Kia Motors boosts healthcare in Ghana with opening of Green Light center

  • Fanteakwa center offers basic medical services for approx. 30,000
  • 11th Green Light Project from Kia: a global CSR program improving public health, education and vocational skills in developing countries
  • Center operated through a financially self-sufficient system; transferred to local healthcare department for self-management after five years

(SEOUL) November 8, 2019 – Kia Motors Corporation has inaugurated a new public healthcare center in Ghana, the latest step in the company’s ‘Green Light Project’ global corporate social responsibility program that seeks to improve public health, education and skills in developing countries. More than 100 guests including Sungsoo Kim, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea participated in the event for celebrating the extraordinary program.

The new Green Light Health Care Center in the Fanteakwa District in the Republic of Ghana is one of 12 Green Light Project schemes by Kia. The company’s Project has seen the inauguration of a range of public facilities in nine countries – eight in Africa and one in Asia – since 2012.

The new center will offer basic medical services to 30,000 people in Fanteakwa, a predominantly agricultural community with poor infrastructure and living conditions. In particular, it will help address the lack of public healthcare facilities offering maternal care and treatment for children.

Located adjacent to schools and a residential area, the center provides treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, maternal care and support, pediatric care, diagnosis and vaccination for HIV and malaria, and education for family planning. In addition, a mobile clinic in the form of a renovated Kia Bongo truck will expand the reach of the center to around a dozen neighboring towns in Fanteakwa District.

 “The ultimate objective of the Green Light Project is to go beyond infrastructural support, to create for the community a system of self-sufficient local healthcare,” said Kyehwan Roh, Team Leader of CSR Management Team at Kia Motors. “This strategy is one which Kia Motors will continue to reflect in its CSR activities throughout Africa and other parts of the world.”

Healthcare in Ghana’s Fanteakwa District

The 11th facility inaugurated under the Green Light Project in Africa, the Fanteakwa center will be operated by World Vision Ghana, a non-governmental humanitarian organization. Kia has paid to construct the healthcare center and will fund the operation for five years.

The key to the success of the Green Light Project in Africa is its integrated and innovative governance, including the participation of local government, financially self-sufficient management and civic involvement, and the eventual transfer of management to the local authority.

Ghana, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in West Africa, is beset by high infant and maternity mortality rates, as well as a series of other public health challenges identified under United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Fanteakwa suffers from particularly poor healthcare infrastructure, exacerbating these issues.

The Fanteakwa center is administered in line with the Ghanaian government’s locally tailored healthcare policy, and in cooperation with the Fanteakwa District government, which provides civil servants, doctors, nurses and other staff. The Ghana National Healthcare Quality Strategy (2017-21) targets the improvement of public health and fulfilment of healthcare needs under the auspices of local healthcare authorities.

Along with the Ghana National Healthcare Quality Strategy, another national healthcare policy, the Expanded Program of Immunization is harmonized into the operation of the Green Light Health Care Center in Ghana. Starting from the third year, various revenue streams will be planned by World Vision Ghana to enable the center’s financial independence, allowing the institute to be transferred eventually to the local health department.

The residents, for their part, will make efforts to run the healthcare center self-sufficiently, provide health-related education, and promote its programs throughout the local community.

Through the Green Light Project, Kia Motors has built schools, healthcare centers and vocational training centers in Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana since 2012. All 12 projects will be completed by 2023.

Kia’s Futuron Concept proposes an illuminating new design for an electric SUV coupe

  • Sleek, streamlined shape wrapped with ‘360-degree’ theme bodywork
  • New ‘tiger-face’ incorporates innovative Star Cloud light signature
  • Spacious cabin with flexible seating and Level 4 autonomy
  • Concept makes international debut at CIIE 2019

(SEOUL) November 5, 2019 – Kia Motors has revealed its new Futuron Concept, an illuminating all-wheel drive SUV coupe which proposes new designs for future electric vehicles.

The Futuron Concept represents the modern and confident image of a progressive electric SUV coupe envisioned by Kia. The Futuron name itself is a portmanteau of ‘future’ and ‘on’, hinting at the switched-on, electric nature of future SUV designs from the brand.

With a design based around the notion of dynamic purity, the Futuron Concept merges elegant proportions with pure shapes and surfaces. Its lightweight SUV coupe body incorporates a fully-electric all-wheel drive powertrain, wrapped in bold yet modern exterior surfaces, and with a flexible, high-tech interior.

The Futuron makes its public debut today at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, where it will be on display to the public until 10 November.

An electric SUV coupe with a ‘360-degree core’
The Kia Futuron Concept is built around a single, strong ‘360-degree’ design notable for its pure, smooth form devoid of ornament. The delicate diffusion of the body’s surfaces creates a series of taut, flowing shapes which twist, expand and contract around the body. The result is a sleek and streamlined shape, creating an aero-efficient profile.

The novel proportions of the car are immediately striking. Its low-profile SUV coupe body makes a strong statement of intent for Kia’s future cars, which will be confident, sporty and modern, yet also elegant. At 4,850 mm in length, 1,550 mm tall and with a 3,000 mm-long wheelbase, the Futuron’s elevated ground clearance is matched with a low, lean body to create a dynamic, confident posture.

The Futuron’s fully-electric powertrain makes this shape possible. A high-capacity battery is mounted low in the vehicle’s body, beneath the cabin floor, providing electrical energy to four powerful in-wheel electric motors. The elevated stance of the car is therefore matched with a low center of gravity and a cutting-edge e-AWD system which delivers lightning-fast responses to driver inputs.

A sports car on an SUV platform, combined with comfortable, lean-back seats, Futuron offers users a new type of interactive driving experience suitable for urban city environments. Various elements of the vehicle’s structure and design foster the important connection and interaction between car and driver.

The front fender flows backwards from the front of the hood before plunging into the cabin itself, establishing a connection between the driving seat and the road ahead. The concept’s roof is a diamond-shaped panoramic glasshouse which sits atop the 360-degree core, in the best traditions of UFO and flying saucer design. While flooding the cabin with natural light, it also extends down the bonnet to give drivers an unparalleled view ahead. The glasshouse also incorporates a network of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors capable of providing Level 4 autonomous driving features, enabling hands-off and eyes-off driving in most conditions.

Furthermore, the 360-degree theme is evident in the lighting that illuminates a sharp character line encircling the Futuron’s body. A playful and interactive new feature, this lighting responds to physical gestures and movements made outside the car, eliciting a close connection between vehicle and driver before they even set foot in the cabin.

The new ‘tiger face’ of Kia
The front of the Futuron features a new reinterpretation of Kia’s ‘tiger nose’ grille, a signature for Kia design now for over a decade. While maintaining the basic principle of the design – a clear outline with tabs in the middle – Kia’s designers have expanded the boundaries, widening the shape across the front of the car to create a restrained, yet elegant ‘tiger face’.

The newly-designed front of the car, like that of the Imagine by Kia Concept first revealed earlier in 2019, expresses a new design interpretation for Kia’s future electric vehicles.

With a wider ‘tiger face’ shape, the grille incorporates the Futuron’s headlamps, an innovative ‘Star Cloud’ design which gives the car a dazzling new night-time identity. The concept’s Star Cloud lighting not only highlights a new design form for the front of the car, but also embodies a new lighting concept for Kia, taking inspiration from nebulae in the night sky to create a geometric patchwork of matrix LED lighting. The Star Cloud is also incorporated into the rear of the car, displaying a distinct light signature to anyone following the Futuron.

Revealed for the first time in Shanghai, the Futuron also incorporates Chinese legend in the design and form of its new Star Cloud lighting. The Dragon Skin surface which covers the lighting area emulates the scaled armor that adorns Chinese dragons, both in mythology and modern-day cultural celebrations. The Star Cloud lighting incorporates a kinetic surface, enabling the car to alternate between daytime running lights and full-beam headlamps as the scales open and close.

Flexible and autonomous cabin space
The layout of the electric powertrain and incorporation of Level 4 autonomous driving systems has enabled the creation of a spacious and flexible cabin unlike any other vehicle on roads. The two front seats are created out of flexible materials and can offer an upright ‘driving’ position, or a reclined ‘rest’ position, similar to the flexibility afforded to first-class airline passengers. With the activation of the Futuron’s autonomous driving features, the two front seats recline as the steering wheel retracts. The ‘zero-gravity’ seating position this creates helps to reduce fatigue on long journeys.

The Futuron’s seamless interior also reflects its autonomous driving nature, with surfaces flowing uninterrupted from the dashboard and through the door panels. The doors feature the same Star Cloud lighting and scaled Dragon Skin motif found on the outside of the car, creating a glittering interactive ambient lighting system. The ventilation system is also housed behind Dragon Skin scales, which open and close to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the cabin.

One of the most prominent features of the cabin is the ‘cockpit’ area surrounding the driver. The graphical user interface (GUI) of the cockpit flows out of the driver-side door and wraps around the steering wheel in a seamless arc. This merges the instrument cluster directly with the audio-visual display at the center of the dashboard and is linked to the display integrated within the surface of the steering wheel itself. The GUI is operated by artificial intelligence technologies, displaying useful information about the car various autonomous driving, powertrain and navigation features to create a unique user experience. The apex of the cockpit arc sees the GUI lunge forward towards the road, creating an interactive Star Cloud light display at the very front of the cabin.

Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America Resolve Engine Litigation

Automakers Provide Assistance to Owners of Hyundai and Kia Vehicles Equipped with Theta II GDI Engines

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. Oct. 10, 2019 – Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America have entered into an agreement to resolve class action litigation with owners of certain vehicles equipped with Theta II gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. This agreement will provide various cash compensation options, lifetime warranties, free inspection and repair of the covered engines, and installation of a software update Hyundai and Kia introduced after the case was filed to enhance safety and address this engine’s performance. It also provides additional remedies to address engine concerns and assist customers with these vehicles.

Vehicles in the settlement include 2.3 million Hyundai (2011-2019 Sonata, 2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe, and 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019 Tucson) and 1.8 million Kia (2011-2019 model year Sportage, Sorento and Optima) vehicles with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter GDI engines.

Terms of the settlement include:

  • Cash reimbursement for certain past repairs and related expenses, such as towing and rental cars;
  • Cash compensation for certain past trade-ins, sales, and in lieu of certain repairs;
  • Free inspection and repair or replacement of damaged engines;
  • Lifetime warranty coverage for short block assembly repairs for original and subsequent owners;
  • Free installation of the knock sensor detection system software update;
  • Various goodwill compensation for customers inconvenienced by previous lengthy engine repair times, denied warranty coverage, and vehicle loss of value, among other provisions

“Reflecting our commitment to customer satisfaction, Hyundai is pleased to resolve this class action litigation,” said Jerry Flannery, chief legal officer, Hyundai Motor America. “This settlement acknowledges our sincere willingness to take care of customers impacted by issues with this engine’s performance and recognizes the many actions we are already taking to assist our customers.”

“As the latest demonstration of Kia’s commitment to vehicle quality and customer satisfaction, this resolution is the result of good-faith efforts among all parties to resolve owner concerns,” said John Yoon, executive vice president and general counsel, Kia Motors America.

“This settlement is a tremendous outcome for the settlement class and provides significant relief and reimbursements to Hyundai and Kia customers,” said Matthew Schelkopf of Sauder Schelkopf LLC.

“This settlement will put money in the pockets of car owners and lessors and increase safety and reliability,” stated Adam Gonnelli of The Sultzer Law Group P.C.

“This is a win for consumers and we look forward to presenting the settlement to the court and getting funds distributed to class members,” added Steve Berman of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP.

The Court is expected to review the proposed settlement for preliminary approval in October 2019. Assuming preliminary approval is granted, notices will be sent to individual class members pursuant to the terms of the settlement.

These class action lawsuits are In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation, Case No. 8:17-cv-00838, and Flaherty v. Hyundai Motor Company, et al., Case No. 18-cv-02223, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.  Plaintiffs in these two actions are represented by Matthew D. Schelkopf of Sauder Schelkopf, Adam Gonnelli of The Sultzer Law Group, Bonner Walsh of Walsh PLLC, and Steve Berman of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP.

Knock Sensor Detection System Software Update

Each of these vehicles is part of an ongoing product improvement campaign to install an engine monitoring technology called a knock sensor detection system. The technology uses software innovations and leverages existing engine sensors to continuously monitor for symptoms that may precede an engine failure. It is installed free of charge for all vehicles in the settlement by Hyundai and Kia dealers.

The knock sensor detection system software continuously monitors engine vibrations for unusual dynamic patterns that develop as an engine connecting rod bearing wears abnormally in a way that could later cause engine seizure. If vibrations caused by bearing wear start to occur, the malfunction indicator lamp will blink continuously and the vehicle will be placed in a temporary engine protection mode with reduced power and acceleration. In this temporary mode, drivers maintain full control of the vehicle as brakes, steering and safety devices such as airbags remain operational.

The vehicle can continue to be operated for a limited time in engine protection mode to enable the customer to safely drive it to a dealer for inspection and repair, but acceleration will be slower, with a reduced maximum speed of approximately 60 to 65 mph and a limited engine speed of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 rpm. The knock sensor technology has been evaluated by an independent, leading engineering and scientific consulting firm. When tested using a fleet of vehicles specifically prepared to test the knock sensor technology, the knock sensor system successfully detected failing connecting rod bearings and responded with activation of the engine protection mode.
