IRVINE, CA, July 29, 2022 –Kia America has earned three J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) awards, including one for the all-new EV6, Kia’s first dedicated EV and first step toward the brand’s transformative ‘Plan S’ global electrification strategy. The electric crossover took the top spot in the Compact SUV segment, while the Carnival MPV and K5 each won their respective segments. The announcement follows the Forte being crowned number one in the compact car segment in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

“As part of our recent brand transformation, we have repositioned ourselves as a symbol of challenge and innovation to develop products that rise above world-class,” said Steven Center, COO & EVP, Kia America. “These three APEAL awards reinforce how we’ve transformed ourselves to be a leader not only in automotive, but also in electrification and mobility given the high marks the EV6 has received since its arrival to market.”

The J.D. Power APEAL study measures new-vehicle owners’ overall satisfaction with their vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership. The study asks vehicle owners to consider 40 attributes divided into 10 experience groups. J.D. Power then aggregates the responses to generate an overall APEAL score on a 1,000-point scale.

Hyundai Motor and Kia to Develop Lunar Surface Exploration Mobility through Joint Multilateral Research Agreement

  • Hyundai Motor and Kia sign joint research agreements with six Korean research institutes to develop mobility solutions to explore the surface of the moon

SEOUL, July 27, 2022 – Hyundai Motor and Kia, who have pioneered endless possibilities for mobility expansion through innovative technologies such as robotics and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), are now expanding their vision beyond the bounds of Earth and into space.

Hyundai and Kia announced on July 27 that they signed joint research agreements with six Korean research institutes and formed a consultative body to develop mobility solutions to explore the surface of the moon. The announcement follows Korea’s successful launch of a domestically produced rocket in June.

"We have taken the first step towards transforming our vision for robotics and the concept of Metamobility into reality," said Yong Wha Kim, Executive Vice President, and Head of R&D Planning & Coordination Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia. "We will expand the scope of human movement experience beyond traditional means of transport and beyond the bounds of Earth to further contribute to the progress of humankind and help create a better future."

The signing ceremony held in Korea was attended by Chung Kook Park, President and Head of R&D Division of Hyundai Motor and Kia as well as top officials from the six research institutes: Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI); Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI); Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI); Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH); Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT); and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).

With collaboration expected to start as early as August, the consultative body will define the concept of lunar exploration mobility and major core technologies while developing and reviewing specific strategies and implementation measures to operate on the moon. Hyundai Motor and Kia will support the consultative body with their smart mobility technologies.

Under the multilateral research agreement, the participants from the private and government sectors will integrate their knowledge and capabilities to significantly advance their existing technologies and engineer new solutions for moon exploration mobility. Expertise will be brought to bear across numerous areas, including exploration equipment, software for mobility operation and remote communication functionality.

With no air, extreme temperatures and countless craters and coatings of lunar dust composed of sharp and abrasive particles, the moon’s surface is an exceptionally harsh environment. While it poses significant challenges to the development of surface exploration mobility, it also provides the ultimate proving ground and will deliver invaluable lessons for Hyundai and Kia to further accelerate the delivery of smart and sustainable mobility solutions on earth.

Hyundai and Kia have formed an internal consultative body with key personnel for the development and operation of lunar surface mobility. Resources will be brought to bear from Hyundai and Kia’s Robotics Lab in charge of robot development. Hyundai and Kia will also collaborate on software and hardware design and interpretation, space environment response technology, and special equipment for conducting lunar exploration missions.

The multilateral agreement to develop mobility for exploring the moon's surface represents a seminal moment in the history of Hyundai Motor and Kia that expands their vision for future mobility, including Robotics and AAM, to areas beyond the Earth. Hyundai and Kia also expect to secure proprietary technologies for future mobility businesses in the process of the new lunar exploration mobility robotics development.

In January, Hyundai Motor announced its robotics vision of ‘Metamobilty’ to help overcome the limitations of movement at CES 2022, which featured a video of Boston Dynamics’ robot, named ‘SPOT’, exploring outer space.

KIA AMERICA DONATES MORE THAN $1,800,000 TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS & SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS BENEFITING STUDENTS OF COLOR AND STUDENTS IN NEED

IRVINE, Calif., July 20, 2022 – Kia America today announced a significant expansion of the company’s commitment to education by making more than $1,800,000 in donations to fund scholarships for underrepresented and underprivileged students across the U.S.

“Kia believes education is the doorway to so many opportunities and we are very pleased to make college more financially attainable for these talented students and to inspire the next generation of young leaders,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia North America, Kia America.

In partnership with community organizations, Kia is helping to break down barriers, open doors, and provide access to scholarships for students of color in financial need. Community partner organizations include: the American Indian Services, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities, Korean American Scholarship Foundation, Rainbow Push Coalition, the United Negro College Fund and the automaker’s own, Great Unknowns Scholarship Fund.

“Kia’s support helps make it possible for African Americans and other underrepresented young people of color to have access to a college education which changes not only their life trajectory but also of those around them,” said Harry Fulmore, regional development director, workplace initiatives, United Negro College Fund (UNCF). “These scholarships ensure young people of color have access to competitive and fulfilling careers and are more involved in their communities. UNCF relies on corporate partners, like Kia, to support talented students to get to and through college. On behalf of UNCF, our 37 member historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) and the many students that have received scholarships, thank you!”

In total, more than $1,800,000 directed towards student scholarships will help more than 750 students achieve their academic and professional goals by making the pursuit of higher education more affordable for students as they pursue their academic dreams.

“As a former AIS scholarship recipient, I personally know firsthand how much of a difference Kia’s support will make in the lives of our students. Kia’s contribution to support the next generation of Native American leaders to excel in their academic and professional goals will not only extend to individual students but will change their communities for the better. KIA AMERICA ENLISTS NFT CHARACTERS TO STAR IN NEW CREATIVE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ALL-NEW 2023 KIA SOUL

New Ad Campaign Highlights Individuality of the Kia Soul and Features DASK NFTs; 30-Second Spot Features Special QR Code Viewers Scan to Claim Unique Kia Soul NFTs

IRVINE, Calif., July 15, 2022 – Kia America is launching a new creative broadcast campaign highlighting the individuality of the all-new, 2023 Kia Soul, one of the brand’s most iconic models. Debuting today, the 30-second spot features NFTs as talent and incorporates a unique QR code embedded into the creative. Powered by the Sweet NFT platform, when viewers scan the code with a smartphone, they can easily obtain one of 10,100 Kia-themed NFTs and it will be seamlessly deposited and stored in their own Sweet blockchain wallet.

Created by David&Goliath, Kia’s creative agency of record, the campaign titled “Built for Whoever You Are” includes a 30-second spot which follows three of the most popular DASK NFT characters as they hop in a new 2023 Kia Soul and drive through city streets. Stopping at a burger stand for a midnight snack, the NFTs receive more than a few doubletakes as they make their way through the drive-through and pick up their order. The NFTs continue up a winding canyon road, where they improvise an elegant outdoor table and enjoy both their food and the view, making their experience uniquely their own. The NFTs are part of the DASK collection of NFTs, high-quality, 3D computer-generated collectibles with more than 150 handcrafted features.

The 10,100 Kia NFTs include special edition generative DASK + Kia themed NFTs. Each of these limited supply digital collectibles draws inspiration from both the details of the new 2023 Kia Soul and the DASK NFTs featured in the spot.

KIA AMERICA PLUGS INTO ELECTRIFY EXPO 2022

IRVINE, Calif., July 14, 2022 – Kia America joins cutting-edge mobility companies in a series of five Electrify Expo events to advance electrification. The tour recently kicked off in Long Beach on June 3, where leaders in electrification came together to discuss the key challenges, insights, available research, and trends facing the mobility sector as it moves toward an all-electric future. The series continues July 23 - 24 in Seattle at Husky Stadium.  Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the all-new Kia EV6 first-hand.

BEST-EVER MONTHLY SALES FOR ALL-NEW KIA SPORTAGE IN JUNE

IRVINE, Calif., June 30, 2022 – Kia America today announced June sales of 65,142 units, an increase of 12-percent month-over-month. The all-new Sportage SUV posted all-time record monthly sales total of 14,153 units. June also marked the third consecutive month that sales of the Sportage SUV exceeded 10,000 units contributing to record high SUV ratio of overall sales of 71-percent. In addition, Kia captured its largest share of market ever beating the previous high achieved in July 2021.

“With our wide range of sedans, SUVs and electrified vehicles, Kia has the most well-balanced model line-up in the industry,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “The ongoing popularity of the EV6 and strong initial sales performance of the all-new Sportage SUV continue to push the brand on its upward trajectory. We are confident that Kia will continue to outpace the industry well into the third quarter and through the rest of the year.”

In addition to sales, June saw several significant announcements coming from the brand, including:

  • The 2022 Kia EV6 named among Wards 10 Best Interiors & UX award winners
  • The Forte taking top honors in the Compact Car segment; and the Carnival, K5, Rio, Sportage and Telluride models – each taking the number two spot in their respective categories – according to the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS)
