Kia K5 and Sorento win 2020 GOOD DESIGN Awards

  • Prestigious awards acknowledge design excellence of Kia brand

Kia Motors has earned two prestigious design prizes for its latest models, as the new third-generation Kia K5 sedan and fourth-generation Kia Sorento SUV won accolades in the Transportation category of the annual GOOD DESIGN Awards.

This is the latest in a string of design awards for Kia in recent years, with previous generations of both the Sorento and K5 also earning GOOD DESIGN Awards in 2015. Several other models in the Kia line-up, including the Telluride and Soul, have also received prizes from the organization previously.

Kia’s third-generation K5 is the brand’s one of the most powerful mid-size sedans to-date, offering drivers an inspired and technology-packed alternative to traditional rivals. Its exterior design is characterized by Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger nose’ grille and ‘heart beat’ daytime running lights, while its interior layout conveys a futuristic and high-tech appearance, aided by its 12-inch digital instrument cluster.

The all-new Kia Sorento redefines the successful design of previous generations of the SUV, while incorporating elegant and sophisticated new styling elements, with sharper lines, high-tech details and elongated exterior proportions. The ‘tiger-nose’ grille, displaying a wider shape which organically wraps around the integrated headlamps on each side, gives the new model a confident and mature presence. IRVINE, Calif., December 29, 2020 –Kia Motors America, the Official Sponsor of the New Year’s Eve Countdown, will ring in the arrival of 2021 with a groundbreaking effort for the all-new Sorento SUV. The campaign began in early-December with a Sorento embarking on a coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. on a mission to deliver the iconic “2021” New Year’s Eve numerals to One Times Square in time for the Ball Drop. Joining Kia on the cross-country trip were photographers from National Geographic that documented the coast-to-coast journey and captured inspirational stories at select points along the way.

On New Year’s Eve, a new creative campaign featuring the most rugged and refined Sorento to-date will air on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2021 on ABC. Created by David & Goliath, Kia’s creative agency of record, the campaign includes a 30-second spot entitled, “The World’s First Storytelling Machine.” The spot shows that the all-new 2021 Sorento is much more than an SUV, it is a powerful, highly sophisticated tool – a Storytelling Machine – to help us all discover stories worth telling, especially at a time when experiences are limited. In addition to the broadcast campaign, the Sorento will be featured on New Tradition’s spectacular digital billboards on the north façade of One Times Square, the building that launched the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop tradition in 1907. Sorento’s digital billboards will be on display through January.

The families will be shuttled to and from Times Square for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in a fleet of 2021 Kia Sorento and Telluride SUVs.

Kia’s New Year’s Eve campaign started on December 1 with an all-new Sorento SUV and “2021” Times Square Numerals in tow, embarking from Kia’s Irvine, California, headquarters on a cross-country road trip to deliver the numerals to One Times Square. Along the way, the Sorento stopped at Kia dealerships in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. At select points along the route, National Geographic documented the Sorento’s journey to help bring the stories from these locations to life through photography and video.

Throughout the road trip and on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, Kia has and will adhere to CDC recommended protocols regarding face masks and social distancing guidelines. Times Square New Year’s Eve on December 31, 2021 is a broadcast event and is not open to the public.

Four NBA Players Will Deliver Holiday Gifts to Families in Need via Kia K5 Mid-size Sedans

IRVINE, Calif., December 23, 2020 – To help spread some holiday cheer and provide welcome relief to those hit hardest by the pandemic, Kia Motors America, SiriusXM and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) will surprise families from underserved communities with holiday presents and monetary gifts, all delivered in Kia K5 midsize sedans. The deliveries, which will be made virtually by NBPA members, coincide with the start of the 2020-2021 NBA Season with Kia NBA Tip-Off 2020 beginning December 22. 

“The holiday season can be challenging under the best of circumstances, but when you add a global pandemic into the mix, the challenges can increase exponentially. Kia is excited to help bring some much-needed relief and holiday spirit to families across the country,” said Russell Wager, director, marketing operations, Kia Motors America. “The NBA and its players came through for fans in a big way this past season and provided us with the distraction we all needed to take our minds off the stress of daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic. NBA players Coby White of the Chicago Bulls; Kia 6th Man of the Year, Montrezl Harrell of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dennis Smith, Jr. of the New York Knicks; and Tyler Herro of the Miami HEAT, will virtually deliver gifts and other necessities to families impacted by COVID-19 via an all-new 2021 Kia K5 mid-size sedan. Each player selected their recipient family based on a personal connection or familiarity with the family’s needs and struggles throughout the pandemic. This is the latest extension of Kia Motors’ “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiatives which were instituted at the start of the pandemic back in March of 2020. Through “Accelerate The Good,” Kia donated $2 million to charities that assist homeless youth nationwide and manufactured and delivered more than 550,000 pieces of personal protection equipment in the form of face shields, to hospitals and medical centers nationwide.

Kia sponsors DAMWON Gaming, 2020 League of Legends world champions

Kia Motors Corporation has today announced a multi-year naming sponsorship with DAMWON Gaming, which is began next year.

DAMWON Gaming, the winner of the 2020 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship, will play under the team name of DWG Kia. The naming sponsorship will see the introduction of new team logos and uniforms, and numerous marketing campaigns between DWG and the Kia brand.

"We will contribute to the revitalization of e-sports globally and actively communicate with fans through the naming sponsorship with DAMWON Gaming," said Hyugho Kwon, Head of Korea Business Division at Kia Motors. "In particular, we are aiming to promote the young and dynamic Kia brand to e-sports fans around the world through this new partnership."

Promotions Support Kia’s U.S. Growth and Brand Enhancement Strategy

IRVINE, Calif., December 17, 2020 – Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced two executive-level promotions to support the fast-growing organization’s needs as its product portfolio, customer base and units in operation continue to expand. Both appointments are effective January 1, 2021.

Bill Peffer, who joined KMA in July 2017, has been named chief operating officer and executive vice president. Peffer will lead all customer facing functions – sales, marketing, and service – in the U.S., and will report to Sean Yoon, the president and CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors North America. Under Peffer’s leadership as vice president of sales operations, KMA is on the cusp of achieving the highest retail sales total in company history through the development of a consistent and sustainable partnership with the dealer network.

"In the most difficult of circumstances, Kia’s U.S. sales have outperformed the industry throughout 2020 under Bill’s leadership,” said Yoon. “This promotion is well deserved, and with five all-new and significantly redesigned vehicles slated for introduction in 2021 Bill will play an increasingly important role in the growth and maturation of the Kia brand.”

Russell Wager, who joined KMA in July 2019, has been promoted to the position of vice president of marketing.  In this position, Wager will lead and unify the marketing operations, customer journey, and public relations areas for KMA.  As director of marketing operations, Wager forged a first-of-its-kind partnership with the 72nd Emmy® Awards telecast and played a key role in KMA’s Accelerate the Good pandemic response. Wager will report to Bill Peffer.

Kia has now won the Best Popular CPO Warranty award for four consecutive years. Kia’s CPO warranty provides coverage for 10 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date, whichever comes first, and an additional one year/12,000 miles of Platinum Coverage beginning at time/mileage of CPO purchase.  Kia’s win of the Best Popular Brand Used Ownership Costs award for 2021 makes it a two-time winner in this category. 

For the CPO car awards, IntelliChoice evaluates 26 manufacturer-backed programs in two categories—Premium and Popular—based on overall market position and vehicle price range. Key components analyzed include extended manufacturer warranties, used car ownership costs, inspection process comprehensiveness, and special financing incentives. Overall, nine areas are assessed.  Furthermore, this year consisted of over 160 hours of research, 50 email surveys, the tracking of over 300 special financing and cash offers for CPO purchases, and the calculation of ownership costs for 6,572 vehicles.

Vincentric, a leading source of cost-of-ownership data and analysis within the automotive industry analyzed over 15,000 vehicle configurations using eight cost factors: depreciation, fees & taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost, and repairs. The costs were measured after incorporating the specific certified pre-owned warranty offered by the manufacturer while also applying mileage requirements necessary to be authorized as an OEM CPO vehicle. Each CPO vehicle was evaluated in all 50 states plus Washington DC, with the assumption that each would be driven 15,000 miles annually over five years.

The list, compiled every five years since 2000 by a team of Automotive News editors and reporters, is comprised of talented and influential women of various disciplines who make a significant impact on the automotive industry. Kurcz is being recognized for the second time.

IRVINE, Calif., December 1, 2020 – Building upon record breaking sales in October, Kia Motors America announced November sales of 47,897 units in a month that saw fewer selling days and consumers increasingly staying home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kia’s wide range of light trucks – Soul, Seltos, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride and Sedona – accounted for 65-percent of November retail sales volume. November also saw an uptick in midsize sedan sales performance, with the all-new K5 posting an 8.1-percent year-over-year increase in a segment that experienced an 11-percent decrease in sales year-over-year.

“Despite increased restrictions imposed nationwide due to the pandemic, Kia sales were brisk throughout November,” said Bill Peffer, vice president, sales operations, Kia Motors America. “And just like with Telluride, dealers are reporting that 2021 Sorento models are being sold before they are unloaded off delivery trucks. As we move into the last month of 2020, we are confident that the increased attention generated by Sorento and the entire Kia model line-up will propel Kia well into the first quarter.”

Hyundai Motor Group to Lead Charge into Electric Era with Dedicated EV Platform ‘E-GMP’

SEOUL, December 2, 2020 — Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled its new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform. Revealed online today during an ‘E-GMP Digital Discovery’ event, the platform will serve as the core technology for Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation BEV line-up.

The event was broadcasted through the Group’s official YouTube channel and Channel Hyundai, an online global content platform.

From 2021, the E-GMP will underpin a range of dedicated new BEVs, including Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 5; Kia Motors Corporation’s first dedicated BEV to be revealed in 2021; and a series of other models.

Designed exclusively for BEVs, E-GMP provides various advantages compared to the Group’s existing platforms, which have each been engineered predominantly to accommodate internal combustion engines. Benefits include increased development flexibility, powerful driving performance, increased driving range, strengthened safety features, and more interior space for occupants and luggage.

“Today our front-wheel driven Hyundai and Kia BEVs are already among the most efficient ones in their segments,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D Division for Hyundai Motor Group.   “With our rear-wheel driven based E-GMP, we are extending our technological leadership into segments where customers demand excellent driving dynamics and outstanding efficiency.”

“E-GMP is the culmination of years of research and development and brings together our most cutting-edge technologies. Our BEV line-up will evolve and be strengthened by this innovative new platform,” said Fayez Abdul Rahman, Senior Vice President of Vehicle Architecture Development Center for Hyundai Motor Group.

Maximizing development flexibility through modularization and standardization

E-GMP reduces complexity through modularization and standardization, allowing rapid and flexible development of products which can be used across most vehicle segments, such as sedans, SUVs and CUVs. Moreover, flexible development can satisfy various customer needs for vehicle performance. Among these, a high performance model will accelerate from zero to 100kph in less than 3.5 seconds and achieve a maximum speed of 260km/h.

E-GMP will be highly effective in expanding the Group’s EV leadership position as it will enable the company to enlarge its EV line-up over a relatively short period through modularization and standardization.

Designed for Driving Performance, Safety and Maximized Space

E-GMP is engineered to offer improved cornering performance and driving stability at high speed. This is due to optimal weight distribution between front and rear, a design which enables a low center of gravity thanks to its low-mounted battery pack, and the adoption of electric motors located in the space previously occupied by an engine.

The high-speed electric motor raises the driving performance of E-GMP vehicles. A five-link rear suspension system, which is typically used for mid and large sized vehicle segments, and the world’s first mass-produced integrated drive axle (IDA), which combines wheel bearings with the drive shaft to transmit power to the wheels, enhance ride comfort and handling stability.

The platform secures battery safety through a battery support structure made of ultra-high strength steel. Hot-stamped steel components surround this structure for additional rigidity. Collision energy can be absorbed efficiently thanks to energy-absorbent sections of the body and chassis, effective energy load paths, and a central section of the battery pack tightly bound to the vehicle body.

Moreover, by strengthening the structure of the load support section, located in front of the dashboard, engineers have been able to minimize collision energy to the power electric system and battery. The A-pillar’s load distribution structure also prevents deformation of the passenger cell.

E-GMP maximizes interior space through its long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs and slim cockpit module. With the battery pack mounted beneath the floor, the E-GMP creates a flat floor for the cabin. This provides more legroom for passengers, while enabling various arrangements for the front and rear seats.

The battery pack itself – mounted between the front and rear wheel axles – will be the most power-dense system that Hyundai Motor Group has ever created. This is partly thanks to its enhanced cooling performance, a result of a new separate cooling block structure which helps make the battery pack more compact. With energy density enhanced by around 10% compared to existing EV battery technology, the battery packs are lighter, can be mounted lower in the body, and liberate more cabin space.

Efficient and Powerful Electrification System

The E-GMP’s compact new power electric (PE) system consists of a powerful motor, EV transmission and inverter. These three components are integrated into a single compact module. This ensures powerful performance by raising the motor’s maximum speed by up to 70 percent compared to existing motors. The high-speed motor is smaller than other motors while providing comparable performance, and it gives efficiencies in both space and weight.

Additionally, a standardized battery system can be tuned to offer performance appropriate for a specific vehicle segment, to maximize driving range, or to meet various customer needs.

The motor is controlled by the inverter power module, which adopts silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. This motor can enhance system efficiency by around 2~3 percent, which means the vehicle can be driven for approximately 5 percent longer on the same battery energy.

E-GMP relies on the rear wheel for propulsion. Customers will be able to choose between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations; models with the latter can be equipped with an additional motor. The all-wheel drive system includes an EV transmission disconnector, which can control the connection between the additional motor and front wheels, and switch between two-wheel and all-wheel drive modes to enhance efficiency by offering the ideal level of power or performance for current driving conditions.

All vehicles developed with the E-GMP platform use a standardized single type of battery module. This module is composed of pouch-type standard cells and can be packed in different quantities as required for each vehicle.

Multi (800V and 400V) and Bi-Directional Charging System

Most existing EVs and the fast-charging infrastructure provide 50kW~150kW charging for EVs equipped with a 400V system; however, the development of 800V infrastructure, with up to 350kW charging, will gradually enable even more fast-charging.

In line with this trend, Hyundai Motor Group has invested in IONITY, Europe’s leading high-power charging network, as a strategic partner and shareholder. IONITY operates 298 high-power charging (HPC) stations – using a charging capacity of up to 350 kW – along highways in European countries. The company plans to increase this number to 400 HPC stations by 2022, including 53 currently under construction.

E-GMP offers 800V charging capability as standard and enables 400V charging, without the need for additional components or adapters. The multi-charging system is a world’s first patented technology which operates the motor and the inverter to boost 400V to 800V for stable charging compatibility.

A BEV based on E-GMP is capable of a maximum range of over 500km with a fully charged battery, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty vehicle Procedure (WLTP). Moreover, it can high-speed charge up to 80 percent in just 18 minutes and can add up to 100km of driving range in just five minutes.

Unlike previous BEVs, which only accept one-way charging, the E-GMP’s charging system is more flexible. The E-GMP’s newly developed Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) represents an upgrade from existing On-Board Chargers (OBC), which typically only allow electricity to flow in a single direction from an external power source. The ICCU enables a new vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, which can additionally discharge energy from the vehicle battery without additional components. This enables BEV based on the E-GMP to operate other electric machinery (110 / 220V) anywhere. The system can even be used to charge another EV.

The new V2L function can supply up to 3.5kW of power and operate a mid-sized air conditioner unit and a 55-inch television for up to 24 hours.

E-GMP to underpin future EV sales growth worldwide

Hyundai Motor Group has put in considerable effort to prepare for the era of electrification. Kia Motors Corporation launched its first mass-produced BEV in 2011, the Ray EV, in Korea, with the Soul EV sold in global markets from 2014. The Group completed the introduction of a mass production system for all electrified vehicles in 2015, including those with HEV, PHEV, BEV, and FCEV.

The E-GMP will underpin Hyundai Motor Group’s plans to introduce a total of 23 BEV models including 11 dedicated BEV models, and sell more than 1 million BEVs worldwide by 2025. As part of its BEV vision, Hyundai Motor Company launched its dedicated ‘IONIQ’ BEV brand in August 2020, which includes three dedicated BEV models, the IONIQ 5,6 and 7 by 2024. This currently covers various vehicle segments.

Kia is also undergoing a transformation for the era of electrification, based on its ‘Plan S’ mid-to-long term strategy. In September, Kia announced plans to increase the share of BEV sales volumes as a proportion of total sales to 20 percent by 2025. The company also recently published an early image of seven dedicated BEV models to be released sequentially by 2027.

IRVINE, Calif., December 1, 2020 – Heralding the arrival of the all-new 2021 Sorento, Kia Motors America is accelerating the countdown to the New Year with a coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. The fourth generation Sorento, Kia’s newest SUV will haul the “2021” New Year’s Eve numerals from the brand’s headquarters in Irvine, CA, to Times Square in New York City for installation at the top of One Times Square. At select points along the route, National Geographic will document the Sorento’s journey as well as bring the stories from these locations to life through photography and video.

“New Year’s Eve is typically seen as a fresh start and a new beginning, and that holds true this year more than ever. With its rugged capability, the Kia Sorento will bring a little piece of the energy and fun of New Year’s Eve in Times Square to people nationwide. This will also be a reminder that we’re all in this together and that the New Year brings new opportunities and excitement,” said Russell Wager, director, marketing operations, Kia Motors America.

The road trip will culminate in Times Square, where for three days after arriving, the “2021” numerals will be part of a larger vehicle display before being installed at the top of One Times Square for the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, with Kia as the Official Countdown Sponsor. On December 31, a new creative campaign featuring the all-new Sorento will debut during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2021, on ABC. And to recognize and thank them for their hard work and dedication, Kia will host frontline workers and their families in Times Square so they can ring in the New Year. The frontline workers will be shuttled to and from the festivities by a fleet of Sorento SUVs.

With the “2021” numbers in tow, the Sorento departed Kia’s Orange County headquarters with arrival in Times Square set for December 21. Along the way, the Sorento will stop at Kia dealerships in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Throughout the road trip and including all activities in Times Square, Kia will adhere to CDC recommended protocols regarding face masks and social distancing guidelines.

Second Year Scholarship Program Supports College Students Who Share Kia’s “Give It Everything” Spirit

IRVINE, Calif., November 23, 2020 -- Kia Motors America today welcomed the sophomore class of the brand’s Great Unknowns Scholarship, comprised of 16 first-year college students from across the U.S. The recipients were chosen based on financial need, academic performance, and the demonstrable ways they make a difference by “giving it everything” within their local school systems and communities. This marks the second year of the scholarship, which commenced in 2019 with the unveiling of Kia’s “Give It Everything” philosophy in the U.S.

This year’s recipients join the 16 students already receiving The Great Unknowns scholarship, bringing the total number of students that receive the $5,000 yearly scholarship to 32.  

“Kia is proud to help young people in need nationwide and excited to award The Great Unknowns scholarships to a new class of bright and talented students,” said Russell Wager, director, marketing operations, Kia Motors America. “The 32 students receiving the scholarship certainly gave it everything as they completed their respective academic years in the midst of this global health pandemic. With remote learning, abridged or outright cancelled schedules, these students didn’t miss a step when it came to their education and making a difference in their communities.”

This year’s scholarship recipients are enrolled at a variety of colleges and universities, including: Harvard University, Tulane University, Montana State University, Cleveland Institute of Art, Vanderbilt University, University of Florida, Waynesburg University, Cal State Northridge, SUNY New Paltz, Henderson State University, Michigan State University, University of Connecticut, New York University, University of New Mexico, Mercer University and Virginia Tech.

The sophomore class of The Great Unknowns scholarship recipients have declared majors in many of today’s most competitive disciplines, including, public health, engineering, arts and humanities, computer science, mechanical engineering, architecture and interior design, and pre-med and biochemistry.  A video introducing the students and how they “Give It Everything” can be found here and more information on The Great Unknowns Scholarship program and the application process can be found at https://www.kia.com/us/en/give-it-everything.

KIA UNVEILS TWO RUGGED X-LINE SORENTO CONCEPTS BUILT FOR THE WILD

Aggressive Custom SUVs Signal Brand’s Focus on Adventure, Capability and Trail Readiness

  • Sorento Yosemite Edition aims at exploring high-elevation locales and mountain living

IRVINE, Calif., November 20, 2020 – Since the arrival of the award-winning Telluride last year and the head-turning Seltos in early 2020, Kia Motors America (KMA) has had its sights on building a robust and reimagined SUV line-up.  As the next step in this capability-focused product strategy, the all-new 2021 Sorento is poised to bring customers a new level of trail-ready toughness not yet seen from the brand.  To celebrate this rugged personality, KMA unveiled a pair of custom-built Sorento SUVs – the Yosemite Edition and the Zion Edition – during the brand’s virtual national dealer meeting this week.  The two wilderness-themed SUVs build upon the production Sorento X-Line model, a variant that highlights off-road prowess with unique 20-inch wheels, increased ride height to 8.3-in., improved approach/departure angles, more advanced AWD with snow-mode, and a more robust roof rack than the outgoing Sorento.

Customized by LGE-CTE Motorsports of San Dimas, CA, each vehicle receives its namesake and inspiration from the outdoor environments found in America’s great national parks.  The Sorento Yosemite Edition is a dream build for high elevation adventuring and mountain living, painted in “Pine Green” in a matte finish with gloss and matte black accents.  The Sorento Zion Edition is a desert escape vehicle made for stomping dunes, painted in “Desert Sand” in a gloss finish with gloss black accents. 

Both feature custom fender flares that sit atop 20-inch wheels and 32-inch all-terrain tires. Body armor includes custom skid plates and brush guards in a satin chrome finish.  For packing gear, the Yosemite edition wears a brawny roof rack, while the Zion Edition comes equipped with a full-length cargo top.  The duo will be making special appearances around the country to capture the imagination of adventurers and enthusiasts, alike.

While most customers will not take their Sorento to the level of customization seen on the Yosemite and Zion Editions, many have shown a penchant for personalizing their Kia SUVs.  To satisfy that desire, Kia will offer an exciting range of port-installed and dealer-installed accessories.  Customers can tailor their Sorento to their lifestyle and needs with attachments such as roof rack crossbars, tow hitches for trailers, and side steps for easier load-in of toys.

The 2021 Kia Sorento will arrive in showrooms beginning in November.
