2023 KIA NIRO EV AWARDED “TOP PICK: COMMUTER EV” BY CARS.COM

IRVINE, Calif., March 29, 2023 – Today, the 2023 Kia Niro EV was recognized as Cars.com’s “Top Pick: Commuter EV.” This is the second category-level award from Cars.com for the Niro family, following the Niro Hybrid being named Cars.com’s Best Car of 2023, and the first win for a Kia vehicle in this competition. The editors of Cars.com selected the Niro EV from among electric vehicles in four categories.

“With standard DC fast charging compatibility and cutting-edge technology, the Niro EV offers the efficiency and features that commuters demand,” said Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America.

Inside and out, the Niro EV presents bold design inspired by Kia’s “Opposites United” philosophy that infuses inspiration from nature with aerodynamic refinement. The second-generation model retains a compact footprint but is larger than the vehicle it replaces. Available panoramic, dual 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system and an optional eight-speaker Harman Kardon® sound system1 add premium touches to the interior. Powered by a 64.8 kWh battery and a 150kW (201-hp) motor with DC fast-charging compatibility as standard, the Niro EV is rated at an EPA-estimated 253 miles of all electric range[1]. When connected to a Level 3 fast charger, the Niro EV can charge from 10 to 80 percent state of charge in under 45 minutes2, at a maximum charging speed of 85 kW. Available on both Niro EV trims, the Preserve Package adds cold-weather readiness with heated rear seats3 and a heat pump.

Design: reshaping the SUV user experience for millennial families

Guided by the brand’s 'Opposites United' design philosophy, the EV9 re-envisions the all-electric SUV with a unique balance of natural and modern elements. The ‘Bold for Nature’ design pillar, which inspires the combination of elements from the natural and material worlds, has played a pivotal role in forming the design of the EV9.

The Kia EV9’s exterior provides a sense of serene contemporary calmness befitting of a sophisticated EV for a new age of sustainable mobility. The vehicle features a 3,100-mm wheelbase, supported by a choice of 21-inch, 20-inch or 19-inch wheels. With an overall length of 5,010 mm, it stands at 1,980-mm wide and 1,755-mm tall[4], displaying a bold and contemporary appearance while still maintaining its unique character.

The EV9's front exudes confidence, clarity, and calmness with its clear-cut lines and surfaces. The SUV’s signature 'Digital Tiger Face' showcases its unique identity, which is accentuated by the 'Digital Pattern Lighting Grille'[5] and vertical headlamps, giving the EV9 a visionary and futuristic look. The Digital Tiger Face also features two clusters of small cube lamps adjacent to each headlamp. The EV9's 'Star Map’ LED daytime running lights (DRL) create a sophisticated animated lighting pattern that will signify Kia's Digital Tiger Face for future EV models, while providing a new illumination experience.

In addition to the standard model, Kia has unveiled the GT-line model design, which features a unique aesthetic that distinguishes it from the standard model. The front and rear bumpers, wheels, and roof rack have undergone a transformation, and the GT-line features a distinctive black color palette exuding a strong and assertive presence, setting it apart from its standard counterpart. Notably, the GT-line includes an exclusive ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’ that adds an element of dynamism and sophistication to its already impressive design.

Beyond its stunning exterior, the EV9 also delivers on performance with an impressive aerodynamic coefficient of 0.28. This has been achieved through the implementation of several advanced features. These include Kia's first-ever 3D-sculpted underbody cover, which features a convex shape at the front and a concave shape at the rear, along with aerodynamic wheels, and innovative air curtains integrated into the front bumper. These elements combine seamlessly to provide superior airflow control and optimized performance and efficiency, delivering an exhilarating driving experience.

The Kia EV9 offers a range of seating options that cater to diverse needs. It offers seven-seater and six-seater configurations and a variety of second-row seat options, totaling to four[6], suitable for different situations such as moving, charging, and resting. The first-row features relaxation seats that ensure a comfortable resting posture. The second row, for the first time among global EV models, offers four seating options, including 3-seater bench seats, basic-type, relaxation-type, and swivel-type two-seater independent seats, providing customers with a variety of usage methods to choose from.

When equipped with the second-row relaxation seats, the EV9 allows first and second-row occupants to recline together while the SUV is charging. With the swivel seat option, the second-row seats swivel 180 degrees to enable conversations with those seated in the third row. Occupants in the third row are provided with charging points and cup holders.

More information on Kia EV9 design is available in the design reveal press release at https://www.kianewscenter.com.

Sustainability: setting new standards for responsible mobility

Kia’s strategic commitment to become a leader in sustainable mobility, and its declared roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, extend beyond the provision of zero-emission EV drivetrains. They also encompass the materials used in the vehicle’s construction, and the EV9 takes this to the next level, with eco-friendly materials applied to set new standards in sustainable mobility.

The Kia EV9 marks a pioneering milestone as the first model to embrace the brand’s three-step Design Sustainability Strategy, initiated to phase out the use of leather, apply ten ‘must-have’ sustainable items to all new Kia models and continuously increase the use of bio-based materials such as corn, sugar cane, and natural oils. Kia’s target is to increase the proportion of recycled plastics it uses to 20 per cent by 2030.

The EV9's color palette draws inspiration from nature's four core elements, namely light, air, earth, and water, to establish a connection with nature's beauty and fuse it into the EV9's design philosophy.

The EV9's interior features a total of six different combinations, from a light modern grey to elegant natural tones and a more sporting version for the GT-line.

Electric drivetrain: full range of multiple zero-emission mobility solutions

The EV9 features a broad choice of electric powertrain configurations based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and utilizing Kia’s fourth-generation battery technology. A 76.1-kWh battery is offered exclusively with the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Standard model[7], while a 99.8-kWh battery is fitted in both the RWD Long Range and All Wheel Drive (AWD) variants.

The RWD Long Range model utilizes a 150 kW / 350 Nm electric motor, endowing the SUV with the ability to accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in 9.4 seconds, as preliminary data reveals. Also powered by a single electric motor, albeit a more powerful 160 kW / 350 Nm variant, the Standard RWD EV9 can accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds.

The AWD variant is equipped with two electric motors that together unleash a total power output of 283 kW and a combined torque of 600 Nm. This potent combination enables the SUV to surge from 0-to-100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds. And even greater levels of performance are available with an optional Boost feature, available for later purchase at the Kia Connect Store. The combined torque is increased to an exceptional 700 Nm, enabling the EV9 to accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

Kia’s holistic approach to engineering the EV9’s electric powertrain has ensured that the SUV’s athletic performance is complemented by exemplary range. This enables EV9 customers to spend as much time as possible on the road and as little as possible at the charging station, inspiring complete confidence in families to undertake lengthy road trips. For example, the RWD Long Range model with 19-inch wheels offers an estimated target range of over 541 km, according to WLTP. Using an ultra-fast 800 Volt charging system, the vehicle’s battery pack can be replenished with sufficient charge to power the vehicle for 239 km in approximately 15 minutes[8].

The EV9 comes with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality through its Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), enabling the discharging of energy from the vehicle battery. Families can use up to 3.68 kW[9] of power for laptops or camping equipment.

Highway Driving Pilot[10]: unlocking conditional Level 3 autonomy

The EV9 will take a significant step towards full autonomy. Key to achieving this is Kia’s Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system, which will provide the EV9 with conditional Level 3 autonomous driving. Fifteen sensors, including two lidars, enable it to scan for and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view, enabling it to detect and react to the road and other users to prevent potential collisions.

By providing intelligent, proactive, real-time assistance across a wide range of conditions, Kia’s Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system will meet the criteria required to deliver Level 3 autonomy in certain areas of the world. The car will be capable of conditional driving automation where conditions permit, enabling the driver to temporarily take a break from controlling the vehicle.

Kia is planning to offer the HDP in the EV9 GT-line model in the future. Further details on the HDP will be disclosed nearer its market availability.

Kia Connect Store[11]: update your EV9 anytime anywhere

Kia’s fresh thinking as to what a family SUV should be extends to how customers can select the equipment specification of their EV9. Beyond the standard features of the EV9, the Kia Connect Store offers a wide array of options. This enables customers to keep their EV9 constantly updated by upgrading the SUV’s digital features and services without any need to take the vehicle to a dealership. The EV9’s ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’ technology can be further enhanced with the addition of the ‘Lighting Pattern’ feature. Customers can also specify additional performance for the AWD EV9 with an optional Boost feature unlocks an extra 100 Nm of torque for the electric motor for a more thrilling and dynamic driving experience.

Kia's Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) is also offered as a digital feature, as is content streaming for occupants to enjoy through the vehicle’s Audio Visual, Navigation and Telematics (AVNT) system.

Safety and convenience: designed and engineered to enhance the driving experience of all occupants

The EV9’s numerous additional features facilitated by Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) include Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2). This technology enables the EV9 to park itself without the need for driver intervention, whether in or out of the vehicle, with the driver initiating the procedure via the Kia smart key called Digital Key 2.

By using ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles, the RSPA 2 automatically maneuvers the EV9 into the designated parking space, controlling the accelerator, brakes, and gearshift. The system also automatically applies the brakes if an object representing an obstruction is detected in the vehicle’s path. The EV9 also features Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) to prevent collisions with oncoming vehicles when reversing.

Alongside these features, the vehicle incorporates numerous advanced driver assistance systems from Kia to enhance passenger safety, such as Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), designed to aid drivers in potentially dangerous scenarios. The Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) ensures safe driving on highways and automobile-only roads, while Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) enables lane changes and uses a hands-on detection (HOD) sensor to ensure driver engagement.

In addition, the EV9 offers pre- and post-driving safety and convenience with features such as Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance (RCCA) and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA). Finally, Digital Key 2 utilizes Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology, allowing users to open and start their car using their smartphone, even when the key is in their pocket or bag – another first for Kia.

Kia has leveraged only the most advanced engineering design and technologies to provide EV9 customers, and their families, with optimum safety in all conditions. The EV9’s chassis frame structure features an exceptionally high-torsional stiffness and the world’s first patent-pending B-pillar connection structure technology featuring an extended overlap between crash barrier and side sill. These technological advances provide class-leading levels of protection and safeguarding for both occupants and batteries, with in-cabin protection enhanced by ten airbags[12].

Kia's global campaign for the EV9: ‘Here to reshape the way we move’

Kia is set to embark on a series of global campaign activities, encapsulated in the statement ‘Here to reshape the way we move’. This statement speaks to the company's commitment to innovation and its vision for a future that is more sustainable, efficient, and convenient.

The EV9 is set to make its inaugural physical debut at the Seoul Mobility Show 2023 later this month. It will then be showcased at this year’s New York International Auto Show in early April. With the EV9, Kia is poised to set a new standard for electric vehicles that revolutionizes the concept of traveling in style and comfort.

IRVINE, Calif., March 21, 2023 – Three Kia models were awarded top honors in the annual “Best Cars for Families” rankings presented by the editors of U.S. News & World Report. The rugged and refined 2023 Kia Telluride SUV was named “Best 3-Row SUV for Families” for the fourth consecutive year, the all-electric 2023 Kia EV6 performance crossover was chosen as the first “Best Electric Vehicle for Families,” and the 2023 Kia K5 sedan earned its first title as “Best Midsize Car for Families.”

The Kia EV9 Revealed: Groundbreaking EV Fusing Progressive, Bold Design with Authentic SUV Character

  • Strong SUV identity fused with elegant EV styling to reshape both the segment and way of life for the electrified era
  • Inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, the EV9 combines contrasting qualities of nature and modernity in its character
  • Sleek and bold exterior expresses confidence, clarity, and calmness
  • Kia’s E-GMP flat-floor EV architecture amplifies interior space with third row seating, enhancing comfort while exuding a sense of high sophistication
  • EV9 readied to debut globally later this month, accelerating the brand’s transformation towards a sustainable mobility solutions provider

(SEOUL) March 15, 2023 – Kia Corporation has today revealed full images of the exterior and interior design of the Kia EV9, its first three-row electric flagship SUV, which encapsulates bold styling and sophisticated elegance inside and out. The Kia EV9 represents a pivotal step forward in the company's journey towards becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

The bold and confident visual presence of the EV9 is inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, which harnesses the creative tension generated by the divergent values of nature and modernity to deliver a harmonious whole. Kia’s designers have fused a unique combination of sleek, sculptural shapes and assured, assertive geometry to deliver a strikingly contemporary yet gracefully serene SUV.

"The Kia EV9 breaks new ground, aiming to redefine standards for design, connectivity, usability and environmental responsibility," said Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. "The Kia EV9 offers customers an exceptionally high-quality proposition and a fresh EV perspective in the family SUV sector. This new vehicle typology provides instinctive experiences and excellent comfort for not just the driver, but all occupants, through innovative use of space, technology and design."

Exterior design: paving new paths for future electric SUV design

Guided by the brand’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, Kia’s designers strive to create vehicles with unprecedented visual appeal. In particular, the ‘Bold for Nature’ pillar of the ideology, which inspires the combination of elements from the natural and material worlds, has played a key role in forming the exterior design of the EV9. The result is a vehicle that effortlessly combines an undoubted aura of rugged capability for all conditions, with the serene calmness of a sophisticated EV that paves new paths for future electric SUV design.

The front of the EV9 is denoted by simple clear-cut lines and body surfaces, which exude confidence, clarity and calmness in equal measure. Accentuated by the ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’ and striking vertical headlamps, the EV9’s signature ‘Digital Tiger Face’ imparts a visionary and futuristic look and feel. The Digital Tiger Face features two clusters of small cube lamps within the bodywork adjacent to each headlamp. The EV9’s innovative ‘Star Map LED daytime running lights (DRL)’ create a new illumination experience and delivers a sophisticated animated lighting pattern that will denote Kia’s Digital Tiger Face for the brand’s future EV models.

Formed from a polygonal design language, the side profile of the EV9 effortlessly combines a strong and indisputable SUV identity with exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. Dynamic triangular fender structures and highly pronounced geometric wheel arches combine with the fuselage body, unifying the polygonal elements into a cohesive structure that presents a determined look. Flush door handles and a tapered back roofline gives a sense of smooth and efficient motion.

At the rear of the vehicle, the simple, clean lines of the tailgate, which are elegantly detailed by the slim rear lights that mirror the design of those at the front, further reflect the EV9’s strong and confident stance.

Interior design: new social space with enhanced comfort and technology

The Kia ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy ‘Technology for Life’ pillar ensures that only technology and innovation that promote positive, intuitive interactions between humans and machines are created – realizing new possibilities for mobility. These values have played a pivotal role in the creation of the interior of the EV9. They have enabled Kia’s designers to prioritize space, comfort and technology for all passengers, reimagining what a family SUV can offer.

Built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV9’s long wheelbase, low beltline, and completely flat electric vehicle architecture have facilitated the creation of generous space for all occupants to connect and relax with lounge-style comfort in all three rows of seats. Offered in both six and seven-seat formats, Kia captured feedback from families to evaluate seating configurations and features to ensure the EV9 delivers equality of space, comfort and experience for all occupants without placing all of its focus on the driver.

Occupants sitting in the first and second-row seats can simultaneously recline their seats to relax and rest when the EV9 is charging. The seats in the second row can be effortlessly swiveled 180 degrees so that occupants can interact with those sitting in the third row. The third-row seats also offer cup holders and charging points for mobile devices.

Throughout the spacious, light, airy cabin, the EV9 embodies an elegantly simple, premium quality, exceptionally user-friendly design. The open, floating panoramic dashboard extends from the steering wheel to the vehicle's center. Two 12.3-inch touch screens integrated with one 5-inch segment display improve the digital experience, offering effortless control of the vehicle’s functions and ensuring physical buttons are kept to a minimum.

The center console is equipped with ample storage options, including a spacious compartment located at its base. The center console doors are further designed to add to the overall refinement of the interior space.

The EV9’s extended display high-definition audio visual, navigation and telematics (AVNT) screen creates a rich and immersive experience. It enhances occupants’ ability to engage and interact with the digital world seamlessly. Beneath the AVNT screen, an array of hidden type touch buttons provides a start/stop function along with AVNT and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control.

Imminent world premiere: The Kia EV9, Here to reshape the way we move

The Kia EV9 will make its digital global premiere in late March. During the event, Kia will disclose all product information and roll out the global campaign with the slogan, ‘Here to reshape the way we move.’

Kia EV9 SUV Exterior Teased in Video Clips

  • Kia releases teaser clips offering glimpse of the Kia EV9 exterior design
  • Sleek silhouette, signature lighting, clear-cut lines hint at the electric SUV’s bold and confident look
  • The Kia EV9 to accelerate the brand’s transformation towards a sustainable mobility solutions provider

(SEOUL) March 2, 2023 – Kia Corporation today unveiled a set of video clips to tease its highly anticipated Kia EV9, the brand’s dedicated battery electric SUV. The Kia EV9 flagship SUV is set to accelerate the company’s transformation into a sustainable mobility solutions provider in the era of electrification.

The Kia EV9 teaser video, available to watch at Kia Worldwide YouTube Channel, showcases a silhouette of the flagship SUV model, featuring its prominent front and sleek body surfaces. The striking lighting patterns created by the front and rear lamps complete the EV9’s bold identity.

The video clips also preview the Kia EV9’s unique blend of sleek and sculptural design and confident and assertive geometry.

The name, EV9, comes from Kia's EV nomenclature, pairing the prefix ‘EV’ (electric vehicle) with the number ‘9’ (nine), which represents the model’s segment among Kia’s dedicated electric vehicle lineup.

Like the Kia EV6, the Kia EV9 is built upon the company’s dedicated battery electric vehicle platform, Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

Kia will fully reveal both the exterior and interior design in mid-March, and the product information will be fully disclosed during the Kia EV9 World Premiere in late March.

NINE KIA MODELS EARN 2023 CAR AND DRIVER EDITORS’ CHOICE AWARDS

Distinguished list highlights publication’s annual standard of automotive excellence

  • Rio, Soul, Niro Hybrid and PHEV, K5, Sportage, Sorento, Carnival, and the Car and Driver 10Best-winning EV6 and Telluride were selected from more than 400 models tested
  • The winning Kia models emphasize style, performance and value across the automaker’s world-class portfolio

IRVINE, CA, March 1, 2023 – Nine Kia models were named to the 2023 Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Awards list, representing the publication’s annual standard of automotive excellence. The winners, all 2023 model year vehicles, include the Sportage, Sorento, Carnival, Niro Hybrid and PHEV, K5, Soul, Rio, and the Car and Driver 10Best-winning EV6 and Telluride (four-time winner). Car and Driver’s winning choices were selected from more than 400 models that the editors tested, rated, and ranked across 39 market vehicle segments—from crossover SUVs to electric vehicles and sedans to family-sized vans.

"As the Kia brand continues to earn praise from our customers and industry observers alike, we are honored by this latest accolade from the editors of Car and Driver,” said Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America. “To have nine Kia vehicles on this distinguished list is a new high watermark that speaks to the design, quality and craftsmanship of our world-class model line as a whole.”

This latest honor comes on the heels of the 2023 Kia EV6 and 2023 Kia Telluride being ranked on Car and Driver’s coveted 10Best Trucks and SUVs list. The EV6 was also recently named North American Utility Vehicle of the Year™ by the North American Car of the Year jury.

“Kia has been coming on strong in recent years, building more and more vehicles that are showing up well in our testing,” said Rich Ceppos, director, Car and Driver Buyer’s Guide. “Their inclusion on our Editors’ Choice list is confirmation that they’re members of the automotive honor roll—no small achievement.”

The criteria used to develop the Editors’ Choice list includes the results of Car and Driver’s rigorous instrumented testing, subjective editor evaluations, how well a vehicle fulfills its intended mission and each vehicle’s market segment ranking versus competitors. The full list of award winners is available at CarandDriver.com.

KIA AMERICA POSTS BEST-EVER FEBRUARY SALES

  • Seventh consecutive monthly record for the fast-growing Kia brand
  • 24-percent increase over the same period last year
  • Five Kia models reached best-ever February totals

IRVINE, Calif., March 1, 2023 – Kia America’s record-breaking sales trajectory continued with best-ever February sales of 60,859. The milestone performance follows the best retail sales total in company history in 2022 and marks Kia’s seventh consecutive monthly sales record. Five Kia nameplates – Carnival, Forte, Niro, Sportage and Telluride – posted best-ever February totals and sales of Kia’s electrified models increased 32-percent over the same period last year.

“Kia’s path to success continues with our second month of record-breaking sales in 2023, and the seventh straight record-breaking month overall,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “As our production and inventory levels continue to increase, we are able to fully capitalize on the demand we have built across our full range of capable SUVs, sporty sedans and innovative electrified models.”

In addition to record-breaking sales, several significant industry awards were bestowed on various models within Kia’s world-class line-up, including:

  • Kia America was ranked the number one mass-market brand in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study for the third consecutive year after owners reported the fewest issues after three years[i]. Adding to this substantial award were three segment wins, including Forte (Compact Car) and Sportage (Compact SUV).
  • Ten Kia models were named to the 2023 Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Awards list, representing the publication’s annual standard of automotive excellence. The winners, all 2023 model year vehicles, included the Sportage, Sorento, Carnival, Niro Hybrid, Niro PHEV, K5, Soul, Rio, and the Car and Driver 10Best-winning EV6 and Telluride (a four-time winner).
  • The 2023 Kia Telluride was named a Top Safety Pick + by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The award comes after the IIHS implemented more stringent requirements for its TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards in 2023, demanding better side crash protection and improved pedestrian crash prevention systems and eliminating subpar headlights from the field of qualifying vehicles.
  • Three Kia models named among the finalists across three categories in the 2023 World Car Awards. The Kia Niro is among the list of finalists for 2023 World Car of the Year, while its electrified variant, the Niro EV, is a finalist for 2023 World Electric Vehicle. And with an incredible 567 horsepower on tap, the EV6 GT is a finalist in the 2023 World Performance Car category.
  • The 2022 Kia EV6 was named “Best of the Year” in the 41st annual MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards. The EV6 was also awarded “Best EV” alongside three other top electric vehicles.
  • The 2023 Kia Sportage was named the Utility Vehicle of the Year in the 2023 AutoGuide Awards, where editors recognize the best vehicles on the market today.
  • The 2023 Kia Niro HEV was named Best Car of 2023 by Cars.com, beating four other vehicles for the top spot. In addition, two other Kia models – the 2023 Kia Carnival and the 2023 Sorento – were honored by the website. Carnival was named Best Family Car of 2023 and the 2023 Sorento was nominated for Best SUV of 2023.
