KIA MOTORS AMERICA DONATES 2020 NIRO EV

Vehicle Donation to Highlight and Promote the Use of Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Kia Motors America has donated a 2020 Niro EV to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in an effort to raise awareness and increase adoption of alternative fuel vehicles. The Niro EV will be used by MIT employees and other authorized individuals for university-related purposes and whenever feasible, the Niro EV will also be included in MIT-sponsored events pertaining to alternative energy or clean energy initiatives. When the vehicle is not is use, MIT’s Information Systems and Technology Department will park the vehicle in various campus locations, therefore drawing attention to alternative fuel vehicles as a normal course of business. 

“Donating a Niro EV to MIT, one of the most revered institutions of higher learning in the country will raise the profile of alternative-use vehicles and draw attention to the important role these vehicles will play in the future of mobility,” said Russell Wager, director, marketing operations, Kia Motors America. “Kia is committed to a sustainable future and has invested $12 billion to develop autonomous and green technologies.”

Kia Motors appoints Won Kyu Kang as Head of Design Innovation Division

  • Won Kyu Kang will oversee advanced design planning and future design strategy for Kia Motors

(SEOUL) October 26, 2020 – Kia Motors Corporation has appointed Won Kyu Kang as Vice President and Head of the Kia Design Innovation Group. Starting in his new role in November, Mr. Kang will be based at the brand’s design headquarters, Kia Design Center in Namyang, Korea and will report to Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Design Center.

Specializing in advanced design planning, Mr. Kang will lead the strategic development of Kia’s design by giving shape to future design plans in both exterior and interior design across the entire product portfolio. His appointment is the latest development in Kia’s move to establish a leadership position in electrification and capitalize on new design opportunities. Advanced design is seen as key element of this, with electric and electrified vehicles posing new challenges and opportunities in form and architecture.

An alumnus of the Transportation Design course at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, Mr. Kang brings with him 15 years’ experience in exterior design. He has overseen a range of exterior design projects, including research into merging premium vehicle design with future mobility technologies.

His most recent role was Creative Director at BMW Group Designworks in Shanghai, China, where he led the design development process for a range of automotive products. He previously spent much of his career at BMW Group, and was the lead exterior designer for the 2015 BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage concept.

“I am honored to join the Kia design team, particularly at a time when the automotive industry is facing such a radical shift,” comments Kang. “I believe Kia will play a major-role in defining the new era of design with a wide range of electrified products and a visionary mobility roadmap for the future. Mr. Kang is one of a number of high-profile design appointments made by Kia Motors in recent years as the brand further strengthens its design capabilities for the years ahead. Under its ‘Plan S’ strategy, Kia aims to establish a leadership position in the future automotive industry, drawing on R&D expertise in mobility, electrification, connectivity, and autonomy.

TELLURIDERS TEAM CELEBRATES VICTORY ON THE REBELLE RALLY PODIUM

Relentless and Resilient Kia Rebelles Finish Second Overall in X-Cross Class

  • 2020 Telluride SX crossed the finish line after eight grueling days in the unforgiving California and Nevada deserts
  • Telluriders team prove their unstoppable spirit with several significant stage wins throughout rally

IRVINE, Calif., October 21, 2020 – Team Telluriders triumphantly crossed the finish line in the 2020 Telluride in the fifth annual Rebelle Rally, coming in overall second place in the X-Cross class. The powerhouse duo, made up of Alyssa Roenigk (driver) and Sabrina Howells (navigator), demonstrated their “Give it Everything” attitude, using their invaluable set of skills to make smart and calculated decisions tailored to the Telluride’s capability, ultimately allowing it to shine and finish the tough, off-road rally.

“This is a momentous achievement for Kia,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America. “Thanks to Alyssa and Sabrina’s grit in the arduous Rebelle Rally, they helped raise the Telluride’s credibility to new heights. Their huge accomplishment will go down in Kia history and we couldn’t be more proud of our team.”

From Lake Tahoe to the border of Mexico, Team Telluriders graciously handled whatever challenges the course threw at them. After facing tougher obstacles on rocky terrain at the start, Alyssa and Sabrina were keen on the Telluride’s strengths, using it to their advantage in the following days to result in several stage wins.

“Alyssa, Sabrina and the Telluride did such a great job in this year’s rally,” said Rebelle Rally founder, Emily Miller. We consider the vehicle as the third teammate, and all three handled the challenge with grace. They are an exceptional team.”

The team was able to clinch second place in the X-Cross class after excelling in the sand dunes, where the Telluride effortlessly floated over the sandy landscape to hit several checkpoints first before several competitors, taking the win for the most points scored on the final day of the competition.

“We are so proud of our overall performance and our comeback to take second in the X-Cross category at the 2020 Rebelle Rally,” said Alyssa and Sabrina. “On the final day, when we pulled up to  checkpoints deep in the Imperial Sand Dunes and saw the look on the faces of the 4x4 teams when we beat them there – that is a memory that will stick in our minds for a long time. The Telluride was an incredibly capable third teammate and we were grateful for the opportunity to take her on such an awesome adventure.”

Kia was a first-time competitor in the fifth annual Rebelle Rally, competing in the X-Cross Class with minimal modifications, including a skidplate to protect the fuel and oil pan area and all-terrain tires.

Alyssa Roenigk is a senior writer for ESPN and has committed countless acts of adventure in pursuit of a story. She has reported cover pieces for ESPN The Magazine, TV features for X Games and SportsCenter, and provided daily coverage at the Olympics, Grand Slams, Super Bowls, and the Women’s World Cup. The latest element of the multi-layered creative marketing campaign is a :30-second broadcast spot entitled, “Stunt Wars.” In the spot, professional drivers Brionna Lynch and Sean Graham drive their respective K5 GT sedans through a harrowing slalom of steel beams as they deftly maneuver hairpin turns and speed down straightaways before skidding to a photo finish. The spot’s voiceover states that when compared to the BMW 330i, the Kia K5 GT bests the German-engineered performance stalwart in both cornering and acceleration tests as conducted by AMCI1.

“The all-new K5 injects new life into the midsize sedan segment and it raises the bar on what consumers can expect from Kia,” said Russell Wager, director, marketing operations, Kia Motors America. “Previously, only German-engineered vehicles were lauded for their driving dynamics. Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors Corporation and Hyundai Mobis Co. each held extraordinary board meetings today to discuss the inauguration. All members of the boards unanimously endorsed the inauguration of Euisun Chung as the new Chairman of the Group.

Hyundai Motor Group will open a new chapter in its history under Euisun Chung’s leadership. Embracing the vision ‘Together for a Better Future,’ the Group will develop and acquire key technologies and capabilities to overcome market uncertainties, including COVID-19.

In his inauguration remarks, Euisun Chung presented the future direction of the Group as one focused on 'customers,' 'humanity,' 'future,' and 'social contribution.'

"All of our goals and efforts must be customer-centric. The first step to customer happiness is to enable them to focus on their own lives through perfect quality of our products and services," said the newly inaugurated Chairman Chung.

Over the years, Chung has stressed the customer-centric approach and customer satisfaction, and applied the concept more broadly to all of humanity.

IRVINE, Calif., October 6, 2020 – “Bring it!” said Alyssa Roenigk, “I’m beyond charged to get going.” Roenigk, a senior writer at sports media giant ESPN, will drive a 2020 Telluride SX in the fifth annual Rebelle Rally, an all-women, off-road navigational challenge held in the deserts of California and Nevada. Starting October 8 in Lake Tahoe, California, the rally will cover 1,500 miles in eight days before reaching the finish line, October 16, in the Imperial Sand Dunes, California. Roenigk’s navigator, Sabrina Howells, has a huge job guiding the team through the course using only old-fashioned paper maps and a compass—no GPS, no cell phones, no digital devices of any kind. “I can’t wait,” Howells said, “I really geek out on this stuff.”

Rebelle Rally founder and accomplished endurance racer, Emily Miller, created the event to provide women a chance to challenge themselves and each other and to prevail in conditions that most people avoid. “This is no desert cruise,” she said, “rally participants will face heat, sand, rocks and cold – everything the desert can throw at them. When it’s over, they’ll have accomplished something significant.

“Having Kia on board for this year’s rally is fantastic,” said Miller, “the Telluride is an excellent vehicle and the Telluriders team is formidable. We’ll be watching with interest.”

Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America & Kia Motors America is also looking forward to following the Telluriders team. “This is a significant event for Kia,” he said. “The Telluride is one of our most successful vehicles ever and the Rebelle Rally is a real test of its capability, durability and versatility. We expect it to perform extremely well and will be cheering on Alyssa and Sabrina as they take on this tough challenge.”

In addition to entering the Telluriders team in the rally, Kia Motors America is exclusive sponsor of the Live Show webcast to be broadcast live twice daily from locations along the rally route. Kia will also provide all rally participants with coffee and breakfast service in the Mojave backcountry, one of the rally’s most remote overnight stops.

“That will be killer,” said Rebelle Rally founder Emily Miller. “At that point in the rally, the women are exhausted and the last thing they want to think about in that location is how to get a hot cup of coffee and a hot breakfast. Kia delivering that to them will be huge.”

On October 8 at 8 a.m. PDT, Roenigk and Howells will participate in a virtual pre-rally interview. Other interview opportunities are also planned. Details to follow in a separate announcement.

Alyssa Roenigk is a senior writer for ESPN and has committed countless acts of adventure in pursuit of a story. KIA MOTORS AMERICA ANNOUNCES RECORD SEPTEMBER SALES

Brand Posts Best-Ever September and Best-Ever Quarterly Retail Sales Totals in Company History

IRVINE, Calif., October 1, 2020 – Kia Motors America announced September sales of 55,519 units marking both the best September retail sales and best quarterly retail sales performances since Kia entered the U.S. market in 1994.  September sales were led by the Telluride and Forte models with 8,829 and 7,643 units sold, respectively. Year-over-year, retail sales rose 35.3-percent to 53,513 vehicles, with additional September sales highlights including:

  • An all-time monthly sales record for Kia’s fastest turning model in company history – the Telluride SUV, with 8,829 units sold. On average, Telluride models stay on dealer lots for seven days
  • Best-ever September sales and best-ever monthly sales performance for the Sportage SUV
  • Record monthly sales for the Seltos SUV with 5,613 units sold
  • Highest monthly sales for the all-new K5 midsize sedan, with 5,763 units sold in September
