have’ sustainable items to all new Kia models, and continuously increase the use of bio-based materials such as corn, sugar cane, and natural oils.

Subsequent products will seek to build on this platform, as Kia aims to fulfil its commitment to increasing the proportion of recycled plastics it uses to 20 per cent by 2030 and achieving full carbon neutrality throughout the company’s value chain by 2045.

The ‘Opposites United’ exhibition has been nominated for the ‘Fuorisalone Award’. Presented annually and distinguished by public vote, this award recognizes and champions the most memorable installations showcased in Milan.

‘Opposites United’ at Milan Design Week 2023

Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy is based on five key design pillars, each of which was illustrated in a dedicated space as part of the Milan exhibition: Bold for Nature; Joy for Reason; Power to Progress; Technology for Life; and Tension for Serenity.

Bold for Nature

Bold for Nature is based on interaction with and informed by the details, shapes and proportions found in both the natural and human worlds. It is about both embracing nature and making a positive mark on the world. This design pillar creates organic yet technical structures and finishes for vehicle interiors. Exterior designs are characterized by a combination of clear and simple lines with bold, ever-changing surfaces.

The Bold for Nature space shows the promise of harmonizing in front of large nature representations, acquiring teachings and finding fundamental motifs therein. This work contains a message for human beings to pursue bold beauty with respect for all things in nature. Speakers include design critic Alice Rawsthorn and landscape architect Bas Smets, with an evening performance by electronic music producer Pantha du Prince.

Joy for Reason

Joy for Reason focuses on experiences that spark joy, which will influence the feel and ambience of Kia’s future vehicles. It stands for playful products, touching experiences, and new interactions. Future designs embracing Joy for Reason will fuse the emotional with the rational, creating vehicles that influence their passengers’ moods by relaxing and inspiring. It will also influence the adoption of new organic materials and more daring colors, expressing a sense of youth and playfulness.

The Joy for Reason space depicts the promise of Kia Design to turn even mundane experiences into unexpected joyful memories. Speakers include writer Pr. Helen Hester, and producer, actor, and editor Carlo Antonelli, with a classical evening performance by the quartet of La Scala.

Tension for Serenity

Tension for Serenity evokes the tension between opposing forces and creative contrasts. It embraces the equilibrium that comes from two opposing forces and encompasses bringing order out of chaos and purpose to the future. Applied to automotive design, Tension for Serenity delivers striking design concepts that use sharp, highly technical details to create surface tension and realize a harmonized, future-oriented vision.

The Tension for Serenity space brings tranquility through eloquence and harmony at all boundaries where there were conflicts or opposite elements. Speakers include NTS Radio Founder, Femi Adeyemi, and composer and sound designer Nicolas Becker, with an evening performance by singer-songwriter Alewya.

Technology for Life

Technology for Life embraces new technologies and innovations to foster positive interactions between humans and machines. It focuses less on devices themselves and more on the way humans engage with them, hinting at future Kia products that will adopt a next-generation in-car user experience (UX). This will be achieved through design innovation and advancements in lighting, feel, and in-car connectivity – all with the goal of helping customers engage with their cars.

The Technology for Life space contains content based on technology and know-how accumulated by Kia Design. It shows Kia’s commitment to becoming a partner that can help customers make important memories in life. Speakers include designer Bethan Laura Wood and design curator Marco Sammicheli. In addition, evening performances feature electronic music by Talpha.

Power to Progress

Finally, Power to Progress stands for the drive to move forward, onward, and upward. In the context of design, this means building on the brand’s current strengths. By drawing on and developing the skills and expertise learned throughout Kia’s recent design-led transformation, the designs and layouts of the brand’s future products will continue to evolve. Future designs will draw on experience and creativity to invent and innovate.

The Power to Progress area illustrates how human beings can pursue happiness by harmonizing their goals with nature and experiences. Speakers include curator Andrea Lissoni and philosopher Emanuele Coccia. Evening performances feature musician, sound designer, and drummer Missing Ear; pop music producer Hudson Mohwake, and electronic music DJ Afrodeutsche.

Besides the guiding principle of the ‘Opposites United’ philosophy, Kia’s future design will also embrace the company’s new Sustainable Design Strategy. This three-step initiative outlines ways to improve the sustainability of the materials used in building its cars:

Action 1 stands for ‘Leather free,’ meaning Kia will completely phase out the use of animal-sourced leather in all its future products – starting with the EV9. Replacing leather and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) with recycled materials will reduce the use of toxic chemicals as well as the amount of carbon emitted during the production process.

Action 2 denotes ‘Ten must-have sustainable items.’ This step defines a baseline of ten sustainable materials – recycled, organic, or biodegradable – which will be applied to all Kia models in the future.

Action 3 stands for ‘Bio fabrication,’ the ambitious goal of developing new, bio-based materials for use in cars. Successful tests have already been carried out with mycelium, which is found in the root structure of mushrooms. To accomplish this, Kia is partnering with startups and innovators and investing in research and development to grow new materials for its cars.

Kia has a long history of integrating sustainable materials into its products, starting with the use of bioplastic and sugar cane bio-fiber through the second-generation ‘Soul EV’ in 2014. Now, Kia’s environmentally friendly materials range from eco-processed leather and vegan alternatives to recycled plastic waste, and even recycled ghost nets which were retrieved from the ocean.

  • Rover development reflects the Group’s Metamobility vision of expanding human reach with mobility solutions, moving beyond land, sea and air mobility

SEOUL, April 20, 2023 – Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) today announced that it has started building an initial development model1 of a lunar exploration mobility rover in tandem with aerospace partners.

In July 2022, the Group signed a joint multilateral research agreement with six Korean research institutes in the aerospace sector to run and support a consultative body to develop a mobility solution for lunar surface exploration.

The consultative body includes Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH).

Following discussions with the various stakeholders, the Group decided the direction for the initial lunar exploration mobility development model. The Group expects to complete the initial test unit as soon as the second half of 2024 and aims to create a model that has launch capability in 2027.

“Hyundai Motor Group has consistently stated its goal is to contribute to expanding human reach and the scope of human mobility experiences,” said Yong Wha Kim, Executive Vice President, and Head of R&D Planning & Coordination Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia. “The creation of the lunar exploration mobility development model not only reflects this goal, but also shows our ambition to achieve tangible results in the face of significant challenges. Kia Celebrates ‘Opposites United’ Design Philosophy at 2023 Milan Design Week

  • Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy to be showcased in global design exhibition
  • Event takes place from 17th to 23rd April at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, Italy
  • Key Kia designers including Karim Habib to present the brand’s design vision
  • Design approach entails tackling the mobility challenges of today with a vision for tomorrow

(Milan/Seoul) April 17, 2023 – Kia is presenting its brand design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’ at the 2023 Milan Design Week. The event will see the philosophy, which involves combining contrasting qualities and finding synergies between opposing concepts, illustrated in a series of art pieces on display from April 17-23 at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, Italy.

The exhibition's theme, ‘Opposites United,’ reflects Kia's design philosophy, which takes inspiration from the contrasts found in nature and humanity. Immersive media art installations will be displayed across seven exhibition halls, inviting visitors to experience Kia's design vision for a new era of sustainable mobility through video, sound, and sculpture.

The art exhibition, which premiered at the 2021 Gwangju Design Biennale in Korea to critical acclaim, will also feature an event space with a stage and forum for talks and keynotes. Here, top design executives - Karim Habib, Head of Kia Global Design Center; Teckkoun Kim, Head of Kia Next Design Group; Jochen Paesen, Head of Kia Next Design Interior Group; and Gregory Guillaume, Head of Kia Europe Design Center - will elaborate on the ‘Opposites United’ installation and discuss Kia´s design vision.

“We hope that this exhibition will convey the sincerity of Kia Design, which seeks to communicate our essential design values and commitments to our customers in an innovative manner,” said Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center.

Five key design pillars

‘Opposites United’ is based on five key design pillars, each of which will be illustrated in a dedicated space as part of the exhibition: Bold for Nature, Joy for Reason, Power to Progress, Technology for Life, and Tension for Serenity.

Arriving visitors will be greeted at an entrance space showing the concept behind the Kia design philosophy exhibition. Attendees can intuitively experience the concept of ‘Opposites United’ through the archiving section, where they can briefly see the preparation process of the exhibition in order to build anticipation for the exhibition itself. The next stop is the Opposites Lobby, a space containing a message that allows visitors who are new to Kia’s design philosophy to experience the basic concept of ‘Opposites United’ more intuitively.

Following the Opposites Lobby are five unique spaces, each embodying one of the five key design principles of ‘Opposites United’. In addition, throughout the course of the week, each day will be dedicated to one of the five key design principles.

Day 1: Bold for Nature

Bold for Nature is based on interaction with and informed by the details, shapes and proportions found in both the natural and human worlds. It is about both embracing nature and making a mark on the world. This design pillar creates organic yet technical structures and finishes for vehicle interiors. Exterior designs are characterised by a combination of clear and simple lines with bold, ever-changing surfaces.

The Bold for Nature space shows the promise of harmonizing in front of large nature representations, acquiring teachings and finding fundamental motifs therein. This work contains a message for human beings to pursue bold beauty with respect for all things in nature. Speakers will include design critic Alice Rawsthorn and landscape architect Bas Smets, with an evening performance by electronic music producer Pantha du Prince.

Day 2: Joy for Reason

Joy for Reason focuses on experiences that spark joy, which will influence the feel and ambience of Kia’s future vehicles. It stands for playful products, touching experiences, and new interactions. Future designs embracing Joy for Reason will fuse the emotional with the rational, creating vehicles that influence their passengers’ moods by relaxing and inspiring. It will also influence the adoption of new organic materials and more daring colours, expressing a sense of youth and playfulness.

The Joy for Reason space depicts the promise of Kia Design to turn even mundane experiences into unexpected joyful memories. Speakers will be writer Pr. Helen Hester, and producer, actor, and editor Carlo Antonelli. There will also be a classical evening performance by the quartet of La Scala.

Day 3: Tension for Serenity

Tension for Serenity evokes the tension between opposing forces and creative contrasts. It embraces the equilibrium that comes from two opposing forces and encompasses bringing order out of chaos and purpose to the future. Applied to automotive design, Tension for Serenity delivers striking design concepts that use sharp, highly technical details to create surface tension and realise a harmonised, future-oriented vision.

The Tension for Serenity space brings tranquillity through eloquence and harmony at all boundaries where there are conflicts or opposite elements. Speakers include NTS Radio Founder, Femi Adeyemi, and composer and sound designer Nicolas Becker, with an evening performance by singer-songwriter Alewya.

Day 4: Technology for Life

Technology for Life embraces new technologies and innovations to foster positive interactions between humans and machines. It focuses less on devices themselves than on the way humans engage with them, hinting at future Kia products that will adopt a next-generation in-car user experience (UX).

Speakers will include designer Bethan Laura Wood and design curator Marco Sammicheli. In addition, evening performances will feature electronic music by Talpha.

Day 5: Power to Progress

Finally, Power to Progress stands for the drive to move forward, onward, and upward. In the context of design, this means building on the brand’s current strengths. By drawing on and developing the skills and expertise learned throughout Kia’s recent design-led transformation, the designs and layouts of the brand’s future products will continue to evolve. Future designs will draw on experience and creativity to invent and innovate.

The Power to Progress area will illustrate how to pursue the happiness of human beings by harmonising their goals with nature and experiences. Speakers include curator Andrea Lissoni and philosopher Emanuele Coccia. Evening performances will feature musician, sound designer, and drummer Missing Ear; pop music producer Hudson Mohwake, and electronic music DJ Afrodeutsche.

Tackling the challenges of today with a vision for tomorrow

‘Opposites United’ is more than just a design approach. It represents Kia’s attitude towards change – tackling the mobility challenges of today with a vision for tomorrow. For Kia, this means building an EV lineup of 15 models by 2027, upgrading its infotainment technology for an improved customer experience, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

On the road to electrification, these bold and disruptive innovations have been embodied in Kia's vehicle design such as the EV6, the brand’s first dedicated electric vehicle, and the recently unveiled EV9.

"Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy represents far more than just the way our cars look, it is a reflection of the brand's determination to compatibly further two vital fields which have come to be at odds with one another: human wellbeing and environmental sustainability,” says Ho Sung Song, Kia President and CEO. “By adopting the 'Opposites United' ethos across our current and future models, we hope not only to demonstrate Kia's ability to innovate, and create products which go beyond fulfilling the needs of our customers to enrich their experiences as well, but to do so with a vision that also leaves a legacy for future generations."

Sustainable design strategy: Kick-starting a virtuous circle

Besides the guiding principle of the new ‘Opposites United’ philosophy, Kia’s future design will also embrace the company’s new Sustainable Design Strategy. This three-step initiative outlines ways to improve the sustainability of the materials used in building Kia’s cars:

  • Action 1 stands for ‘Leather free,’ meaning Kia will phase out the use of animal-sourced leather starting with the EV9. Replacing leather and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) with recycled materials will reduce the use of toxic chemicals as well as the amount of carbon emitted during the production process.
  • Action 2 denotes ‘ten must-have sustainable items.’ This step defines a baseline of ten sustainable materials – recycled, organic, or biodegradable – which will be applied to all Kia models in the future.
  • Action 3 stands for ‘Bio fabrication,’ the ambitious goal of developing new, bio-based materials for use in cars. Successful tests have already been done with mycelium, which is found in the root structure of mushrooms. To accomplish this, Kia will partner with startups and innovators and invest in research and development to grow new materials for its cars.

Kia has a long history of integrating sustainable materials into its products, starting with the use of bioplastic and sugar cane bio-fibre through the second-generation ‘Soul EV’ in 2014. Now, Kia’s environmentally friendly materials range from eco-processed leather and vegan alternatives to recycled plastic waste, and even recycled fishing nets which were retrieved from the ocean.

“At Kia, we know it’s not enough to build vehicles which are emissions-free at the tailpipe – we want to think about sustainability every step of the way,” says Jochen Paesen, Vice President and Head of Kia Next Design Interior Group. “That includes carefully selecting the materials we use in our cars, so that they are non-toxic and biodegradable.”

Technology: Finding the simplicity in the complex

Technological progress opens up new design possibilities, resulting in unique and improved customer experiences. The combined power of innovation, technology and design can be harnessed to create simple solutions to complex problems. For example, the company’s dedicated BEV platform E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) enables vehicles to be built with a flat floor, reimagining car architecture and turning interiors into unique spaces: from the cabin designed for driving, to the cabin designed as a lounge space.

Another example is GEONIC, a three-dimensional, award-winning hybrid material (iF Award 2022) that is being used in the EV6. GEONIC is a simple yet profound new technique for bringing to life innovative approaches to vehicle interior design, allowing different interior moods for different trim levels.

“Kia is creating interior spaces for drivers and passengers, satisfying the needs of today´s mobility while also looking ahead to the autonomous driving future,” says Karim Habib. “Our goal is to create a positive space where people feel comfortable, relaxed and at home: we are not selling cars – we are selling an experience.”

Kia Niro PHEV wins prestigious Red Dot Award

  • The plug-in hybrid version of the Kia Niro wins in the “Product Design” category
  • Model stands out for embodying ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy and unique use of eco-friendly interior materials
  • Kia Niro also available with hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains

The Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid has been recognized with a Red Dot Design Award in the category “Product Design.” The award is a testament to Kia's commitment to designing innovative, high-quality vehicles that meet the needs of its customers while also staying at the forefront of cutting-edge design.

The Niro Plug-in Hybrid features an emotional yet rational design aesthetic, guided by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. The purposeful and head-turning look was designed to inspire movement. Notable features include contemporary-looking angular ‘Heartbeat’ daytime running lights (DRLs), a distinctive Aero C-Pillar, a bold skid plate and cladding to enhance the electrified CUV’s rugged stance. Combined with the latest evolution of Kia’s signature Tiger Face, the model embodies a distinctly Kia design.

The Kia Niro comes with the choice of three electrified powertrains: full-electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. In line with the eco-friendly driving choices, all three variations also feature eco-friendly interior materials, ranging from recycled wallpaper in the headline, VOC-free paint in the door panels, and PU vegan leather seat coverings, made from Tencel from Eucalyptus trees. In addition, the cargo screen contains 75 per cent recycled fibres.

“We are honoured to be recognized by the Red Dot Design Award for our efforts, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of automotive design,” said Sjoerd Knipping, Vice President of Product and Marketing at Kia Europe. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our design and engineering teams, as well as the winning nature of our design philosophy ‘Opposites United.’

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most highly sought-after seals of design quality. Each year, a jury of international experts examine the submissions for design quality and degree of innovation.

This achievement comes after a long line of design award wins by Kia. The latest success by the Niro Plug-in Hybrid marks the 28th Red Dot awarded to a Kia model since 2009. Last year, the all-new EV6 was crowned ‘Best of the Best’ for its pioneering and forward-looking design, and in 2021, the Kia Sorento also won the Red Dot Award  for its product design.

Kia vehicles aren’t the only Kia products to reap design accolades in recent years. In 2022, the company’s ‘Moving Inspiration Project,’ a design installation highlighting the company’s brand philosophy in Italy, was also awarded a Red Dot Design Award. These awards demonstrate the company’s continued ability to create exceptional products that push the boundaries of design excellence.

About the Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition that takes place every year. It describes itself as “one of the most sought-after marks of quality for good design.” Participants can enter their designs in three different categories: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design and Design Concept. The winners of each category are chosen by an international team of jurors who are experts in their respective fields. Over the course of several days, the jurors assess each submission based on their design quality and degree of innovation. This year’s winners will be further recognised at the Red Dot Gala award ceremony in the Aalto Theatre and the subsequent Designers’ Night in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany on June 19.

KIA SPORTAGE NAMED AMONG AUTOTRADER’S BEST NEW CARS OF 2023

Redesigned SUV is Recognized for its Versatility and Available Electrified Powertrains

  • 2023 Kia Sportage named among Autotrader’s 11 Best New Cars of 2023
  • Fifth-generation compact SUV was redesigned this year, inside, outside, and under the hood

IRVINE, CA, April 6, 2023 – The 2023 Kia Sportage was recently named among Autotrader’s Best New Cars of 2023. The redesigned fifth generation of the iconic SUV – available with internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrains – was honored alongside 10 other top vehicles.

“We are proud to receive Autotrader’s Best New Car of 2023 recognition for the Kia Sportage,” said Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America. “The redesigned Sportage continues to impress adventure seekers and tech-savvy drivers, alike, with its versatility and multi-faceted appeal.”

Autotrader’s Best New Cars of 2023 list is comprised of 11 vehicles selected by a team of expert editors who collectively tested and scored new models using a range of criteria. Each chosen vehicle has unique features specific to various lifestyle needs, including interior comfort, build quality, tech features, driving experience and more, with the editors giving particular focus to vehicles that are groundbreaking or offer significant value in its category. Because there are many new or redesigned vehicles for 2023, the editors only considered models available for purchase within the next nine months. To qualify, the base model of a vehicle must start below $110,000, with most winners priced well below that price.

"The latest Sportage is a significant improvement versus the past model and yet another Kia SUV that is best in class,” said Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader. "What was once a competent compact SUV has been recast as a stylish, tech-laden, and very attractive competitor in the red-hot compact SUV segment."

For model year 2023, the Sportage underwent a significant redesign. Developed as part of Kia’s new global brand transformation, “Movement that Inspires,” the 2023 Sportage subcompact SUV delivers for today’s savvy and adventurous consumers with a capable and rugged trim level (X-Pro), as well as Sportage HEV and Sportage PHEV powertrains.

2023 CEO Investor Day Kia accelerates EV transition with target of 1.6 million EV sales by 2030

- Kia to continue its four core strategies to transform into a 'Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider'

① Global sales: 2030 global sales goal of 4.3 million units

② Electrification: Annual EV sales goal of 1.6 million units by 2030 with 15 EV models by 2027

③ Product Strategy: Kia to apply connectivity to all new models by 2025

④ Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBV): To establish a tailored business structure and offer an integrated solution for PBV; launch a dedicated PBV in 2025

- 2030 financial targets: gross revenue of KRW 160 trillion, operating profit KRW 16 trillion, operating profit margin of 10%

- Kia to invest KRW 32 trillion won over next five years, with 45% dedicated to future business areas

(SEOUL) April 5, 2023 – Kia Corporation (Kia) today provided an update on its future strategies through the Kia CEO Investor Day event held in Seoul, Korea.

Kia has updated its mid- to long-term business strategy with a focus on electrification. Kia’s updated 2030 annual sales target is 4.3 million units, of which 2.38 million units will be electrified vehicles. The financial targets have also been increased to KRW 160 trillion in gross revenue, 16 trillion won in operating profit and 10 percent in operating profit margin.

Kia first unveiled its mid- to long-term strategy entitled ‘Plan S’ in 2020, which focuses on a pre-emptive transformation towards an EV-focused business and providing customized mobility solutions. Since then, Kia has held a CEO Investor Day every year to present updates on the company’s future vision and goals.

During the 2023 CEO Investor Day, Kia announced updated goals and specific details of its business strategy.  Kia’s 2030 global sales target of 4.3 million units is 34.4 percent higher than its 2023 annual sales target of 3.2 million units. It also plans to become a leading EV brand by raising the proportion of electrified car sales to 55 percent (2.38 million units) in 2030. This is a 7.5 percent (300,000 units) increase from the 2030 target announced in 2022, while the global sales target for electrified vehicles has increased by 15.5 percent (320,000 units).

“In 2021, Kia went through a full-scale transformation of its corporate name, logo, product and design, as well as corporate strategy. As a result, our brand value has improved significantly, helping us to win a number of 'Car of the Year' awards in key markets,” said Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song. “In order to become a Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider, Kia needs to continue its efforts to strengthen Kia brand identity and establish an innovative and customer-centric business model.”

Key within the refreshed sales targets, Kia increased its 2026 annual EV sales target to 1 million units and 2030 EV sales target to 1.6 million units annually, representing a 25 percent increase and 33 percent increase, respectively, from goals announced a year earlier.

The update is based on Kia’s confidence in its award-winning products. The EV6 won the '2022 European Car of the Year' and '2023 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.’ Kia now plans to build an EV lineup of 15 models by 2027, including the flagship model EV9 revealed recently. This is one more than the ‘14 models by 2027’ announced a year earlier.

It will continue to implement new technologies on its product and apply connectivity features to all new models released after 2025, allowing customers to update and optimize vehicle performance through over the air (OTA) updates. Regarding autonomous driving technology, the EV9 will feature HDP (Highway Drive Pilot), a conditional level three autonomous driving technology, which allows the driver to operate the vehicle "hands-off" under specific conditions. In 2026, Kia plans to introduce HDP2 technology that will support "eyes-off" driving under certain conditions.

The 2023 CEO Investor Day event also provided a detailed blueprint for the purpose-built vehicle (PBV) business. The company plans to launch a mid-size dedicated PBV model in 2025 at a dedicated PBV production facility in Hwaseong, and will gradually build a full lineup of PBVs, ranging from small to large, including a robo-taxi with autonomous driving technology.

In addition, the company plans to commercialize data and software-based solutions to introduce customized products and services for diverse needs of customers, and to develop mobility services in connection with Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and robotics businesses.

Kia also aims to continue improving customers’ positive brand perception and competitiveness of its business in order to achieve mid-to-long term financial performance. The long-term financial goals include growing gross revenue to KRW 160 trillion in 2030, an 84 percent  increase from 2022; increasing operating profit to KRW 16 trillion, a 122 percent improvement over 2022; and increasing operating profit margin to 10 percent, a 1.6 percentage points uplift over 2022.

Kia also plans to continue to expand investment to secure future competitiveness. It plans to invest KRW 32 trillion over the next five years until 2027. In particular, Kia aims to increase the portion of investment in future businesses to 45 percent.

Kia to continue the ‘four core goals’ of its 2030 strategy

Kia is witnessing the positive outcome from implementation of its Plan S strategy over the past three years and is establishing a strong position as a leading global EV brand. The company will maintain momentum and will continue to pursue its four core goals set last year to achieve its new goals for 2030: global sales of 4.3 million units; accelerating the EV transition with an EV sales target of 1.6 million units; strengthening product competitiveness with a focus on autonomous driving technology and connectivity; and establishing a tailored PBV business structure.

1) 2030 annual global sales target of 4.3 million with a focus on electrified vehicles

Kia aims to create growth momentum that outperforms the wider market growth with its competitive products and enhanced brand perception. Kia also expects issues resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the parts shortages to gradually improve to support the sales growth.

Starting with this year's global sales target of 3.2 million units, Kia has set a goal of achieving 4.01 million units in 2026 and 4.3 million units in 2030, up 150,000 units for 2026 and 300,000 units for 2030 from the targets announced last year.

The sale of electrified vehicles will drive the growth, with its sales proportion expected to increase from 21 percent in 2023 to 55 percent by 2030, a 3 percentage points increase from the 2030 previous target announced last year.

2) Accelerating EV Strategy: Expanding to 15 EVs in 2027, targeting 1.6 million EV sales in 2030

Kia plans to further accelerate its electrification efforts to strengthen its position as a leading brand in the global EV market.

First, it plans to further expand its electric vehicle product lineup. By 2027, Kia will introduce its EV lineup consisting of 15 models that includes the EV9 and the EV5, adding one additional model from last year's plan.

Revealed in March this year, EV9 aims for an all-electric WLTP target driving range of over 541km, an ultra-fast 800 volt charging system that replenishes the battery pack with sufficient charge to power the vehicle for 239km in approximately 15 minutes1 and impressive athletic performance which enables the SUV to surge from 0-to-100km/h in 9.4 seconds for the RWD Long Range model, 8.2 seconds for the Standard RWD and 6.0 seconds (or 5.3 seconds with an optional Boost feature) for the AWD variant.

In line with Kia’s transition to developing Software Defined Vehicles (SDV), the EV9 incorporates over-the-air (OTA) updates and the ability to continuously upgrade their vehicles through the Kia Connect Store for customers who seek greater control and customization.

The EV9 will be the first Kia model to include the more advanced autonomous driving technologies, namely the HDP (Highway Driving Pilot), which offers conditional level three autonomous driving.

With the expansion of its EV lineup, Kia plans to rapidly increase EV sales. Starting with a target of 258,000 units of EV sales this year, the company has set a goal of selling 1,005,000 electric vehicles in 2026 and 1.6 million units in 2030, up 400,000 units (33 percent) from its target of 1.2 million units announced during the CEO Investor Day last year.

In order to respond to fast-growing EV markets around the globe, Kia aims to locally produce strategic models that drives regional sales.

In Europe, Kia plans to locally produce small and mid-sized EVs, as they are the key drivers of sales in the region. In the U.S., Kia also aims to produce key EV models locally, beginning 2024, in line with implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Kia in China plans to produce small and medium-sized EV models, including the recently unveiled EV5, and India will also produce small EV models optimized for the local market and other emerging markets from 2025.

Korea will serve as a global hub for research, development, and production of EV models. Kia will build its first dedicated EV factory in Korea in 2024. Kia will convert the production line of factory in Gwangmyeong for EV production, planning to start production of two EV models next year.

Gwangmyeong EV factory will maximize production capacity by introducing cutting-edge innovative technologies such as 3D virtual reality process; data-based integrated manufacturing platform; and unmanned and automated facilities. It will also achieve a reduction in carbon emissions through use of eco-friendly paint and energy saving technologies.

3) Future technology focused product strategy and development system for SDV

Kia has identified connectivity services; autonomous driving technology; performance; and design as its four key product attributes to lead the future mobility market and develop differentiated products.

Following the plan announced last year, Kia will also build a connected car data cloud and apply connectivity features to all newly launched vehicles from 2025. Its wide array of  OTA services and additional features available features available at the Kia Connect Store will help customers to choose features tailored to their lifestyle and keep them up-to-date at all times.

Kia's autonomous driving technology AutoMode will also be enhanced starting with the EV9. HDP, a conditional level three autonomous driving technology that does not require human steering wheel control for certain road sections, such as highways, will be applied to EV9 for the first time this year.

By 2024, the company plans to implement partial eye-off functions under certain conditions by enhancing the feature through OTA updates and raise the maximum speed of autonomous driving and improve road recognition rates. In 2026, Kia plans to further strengthen the autonomous driving with HDP2 technology that utilizes high precision navigation.

In addition, Kia plans to focus its capabilities on securing high performance and differentiated design as key elements of product competitiveness. The high-performance GT trim will be developed not only for the EV9 but also for all future EV models.

Regarding design, Kia will implement user-friendly design based on philosophy of “Opposites United”, while actively adopting ESG management approaches, such as recycling and use of non-toxic materials and biomaterials. For instance, 34 kilograms of eco-friendly materials have also been applied to various parts of the EV9, and the proportion of recycled plastic applications will be increased to 20 percent by 2030.

To support and strengthen these four core product strategies, the vehicle development system will be restructured for SDV.  The goal is to develop software that has integrated control over various systems and hardware that accelerates the vehicle development process and lower the associated costs.

Furthermore, Kia plans to strengthen personalization services provided to customers, reduce initial purchase and operation costs of vehicles, ensuring both high product quality and residual values.

4) Establishing a tailored business structure for PBV

Kia has started its Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) business with an understanding that PBV business will serve as one of the company’s key future businesses. Kia is developing PBV business with a focus on the needs of customers and is involving them from the development stage of PBV in order to offer customized PBV solutions. For instance, Kia last year unveiled to potential customers a dedicated PBV in its development stage due for mass production in 2025, in order to collect feedback.

In terms of production, the company is building a PBV factory in Hwaseong. The dedicated PBV, to be unveiled in 2025, will be developed as medium-sized PBV for use in wide variety of businesses, and has a structure in which various types of bodies can be placed on a flat skateboard-type platform, allowing the size and shape to be adjusted according to the purpose and needs.

In line with the expansion of the PBV market, Kia aims to gradually expand its PBV lineup to include a PBV robotaxi with autonomous driving; a small PBV optimized for delivering goods or food; and a large PBV that can replace public transportation or be used as a mobile office.

Strengthening ESG management and seeking new business utilizing Hyundai Motor Group initiatives

Kia is stepping up its ESG management efforts by establishing a mid- to long-term roadmap in 2020 and announcing its Carbon Neutrality goals in 2021.

Kia plans to fully change to renewable energy for electricity use in global worksites by 2040 and achieve 100 percent electrification in four key markets (Korea, US, Europe and China) by 2040.

Under this goal, Kia reduced its carbon emissions by 4.5 percent in 2022 compared to 2019. Going forward, Kia will continue reducing carbon emissions to achieve net zero in all stages of the value chain, including supply, production, logistics, and disposal, as well as the customer use stage of automobiles, by 2045.

Use of recycled plastics and biomaterials, applied to the EV9, will be expanded to all future models. Kia has been working with the Ocean Cleanup, a global environmental non-profit organization, to collect waste plastic from the ocean and putting it to reuse as vehicle accessories in 2024 and vehicle parts in 2026.

Regarding Hyundai Motor Group’s future projects, such as advanced air mobility (AAM) and robotics, Kia will not only make investments but also continue to make efforts to create new business opportunities. With a clear focus on PBV as future key business, Kia will also review various business opportunities that involves AAM and vertiport, logistics robot Stretch, and last mile mobility.

Through these measures, Kia is looking to achieve financial targets of KRW 97.6 trillion in gross revenue (up 12.7 percent from the previous year); KRW 9.3 trillion in operating profit (up 28.6 percent); and 9.5 percent (up 1.1 percent) in operating profit.

As its 2026 financial targets, Kia proposed gross revenue of KRW 134 trillion; operating profit of KRW 12 trillion; and operating profit margin of 9 percent. For 2030, Kia aims to achieve gross revenue of KRW 160 trillion; operating profit of KRW 16 trillion, and an operating profit margin of 10 percent.

Key factors in achieving mid- to long-term goals include improving the profitability of EV sales by reducing costs for key parts and expanding sales, and securing additional revenue streams via software and services commercialization with OTA and feature updates.

Especially, EV contribution to profit is expected to increase from 5 percent  in 2022 to 32 percent in 2026, and by 2030, it is expected to expand to 53 percent, more than half of Kia’s total profit.

Kia is aiming to lower the cost of batteries by 25 percent  compared to prices in 2018 by year 2026. In addition, the company aims to achieve further reductions in battery costs by 55 percent compared to 2018 prices by 2030. Regarding the investment plan for the next five years from this year to 2027, Kia will invest a total of KRW 32 trillion of which 45 percent will be dedicated to future business investments.

Kia also shared its mid- to long-term dividend policy aimed at enhancing shareholder value. Kia has decided on a dividend payout ratio at 20-35 percent  to retain investment capability, expand financial flexibility and enhance shareholder value.

Furthermore, with a confidence in its long-term profitability, Kia aims to execute a share buyback program to enhance shareholder value for next five years. For the duration of five years, Kia aims to purchase up to KRW 0.5 trillion worth of shares each year and cancel at least 50 percent of the repurchased shares.
