TELLURIDE IS CAR AND DRIVER 10BEST FOR 2020

Kia’s Bold and Biggest-Ever SUV Wows Editors with its Blend of Utility, Design and Driving Refinement

  • Industry-leading automotive publication picks new Kia as one of 2020’s best SUVs
  • “The Telluride is rare in how good it is,” says editor-in-chief Sharon Silke Carty

LOS ANGELES, November 21, 2019 — The Kia Telluride has been named to Car and Driver’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs list, which recognizes 2020’s best trucks and SUVs on the market. The renowned automotive publication selected the award-winning three-row sport utility for this prestigious honor based on its design, equipment, performance and road manners.

“The Telluride is rare in how good it is,” says Sharon Silke Carty, Car and Driver editor-in-chief. “It spoils passengers with features, is quiet, responsive and smooth. It stands out in the crowded three-row SUV market.”

For the first time, Car and Driver combined 10Best Cars and 10Best Trucks and SUVs into a single 10Best for 2020. The Telluride competed against 93 other vehicles—cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans—to earn its spot on the list of ten vehicles. The primary criteria includes value, driving dynamics, and mission fulfillment. Nominees include all-new or significantly updated vehicles with a base price below $90,000, along with last year’s winners.

“This is an absolute honor,” says Michael Cole, president, Kia Motors America. “Car and Driver editors are widely respected for their automotive acumen and ability to bellwether the industry. A 10Best rating is a gold standard.”

KIA TELLURIDE NAMED “SUV OF TEXAS” BY THE TEXAS AUTO WRITERS ASSOCIATION

Kia’s Biggest and Boldest Utility Vehicle Takes Top Honors at the 2019 TAWA Truck Rodeo

The Kia Telluride went even bigger and bolder at the 2019 Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) Truck Rodeo, taking home the overall category-winning title of “SUV of Texas”.  In addition to the top honor, Telluride was also named the “Mid-Size SUV of Texas.”

The annual competition sees more than 60 TAWA automotive journalist members from across the U.S. converge for a two-day evaluation of the industry’s best trucks, SUVs and CUVs. These impressive wins are a follow up to Telluride being named the “SUV of Texas” and “Mid-Size SUV” category winner at TAWA’s Auto Roundup event in April 2019.  Results for both events are based on assessments of the TAWA journalist members who attended the events and evaluated participating vehicles across a wide variety of criteria.

“Taking the two top prizes at the TAWA Truck Rodeo is further evidence that Kia ’gave it everything’ when it comes to Telluride,” said Michael Cole, president, Kia Motors America. “Texans love their SUVs and the TAWA members are a discerning group, especially when it comes to utility vehicles. Taking the ‘SUV of Texas’ prize is a true honor for the Kia brand.”

After driving each vehicle on predetermined off-road and street courses, TAWA members voted on the top vehicles in a variety of categories. Journalists were encouraged to drive the vehicles as they would if they were simulating their own day-to-day driving conditions.

More information on the 2019 TAWA Auto Round-Up, including the full list of participating vehicles, can be found at www.texasautowriters.org.

KIA UNLEASHES UNTAMED SELTOS X-LINE CONCEPTS AT 2019 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW

Aggressive Concepts Are Sneak Peeks Into Future of the All-New 2021 Seltos SUV

  • Trail Attack Concept takes Seltos capability out of the suburbs and into parts unknown
  • Urban Concept eagerly chews up the most intimidating potholes, taking on anything the mean streets can dish out

LOS ANGELES, November 20, 2019 – Moments after unveiling the all-new 2021 Seltos SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia Motors America (KMA) let two exciting Seltos concepts off their leash. Flanking their production counterpart on-stage, the Seltos X-Line Trail Attack Concept and Seltos X-Line Urban Concept present unique approaches to pump up capability while remaining firmly entrenched in reality. Conceived and penned at Kia Design Center America, and built by Zero to 60 Designs of Corona, CA, the concepts are meant to further convey the active lifestyles Seltos owners will embrace.

“The Seltos is an exciting addition Kia’s tough and rugged lineup of Kia SUVs,” said Michael Cole, president, KMA. “But the Kia brand is always looking toward the future and we are eager to show what may wait just around the corner. These new concepts are meant to get the creative juices flowing and illustrate what the ultimate Seltos could be.”

While the production Seltos is planned to go on-sale in the first quarter of 2020, there are currently no plans to produce either concept. But it is worthy to mention that Kia said the same about the GT Concept and the Telluride Concept, both of which eventually found their way onto driveways across America in the form of the Stinger sport sedan and Telluride SUV.

Seltos X-Line Trail Attack Concept

Small SUVs are perfect for city slickers. But even urbanites like to occasionally take the road less traveled and that’s what the Trail Attack Concept is all about. The custom two-tone paint scheme evokes a stirring desert sunset and the eight ultra-bright Hella auxiliary lights mounted on the front bumper and roof light up the night once the sun dips below the dunes.

Equipped with electronic AWD, the center differential lock equally distributes power between the front and rear axles and the custom 2-inch lift kit raises ground clearance to 9.2-inches. Knobby off-road tires with 17x8–inch custom painted alloy wheels help improve off-road traction and security. A hidden winch behind the front valance can assist in particularly tough off-road situations, while a custom fabricated roof rack means the Trail Attack Concept never runs out of utility.

Powered by an unaltered 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Trail Attack Concept is good for 175-horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque through a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission. Behind the heavily tinted windows, the Trail Attack Concept retains its purposeful and refined production interior.

Seltos X-Line Urban Concept

The city can often feel as rough and tumble as the most challenging off-road trail and the Urban Concept is the perfect companion for such mean streets. Inspired by the imposing glass and steel skyscrapers of New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Urban Concept’s custom slate gray paint scheme is highlighted by a gloss-black roof panel for a splash of stark modernity.

Fear of potholes become a thing of the past with the custom 2-inch lift, which also helps to raise the seating position and offer a better vantage point around the snarled city traffic all too common these days. Electronically controlled AWD with torque vectoring puts power through the 17x8-inch alloy wheels where it’s needed most: to the tire with optimum traction. Resting below the custom hood complete with integrated intake is the same powerplant found in the Trail Attack Concept, offering authoritative acceleration away from stoplights… instead of scorpions.

Up top, four high-powered Hella auxiliary lights cut through low-hanging city fog and the custom fabricated roof rack will hold all the extra stuff any apartment dweller can amass. Already packed with high-tech features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, and backup camera, the interior has been left to already impressive production standards.

ALL-NEW 2021 KIA SELTOS BLENDS RUGGEDNESS AND REFINEMENT IN ENTRY SUV SEGMENT

Adventure-Ready Crossover Joins Kia’s Bold Utility Lineup

  • Combines modern styling and sophistication with well-engineered capability
  • Right-sized; slots between iconic Soul and sleek Sportage
  • Powered by efficient 2.0-liter or spirited 1.6-liter Turbo four-cylinder engines
  • Available all-wheel drive with torque vectoring
  • Well-appointed interior laden with smart technology to enhance the on-road experience harkens to Telluride levels of refinement

LOS ANGELES, November 20, 2019 – Rugged, refined and right-sized, the all-new Seltos energizes the Entry SUV segment with a personality all its own.  As a utility vehicle with an abundance of attitude, the Seltos arrives in the U.S. with modern styling and a penchant for adventure, whether that means everyday driving around town or in the wilderness on weekends.  Complementing Kia’s robust SUV lineup, and following on the heels of the Telluride, the Seltos slots between the popular Soul and Sportage models, providing a comfortable and tech-savvy cabin, a choice of two well-tested engines include a spirited 175-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo, and an available all-wheel drive system1 with torque vectoring control and a lock mode to handle more severe road conditions. It is available in five trims: LX, EX, S 2.0L, S 1.6T and SX.  Looking at all it has to offer, it’s no wonder the 2021 Kia Seltos is poised and ready to become a true contender in one of the fastest growing segments in the industry when it goes on-sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2020.  While complete pricing will be available closer to the Seltos’ on-sale date, the LX AWD will have a starting price below $22,000 and the S FWD will have a similar starting price.

Distinctive Design
Similar to Telluride’s design theme, the Seltos is a marriage of bold design and delicate details, and stands apart from rivals with its strong, upright stance.  The tall front end and 7.2-inch ground clearance translate to a tough attitude and an adventurous spirit.  Its assertive presence is spearheaded by Kia’s signature tiger nose grille that includes unexpected diamond-like detail.  Chiseled surfaces and well-drawn lines lead back to a distinctive profile highlighted by a chrome beltline (available on S, EX and SX) that melds into the D-pillar for a streamlined appearance.  And the optional two-tone roof gives Seltos an added layer of coolness and character.  Other key design cues include:

  • Long wheelbase and hood for a robust and substantial look
  • Harmonized grille and headlamp design featuring full LED “Beat” lighting for a modern appearance (SX)
  • Aggressive lower front bumper design provides sharper approach angle for adventurous driving
  • Front and rear skid plates and black wheel arch cladding reference off-road abilities
  • Sleek and tapering greenhouse conveys athleticism
  • Eye-catching red wheel center caps hint at performance
  • Tailgate garnish connects rear lamps to create a sense of width and stability
  • Sculpted dual exhaust outlets highlight power and are connected by chrome trim to emphasize  premium status
  • Eye-catching 17-, and 18-inch alloy wheels give Seltos an up-level appearance and stance befitting its bold personality

The Seltos’ interior design continues the theme of upscale adventure:

  • A cabin crafted with meticulous attention to detail helps Seltos punch above its weight class
  • Wide instrument panel has a high-tech feel with an asymmetrical design that skews toward the driver
  • Spacious and versatile cabin with generous hip, shoulder, leg and head room in both rows, offering more interior volume than most rivals
  • An abundance of cargo space that can be expanded by lowering the adjustable luggage board

INNER SPACE - SELTOS’ HERCULEAN INTERIOR

The Seltos delivers a tremendous amount of roominess and comfort.  Even back seat passengers will get to stretch out thanks to the rear reclining feature.  And while they’re kicked back and relaxing, you can lower the rear luggage board to increase cargo space.  When there’s nobody in the back and you need some extra room for larger items, fold the rear seat down and lift the luggage board for a flat loading surface allowing expansive cargo volume.  Whichever way you fold it, split it or lift it, the Seltos is a leader in its class when it comes to space and versatility.

Adventure in Style
The Seltos outclasses its class with an upscale look and feel throughout its well-appointed cabin.  Whether it’s a quick trip around town or a longer sojourn “into the wild,” owner and occupants will enjoy premium details and convenience features such as:

  • Clean and sophisticated gauge cluster – 3.5”-in. OLED (LX, S, EX) and 7-in. Supervision (SX)
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob (S, EX, SX)
  • Sliding front console cover (S, EX, SX)
  • Fractal pattern Bose2 speakers and six sophisticated color themes echo the sound connected mood lighting found in the iconic Soul.  The mood light changes color and intensity based on volume level (SX).
  • Rear air vent and USB charging port for convenience of backseat passengers  (EX and SX)
  • Two-step reclining rear seat functionality enhances second row comfort level (standard on all trims)

Well-Engineered Machine
Seltos is engineered to deliver a comfortable, capable and confidence-inspiring experience for both driver and passengers.  A number of elements contribute to Seltos’ composed ride and lively driving performance:

  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder MPI engine producing 146 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, managed by an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) (LX, S and EX)
  • 1.6-liter Turbo GDI engine outputting 175 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) (S and SX)
  • MacPherson strut front suspension; Coupled Torsion Beam Axle (CTBA) rear suspension on front-wheel drive models and Multi-link rear suspension on all-wheel drive models
  • Strong and rigid body composed of 61 percent advanced high-strength steel and further enhanced with 374 feet of structural adhesives
  • Choice of three drive modes – Normal, Eco, Sport – each using specific settings for powertrain, drivetrain and steering mapping to provide the desired driving experience
  • Available active on-demand all-wheel drive1 (AWD) system, similar in technological design to the award-winning Telluride, provides all-weather capabilities and enhanced driving performance with a center locking differential that splits power equally between the front and rear wheels for more severe environments.  The AWD system also makes use of torque vectoring, which increases traction by predicting which wheel will best utilize power in a given on-road situation.  This enhances stability in corners and gives the vehicle more connection to the road.

Teeming with Technology — Connectivity, Safety, Driver Assistance
Seltos is packed with technology features, including the“Kia Drive Wise” suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems as well as a wide array of standard and optional equipment.  Tech highlights include:

  • Available 10.25-inch high-resolution color touchscreen3 with satellite radio, UVO telematics, navigation and split-screen display.
  • First time in Kia available 8-speaker Bose2 premium sound system
  • Apple CarPlay4 and Android Auto5
  • Available wireless smartphone charging6
  • Available three total USB charging ports
  • Available multi-Bluetooth7 wireless connectivity allows two phones to connect simultaneously
  • Available “Kia Drive Wise” Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS):8
    • Blind Spot Collision Warning (BCW): Under certain conditions, can detect vehicles traveling in the next lane.  When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, an icon flashes in the mirror.  A chime will sound if the turn signal is on.

    • Driver Attention Warning (DAW)9: Senses inattentive driving patterns and sends an audible/visual warning to alert the driver.
    • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection (FCA): Assists the driver in braking to help prevent a collision or lessen the effects in certain conditions if a vehicle or pedestrian is detected in front.
    • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)10: Uses federal highway speed limit information from the navigation system and, under certain conditions, will automatically adjust speed to be within the posted speed limit and maintain distance with the vehicle detected in front.
    • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS): Designed to alert the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is about to depart from its current lane without a turn signal.

    • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist (RCCA): Uses BCW technology to help detect approaching cross traffic when in reverse.  When approaching cross traffic is detected, the system alerts the driver and applies brakes.
    • Rear Occupant Alert11: Designed to provide a message in the instrument cluster for the driver to “Check rear seats” in order to help prevent leaving the vehicle with a rear passenger left inside; the message appears when the driver door is opened after a rear passenger door has been opened and closed.

    • In-Vehicle Notification Center: Features a unique head unit inbox reserved for important notifications regarding maintenance, warranty, and safety recall information if ever needed.
    • Next Generation Connected Notifications: Sends alerts in case of vehicle malfunction regarding light bulb status on headlights or taillights, 12V battery status and low fuel level.
    • Engine Idle Notification and Automatic Engine Shut Off:  Sends an alert if the vehicle has been idling for 10 minutes and turns it off automatically.

2020 KIA TELLURIDE EARNS TWO TOP HONORS IN KELLEY BLUE BOOK’S BEST BUY AWARDS

Kia’s Flagship SUV Wins Best New Model and Best 3-Row Midsize SUV

  • Telluride’s style, driving experience, innovation and value helped make it a dual winner
  • Prestigious award recognizes the top new model-year vehicles available in the U.S. market across 17 categories

IRVINE, Calif., November 20, 2019 – The Kia Telluride has been named a winner in two categories of Kelley Blue Book’s 2020 Best Buy Awards. Kia’s big and bold utility vehicle earned the top spot in both the Best New Model and 3-Row Midsize SUV segments after a yearlong process of head-to-head testing, evaluation and data analysis of hundreds of 2020 model-year vehicles.

“With more than 45,000 units sold since the Telluride’s launch earlier this year, our largest SUV ever has been on a winning streak, impressing journalists and consumers alike with its quality and value,” said Michael Cole, president, Kia Motors America. “We know that today’s buyers put their trust in the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards and are honored to be recognized for giving it everything to bring the Telluride to life.”

Imagined, designed and assembled in the U.S., the Telluride delivers a confidence-inspiring driving experience that opens the door to exploration. With a boxy exterior that is complemented by luxurious interior accents such as available Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery and an available heated steering wheel, Kia’s mid-size SUV offers comfort, utility and convenience that will excite both drivers and passengers. For the 2020 model year, the Telluride can be outfitted with an array of advanced technology and safety systems1 including standard Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist Rear, Driver Attention Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Occupant Alert2, Driver Talk, Quiet Mode and more.

“The Telluride impressed everyone on the editorial team with its eye-catching styling, notable driving dynamics, all-inclusive list of standard features, and well-integrated safety technology,” said Michael Harley, executive editor for Kelley Blue Book. “Even more striking is the crossover’s extremely attractive price, which alludes that ‘value’ is the Telluride’s middle name.”

To select the winners of the Best Buy Awards, Kelley Blue Book evaluated more than 300 new models available for 2020, with a specific emphasis on the best combination of quality, safety, comfort, driving dynamics, dependability, low ownership costs and affordability. As part of their decision-making process, Kelley Blue Book’s experts also analyze a wide array of vehicle-related data, including vehicle pricing, 5-Year Cost to Own data, consumer reviews and ratings, and vehicle sales information. These prestigious awards provide a helpful service by allowing shoppers to narrow their new-car consideration list and purchase a new vehicle with confidence.

Congratulations to Kia and the Telluride team.”

With a more than 20-year history, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year award is one of the most sought-after honors by global automotive manufacturers. SUV of the Year judges are comprised of MotorTrend staff as well as two guest judges, Johan de Nysschen, former head of Audi of America, Infiniti Motor Co., and Cadillac division and Tom Gale, former head of Chrysler design. Vehicles are evaluated against six key criteria: safety, efficiency, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence and performance of intended function to determine the finalists and ultimately, the winners.

Kia Motors celebrates decade of manufacturing in Georgia

  • KMMG, Kia Motors’ first North American manufacturing plant, has created more than 15,000 jobs and produced more than three million vehicles
  • Governor Brian Kemp and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice Chairman Euisun Chung attend ceremony to mark anniversary
  • Kia continues efforts to provide world’s best smart mobility services alongside expanding range of efficient, high-quality vehicles

(SEOUL) November 19, 2019 – Kia Motors Corporation today celebrated its 10th anniversary of vehicle production in West Point, Georgia, U.S.A. The facility, named Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG), was the company’s first manufacturing hub to open in North America. It has so far helped create more than 15,000 local jobs and produced more than three million vehicles.

KMMG became the Korean firm’s third overseas manufacturing plant when it held its ground-breaking ceremony in October 2006, and underwent over three years of construction before producing its first vehicle, a Sorento, in November 2009. The 2,200-acre site has played a key role in strengthening Kia’s presence in the U.S. market ever since, and currently has a production capacity of 340,000 vehicles per year.

Most of the output at KMMG is for the brand’s popular SUV models, the Telluride and Sorento, as well as the Optima mid-size sedan. Kia Motors plans to increase KMMG’s annual production target for the Telluride to 80,000 units from the current 60,000.

Euisun Chung, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, who was president of Kia Motors Corporation when it made the decision to locate in Georgia, congratulated KMMG employees and local partners at a special event to mark the anniversary. He also thanked state and local officials for their unwavering support over the past decade.

“The KMMG team members are known around the world for their output and dedication,” said EVC Chung. “The support we have received since the very beginning – from state and local governments, civic organizations and various partners – has been critical to the success of Kia’s first American plant. Without a doubt, Georgia and the larger U.S. market will be the crown jewel of our global operations.”

Commenting on the current rapid rate of change in the global automotive industry, EVC Chung said Hyundai Motor Group and Kia Motors would become paradigm-shifters and trailblazers, and emphasized that KMMG will continue to play an important part of the company’s future strategy. “We will offer the world’s best smart mobility services, expanding our horizons beyond vehicle production,” he added. “In the future we will manufacture not only cars but also personal air vehicles and robots, as well as offer all related services.”

Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp, who attended the celebratory event together with EVC Chung, lauded a successful first decade of production and a promising future for Kia in West Point.

“It was an honor to celebrate today’s milestone and the many accomplishments of the Kia team during its first 10 years of production here in Georgia,” said Governor Kemp. “We are so proud that Kia chose to make our state its home, and I commend Executive Vice Chairman Chung and the entire KMMG team for driving growth in Georgia while continuing to be industry leaders in safety and quality.”

In line with Hyundai Motor Group’s strategy to become a smart mobility solutions provider, Kia Motors is preparing itself for the rapidly changing automotive landscape. The company recently announced with affiliate Hyundai Motor Company that it will establish an autonomous driving joint venture with Aptiv in the U.S. to lead the future of autonomous driving.

Kia Motors was named the best mass market brand by J.D. Power Initial Quality Study in 2019 for the fifth consecutive year.  The vehicles produced at KMMG have ranked among the best in the industry, having won multiple segment awards in its first decade of production.

Hyundai Motor Group Launches Future Mobility Venture MoceanLab

  • MoceanLab to provide mobility services in Los Angeles starting with its pilot carshare service, Mocean Carshare

November 14, 2019 – Hyundai Motor Group today established MoceanLab, a mobility service venture, as part of the Group’s larger initiative to create a sustainable, connected future.

MoceanLab will provide mobility services in the City of Los Angeles, and expand its services to autonomous ridesharing, shuttling, multimodal transportation, and personal mobility.

After a comprehensive thorough review, Hyundai Motor Group identified Los Angeles as the city to launch the MoceanLab. The opportunities posed by LA’s large and diverse population, challenges with traffic congestion, and demonstrated commitments to transportation innovation and sustainability, including LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s initiatives and leadership, made it the ideal city for MoceanLab. Hyundai Motor Group plans to explore and integrate new mobility innovations – such as micromobility and multimodal transportation – and ensure the effectiveness and growth of mobility services throughout LA.

“Hyundai Motor Group will introduce innovative mobility platforms and demonstrate diverse mobility services in Los Angeles,” said Kyounglim Yun, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motor Group. “More and more customers, including citizens of LA and tourists, will greatly benefit from MoceanLab as its service gradually covers a larger area of LA and diversify its mobility services. With such efforts, Hyundai Motor Group aims to lead the technology development for clean mobility.”

Mocean Carshare, a pilot program from MoceanLab, will be a part of the City of Los Angeles’ carsharing permit pilot program offered by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA METRO). The Group will utilize up to 20 Hyundai IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles for the pilot program, set to start at the end of 2019. The goal is to transition the fleet to fully electric vehicles with a gradual expansion of a combined 300 vehicles of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation.

MoceanLab will further expand beyond the initial carsharing pilot program. In anticipation of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, MoceanLab aims to alleviate traffic and increase convenience. Ultimately connecting customers to mass transit options and reduce traffic congestion around the city. This includes services offering autonomous ridesharing, shuttling, multimodal transportation, and personal mobility.

MoceanLab displayed its carsharing and shuttle technology at the 2019 CoMotion LA event. CoMotion LA has given the world a glimpse of the new urban future, presented by leading technologists, transport operators, government officials and venture capitalists since 2017. The event was attended by over 2000 major government and industry officials including Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Nina Hachigian, Deputy Mayor of International Affairs of LA.

Hyundai Motor Group is continuing its developments in mobility services through active establishments of joint ventures and partnerships. In September, the Group formed a joint venture with Aptiv, focused on the efficient development of driverless systems using world-leading autonomous technology. Hyundai this month also began testing BotRide, a fleet of self-driving KONA Electric SUVs in Irvine, California in collaboration with Pony.ai and Via.

About Hyundai Motor Group

Hyundai Motor Group is a global corporation that has created a value chain based on automobiles, steel, and construction and includes logistics, finance, IT and service. With about 250,000 employees worldwide, the Group’s automobile brands include Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp and Genesis. KIA MOTORS INTRODUCES “THE GREAT UNKNOWNS” FRESHMAN CLASS

Great Unknowns Scholarship Recipients Embody Kia’s “Give It Everything” Spirit

  • Instead of enlisting high-priced talent for the 2019 Super Bowl ad, Kia used the money to fund The Great Unknowns Scholarship
  • To learn more about the scholarship recipients, click here

Following through on the promise to help young people in need get a foothold in higher education, today Kia Motors America proudly recognizes the recipients of The Great Unknowns Scholarship. Comprised of 16 college students from across the U.S., the scholarship winners were chosen based on financial need, academic performance and the demonstrable ways they made a difference by giving it everything within their local schools and communities.

The Great Unknowns Scholarship was created to identify students who embody Kia’s “Give It Everything” spirit and help them pursue their academic goals. The call for entries was part of Kia’s 360-degree “Give It Everything” marketing campaign which began with the 2019 Super Bowl spot of the same name, created by Kia’s agency of record David&Goliath.

“Earlier this year, instead of using a high-priced celebrity in our Super Bowl ad, Kia chose to repurpose that money to discover and reward young Americans who embody our ‘Give It Everything’ philosophy,” said Michael Cole, president, Kia Motors America. “We are honored to help these talented and ambitious students further their education and we’re excited to see what their futures hold.”

Recipients of The Great Unknowns Scholarship are enrolled at a variety of colleges and universities, including Harvard University; University of Alabama, Huntsville; New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; University of Texas, San Antonio; Duke University; and the University of Pennsylvania. Fittingly, fields of study range from economics and computer science to public policy, neuroscience and aerospace engineering.  A video introducing the students and how they “Give It Everything” can be found here and more information on The Great Unknowns Scholarship program and the application process can be found at www.thegreatunknowns.org.

Kia Motors boosts healthcare in Ghana with opening of Green Light center

  • Fanteakwa center offers basic medical services for approx. 30,000
  • 11th Green Light Project from Kia: a global CSR program improving public health, education and vocational skills in developing countries
  • Center operated through a financially self-sufficient system; transferred to local healthcare department for self-management after five years

(SEOUL) November 8, 2019 – Kia Motors Corporation has inaugurated a new public healthcare center in Ghana, the latest step in the company’s ‘Green Light Project’ global corporate social responsibility program that seeks to improve public health, education and skills in developing countries. More than 100 guests including Sungsoo Kim, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea participated in the event for celebrating the extraordinary program.

The new Green Light Health Care Center in the Fanteakwa District in the Republic of Ghana is one of 12 Green Light Project schemes by Kia. The company’s Project has seen the inauguration of a range of public facilities in nine countries – eight in Africa and one in Asia – since 2012.

The new center will offer basic medical services to 30,000 people in Fanteakwa, a predominantly agricultural community with poor infrastructure and living conditions. In particular, it will help address the lack of public healthcare facilities offering maternal care and treatment for children.

Located adjacent to schools and a residential area, the center provides treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, maternal care and support, pediatric care, diagnosis and vaccination for HIV and malaria, and education for family planning. In addition, a mobile clinic in the form of a renovated Kia Bongo truck will expand the reach of the center to around a dozen neighboring towns in Fanteakwa District.

“The ultimate objective of the Green Light Project is to go beyond infrastructural support, to create for the community a system of self-sufficient local healthcare,” said Kyehwan Roh, Team Leader of CSR Management Team at Kia Motors. “This strategy is one which Kia Motors will continue to reflect in its CSR activities throughout Africa and other parts of the world.”

Healthcare in Ghana’s Fanteakwa District

The 11th facility inaugurated under the Green Light Project in Africa, the Fanteakwa center will be operated by World Vision Ghana, a non-governmental humanitarian organization. Kia has paid to construct the healthcare center and will fund the operation for five years.

The key to the success of the Green Light Project in Africa is its integrated and innovative governance, including the participation of local government, financially self-sufficient management and civic involvement, and the eventual transfer of management to the local authority.

Ghana, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in West Africa, is beset by high infant and maternity mortality rates, as well as a series of other public health challenges identified under United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Fanteakwa suffers from particularly poor healthcare infrastructure, exacerbating these issues.

The Fanteakwa center is administered in line with the Ghanaian government’s locally tailored healthcare policy, and in cooperation with the Fanteakwa District government, which provides civil servants, doctors, nurses and other staff. The Ghana National Healthcare Quality Strategy (2017-21) targets the improvement of public health and fulfilment of healthcare needs under the auspices of local healthcare authorities.

Along with the Ghana National Healthcare Quality Strategy, another national healthcare policy, the Expanded Program of Immunization is harmonized into the operation of the Green Light Health Care Center in Ghana. Starting from the third year, various revenue streams will be planned by World Vision Ghana to enable the center’s financial independence, allowing the institute to be transferred eventually to the local health department.

The residents, for their part, will make efforts to run the healthcare center self-sufficiently, provide health-related education, and promote its programs throughout the local community.

Through the Green Light Project, Kia Motors has built schools, healthcare centers and vocational training centers in Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana since 2012. All 12 projects will be completed by 2023.

The Futuron makes its public debut today at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, where it will be on display to the public until 10 November.

An electric SUV coupe with a ‘360-degree core’
The Kia Futuron Concept is built around a single, strong ‘360-degree’ design notable for its pure, smooth form devoid of ornament. The delicate diffusion of the body’s surfaces creates a series of taut, flowing shapes which twist, expand and contract around the body. The result is a sleek and streamlined shape, creating an aero-efficient profile.

The novel proportions of the car are immediately striking. Its low-profile SUV coupe body makes a strong statement of intent for Kia’s future cars, which will be confident, sporty and modern, yet also elegant. At 4,850 mm in length, 1,550 mm tall and with a 3,000 mm-long wheelbase, the Futuron’s elevated ground clearance is matched with a low, lean body to create a dynamic, confident posture.

The Futuron’s fully-electric powertrain makes this shape possible. A high-capacity battery is mounted low in the vehicle’s body, beneath the cabin floor, providing electrical energy to four powerful in-wheel electric motors. The elevated stance of the car is therefore matched with a low center of gravity and a cutting-edge e-AWD system which delivers lightning-fast responses to driver inputs.

A sports car on an SUV platform, combined with comfortable, lean-back seats, Futuron offers users a new type of interactive driving experience suitable for urban city environments. Various elements of the vehicle’s structure and design foster the important connection and interaction between car and driver.

The front fender flows backwards from the front of the hood before plunging into the cabin itself, establishing a connection between the driving seat and the road ahead. The concept’s roof is a diamond-shaped panoramic glasshouse which sits atop the 360-degree core, in the best traditions of UFO and flying saucer design. While flooding the cabin with natural light, it also extends down the bonnet to give drivers an unparalleled view ahead. The glasshouse also incorporates a network of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors capable of providing Level 4 autonomous driving features, enabling hands-off and eyes-off driving in most conditions.

Furthermore, the 360-degree theme is evident in the lighting that illuminates a sharp character line encircling the Futuron’s body. A playful and interactive new feature, this lighting responds to physical gestures and movements made outside the car, eliciting a close connection between vehicle and driver before they even set foot in the cabin.

The new ‘tiger face’ of Kia
The front of the Futuron features a new reinterpretation of Kia’s ‘tiger nose’ grille, a signature for Kia design now for over a decade. While maintaining the basic principle of the design – a clear outline with tabs in the middle – Kia’s designers have expanded the boundaries, widening the shape across the front of the car to create a restrained, yet elegant ‘tiger face’.

The newly-designed front of the car, like that of the Imagine by Kia Concept first revealed earlier in 2019, expresses a new design interpretation for Kia’s future electric vehicles.

With a wider ‘tiger face’ shape, the grille incorporates the Futuron’s headlamps, an innovative ‘Star Cloud’ design which gives the car a dazzling new night-time identity. The concept’s Star Cloud lighting not only highlights a new design form for the front of the car, but also embodies a new lighting concept for Kia, taking inspiration from nebulae in the night sky to create a geometric patchwork of matrix LED lighting. The Star Cloud is also incorporated into the rear of the car, displaying a distinct light signature to anyone following the Futuron.

Revealed for the first time in Shanghai, the Futuron also incorporates Chinese legend in the design and form of its new Star Cloud lighting. The Dragon Skin surface which covers the lighting area emulates the scaled armor that adorns Chinese dragons, both in mythology and modern-day cultural celebrations. The Star Cloud lighting incorporates a kinetic surface, enabling the car to alternate between daytime running lights and full-beam headlamps as the scales open and close.

Flexible and autonomous cabin space
The layout of the electric powertrain and incorporation of Level 4 autonomous driving systems has enabled the creation of a spacious and flexible cabin unlike any other vehicle on roads. The two front seats are created out of flexible materials and can offer an upright ‘driving’ position, or a reclined ‘rest’ position, similar to the flexibility afforded to first-class airline passengers. With the activation of the Futuron’s autonomous driving features, the two front seats recline as the steering wheel retracts. The ‘zero-gravity’ seating position this creates helps to reduce fatigue on long journeys.

The Futuron’s seamless interior also reflects its autonomous driving nature, with surfaces flowing uninterrupted from the dashboard and through the door panels. The doors feature the same Star Cloud lighting and scaled Dragon Skin motif found on the outside of the car, creating a glittering interactive ambient lighting system. The ventilation system is also housed behind Dragon Skin scales, which open and close to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the cabin.

One of the most prominent features of the cabin is the ‘cockpit’ area surrounding the driver. The graphical user interface (GUI) of the cockpit flows out of the driver-side door and wraps around the steering wheel in a seamless arc. This merges the instrument cluster directly with the audio-visual display at the center of the dashboard and is linked to the display integrated within the surface of the steering wheel itself. The GUI is operated by artificial intelligence technologies, displaying useful information about the car various autonomous driving, powertrain and navigation features to create a unique user experience. The apex of the cockpit arc sees the GUI lunge forward towards the road, creating an interactive Star Cloud light display at the very front of the cabin.
